Lukewarm Stove: Justin Upton Chatter Reaching Something of a Crescendo

justin uptonGiven his stature on the market, a trade involving Justin Upton will have implications for almost every team still in the market for a player of any kind. For that reason, I remain very interested in tracking his movements, even if the Cubs are no longer involved.

Today, Upton chatter picked up markedly, with reports suggesting not only that the Diamondbacks would like to have a resolution on their outfield situation (i.e., trading Upton or Jason Kubel) by Friday, but also that the Braves had stepped up with a serious offer.

Jon Heyman hears that the Braves’ are offering a “strong” package for Upton, and David O’Brien believes it’s a three or four-player package including pitcher Julio Teheran at the top (the other names do not include Andrelton Simmons or Christian Bethancourt). Obviously the package would depend greatly on those other players, but it sounds like something short of the deal the D-backs had put together with the Mariners.

We’ve been here before with Upton, who has been on the trade block since time immemorial, but this has the “feel” of something actually happening this time around.

In the meantime, the D-backs are discussing Kubel with the Orioles says Ken Rosenthal, presumably if they can’t get top dollar for Upton. But Ken adds that he sees Upton to the Braves as more likely than Kubel to the Orioles right now.

If the Braves are able to pick up Upton using their pitching depth, they’d rocket right to the top of the NL East conversation, alongside the Nationals. They’d also be clearly out on Michael Bourn, for whatever that’s worth. It seems increasingly likely that Bourn will have to settle for a one-year deal with a surprise team, or a not-so-thrilling multi-year deal with a team like the Rangers. Even with the Braves out, I still doubt his price falls far enough to take him into the Cubs’ range when considering the loss of their second round pick.

At this point, I’m rooting for Upton to go to the Braves not only to end the rumors, but also because the fallout could be fascinating (and could trickle down to the Cubs).

    That would be awesome to see both bros playing in Atlanta with J Hay Kid;

I agree, I think that would be the best 3 outfielders in baseball behind Hamilton, Trout and Bourjos/Trumbo

But then again I would take Lake, Soler and Almora! That also is a sick outfield as well!

Im sure this has been asked and answered before, but at what point is the loss of a draft pick no longer tied to a free agent that would otherwise cost one. Can we wait until spring training and then freely sign Bourn? If so is it possible that some team out there (such as the Cubs) already has a gentlemen’s agreement in place. If I were a free agent and I knew I could make several million more by waiting until the start of spring training or the start of the season I would just wait.

He’d have to wait until after the draft, I believe.

I thought in that situation the pick carries over to the following draft.

Yes, the Upton brothers in the outfield together would be awesome.

Can you imagine the braves offense with Justin, you could have Upton Upton Heyward left to right, Prado Pastornicky Uggla Freeman McCann that would be top offense on paper in the MLB

      pretty good, but top?

      1. BWA

Trout, Pujols, Hamilton, Trumbo. Nuff Said.

Why not move both Upton and Kubel? Eaton Parra Ross isn’t to shabby. Eaton has nothing left to prove in the minors and Parra needs to play everyday and I assume they signed Ross to start. I just don’t see how only moving 1 outfielder helps this team. Especially when its the outfielder with the most pop and your not filling your biggest holes at SS and 3rd

Dude, that is a good looking (so to speak) friggin team. I hope they do it.

I’ve always thought the vision of the Braves was to have both Uptons in their outfield. When he was mentioned in the Rumor Mill, I thought the Braves were going to be in on him.
Both Uptons are good, but what’s the Brother’s record for Ks in a season?

Cubs getting Scott Hairston per Ken Rosenthal. Two year deal

I’m curious to see how much he got and to see what the two corresponding moves the team makes to fit him and Villanueva on the 40 man. But at the numbers that were being thrown around (2 years, $8M), he could be a solid addition.

      1. AD

In today’s baseball economy 2 years at $8 million would be a relative bargain. Nice platoon between him and Schierholtz.

        1. North Side Irish

I’m a little scared what’s going to happen when they DFA Campana to make room for Hairston on the 40 man…

    2. Kyle

      Exccccellent.

We absolutely had to have another lefty-mashing outfielder, because both DeJesus and Schierholtz need platoon partners and Sappelt can’t do both at the same time.

It’s nice to make these five-foot putts in roster construction. Now all we need is a 6th infielder who can hit lefties a little and we’ve got ourselves a well-constructed roster.

Scott Hairston just saw it on twitter yesssssssssssssssss

I have been begging for Hairston since the offseason begun. Unfortunately, this is a bitter sweet signing for me. I have said Campana won’t be DFA unless we sign another OF. I still think he’s better then Shierholtz or Sappelt, but this front office brought in both of those guys, so of course they are going to choose their guys. I’m still not sure Campana is the guy to be DFA’d, as I think the FO will try to DFA someone they know won’t be claimed. There is no way in hell Campana clear waivers. If he is DFA’d, he is gone, and we will still will be lacking outfield depth.

The offer for Upton is RHP Teheran, OF/C Gattis, LHP Gilmartin and SS prospect Ahmed.

  13. savant

To the Braves according to MLB traderumors.

Prado, Delgado, Ahmed and Spruill is the deal i think Upton is now a brave
