2013 cubs conventionToday the Chicago Cubs announced the full list of folks coming to the Convention, which starts on Friday. It’s a huge, full list, which is about what you’d expect.

Cubs Coaches:

Dale Sveum, David Bell, Chris Bosio, Rob Deer, Dave McKay, Jamie Quirk, James Rowson, and Lester Strode.

Cubs Broadcasters:

Pat Hughes, Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies.

Pretty much everyone you’d expect to be in attendance – the only names that jump out at me as missing are executives like Tim Wilken, Scott Harris and Jaron Madison, but they might not be the most popular fan targets anyway. Indeed, they might be in attendance, but simply didn’t make the official list. As for players, all the big names are there – excepting, perhaps, Carlos Villanueva, who is not yet officially signed.

Man, I want Cubs Alumni Kevin (19-9, 4.58 ERA) Tapani to attend one of these years.

    • http://www.obstructedview.net Myles

Alumnus, sorry. Kevin Tapani is not multiple people.

      • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

        You don’t know that.

        • http://www.obstructedview.net Myles

No one has ever seen Kevin Tapani and Santa Claus in the same room before.

          Think about it

          • DarthHater

So, Santa has some kind of grudge against Kevin Tapani. What’s your point?

      • Patrick W.

        Tapanus.

        • Carne Harris

          …aaaaaand now I’m craving empanadas.

Scott Sanderson threw out the first pitch at a Cubs game I went to a few years back. As I recall, he snapped off a breaking ball of some sort (from my seat I couldn’t tell) and dropped it right into the middle of the zone. At that point, he was probably 52 or 53, and hadn’t played in 15 years.

It was an impressive reminder that yes, major-league players are very, very good at what they do

  • Alex

Dave Lotto will be there. Awesome!

  • Internet Random

I guess I’m not the only one who still likes Todd Walker.

    • Joe

Todd Walker was there two years ago when I went and he was hilarious! Great guy! Reminds me of Taco from “The League.”

  • David

Kind of surprised that Almora isn’t going.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I actually was, too, now that you mention it.

  • Segal27

I am going to the convention of Saturday, I really hope to see BJax there as well as you Brett, if I see you, you better believe I’m going to say hi.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Good!

  • http://BleacherNation Dean

Surprised Soler’s name isn’t on that list.

    • Chad

I’m not sure how good his english is right now and they may not want to overwhelm him since they are bringing him along slowly. May be a similar thing with Almora since he’ still in A ball.

  • steve a

I wish Mark Grace would be there I’d miss work to get Gracey’s john Hancock

  • Rizzo44

Man i wish Soler and Almora were going.. BAEZ!!! Him and Rizzo are who im most excited for..

  • Anthony Martini

This is exactly why I stopped going to these. It’s the same old alumni every year. How about themeing these once in a while……1970, 72, 76 79 Cubs. I’d love to see Joe Pepitone, Carman Fanzone, Steve Ontiveros, Burt Hooton, JC Martin, Ken Rudolph, or Pete LaCockl , Andre Thornton sometime. Some of these lesser known names from the 70’s would be great and pull in some great stories about Leo Durocher, Whitey Lockman, Jim Marshall and Joey Amalfitano

    • Spriggs

Pepitone would be a big hit with the fans. Does he ever get invited to these? He usually shows up in Mesa every year for Randy Hundley’s fantasy camp. Hooton would be great too. What about Hickman, Hands, or Holtzman?

Also, if you want stories about Marshall and Amalfitano, why not just invite them too? Still alive and kicking and very active! I think Amalfitano may still work for the Giants now.

  • Andrew

Just out of curiosity – I know that Moreland is listed as a former player and his omission from the broadcasters list is probably a result of that, but is he going to be doing color on the radio again this season?

  • baseballet

The list of attendees seems to include anyone with a past affiliation with the Cubs who meets two criteria: 1) They are alive. 2) They were not able to parlay their past association with the Cubs into an auspicious future with another team.

You know, once you take away Sandberg and the Hawk, you’re not left with many players from the past thirty years who’d be that exciting to see. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Steve Trout!

What would you ask Todd Walker about his three seasons with the Cubs? I think I’d ask him how he managed to only steal one base in three seasons of play. Then I’d challenge him to a race right there on the convention floor.

Why would Cubs management have like Josh Vitters and Brett Jackson to attend? Is this a team celebration or a team hazing? If Josh Vitters and Brett Jackson put their hands on a Ouija board the spirits would spell “strikeout.” If the spirits were feeling generous they might spell out “You will be a star of your Prefecture.”

Looking at the “Baseball Staff” who are attending, I noticed that everyone except for Randy Bush was hired in 2012. Theo did a little house cleaning. Poor Todd Walker isn’t going to know anybody.

Here are the Cubs’ 2013 outfielders and their home run totals from last season:

    Campana – 0
    DeJesus – 9
    Sappelt – 2 (only 26 games)
    Schierholtz – 6
    Soriano – 32

I hope someone asks Theo about the outfield situation at the convention.

  • Toby

I think that if they show any plans for Wrigley renovation to be very similar to the ones proposed earlier:

  • Jeff

How do they handle the autographs? Is there a schedule posted for the different players?

  • Ed McClard

Was really looking forward to seeing Kyuji Fijikawa :(

  • adam

    hey baseballet
