lendy castillo cubsLast Saturday, the Chicago Cubs finally bit the bullet and designated Lendy Castillo for assignment to make room for Carlos Villanueva on the 40-man roster. Subsequently, the Cubs waived Castillo …

… and he cleared waivers as of today. Whew. So the Cubs don’t lose Castillo, their Rule 5 pick from last year, for whom they went to great lengths to keep through an ugly 2012 season. He was outrighted off the 40-man, and sent to Iowa, where he’s likely to start the year – possibly in the rotation.

You may resume your casual indifference about Castillo, but I’m glad the Cubs were able to hang onto the 23-year-old righty. He’s got a live arm, and definite upside, despite the rough 2012 season. Keep in mind, that was just his third season as a full-time pitcher, after being converted from the infield – and it was his first season above A-ball. He’s got a lot of room for development.

The Cubs’ 40-man roster still stands at 40, and that’s before Scott Hairston is officially added. In other words, another move is still on the horizon.

  • MightyBear

    Whew is right.

  • SouthernCub

Maybe they will treat him as the Cubs did Samardzija a few years ago and just leave him in Iowas rotation for a half season and then reevaluate.

  • Mr. Gonzo

Who is most likely to be sacrificed to the waiver wire gods next?

    • DarthHater

BluBlud? Here’s your chance. I’ve got my notary stamp ready. 😉

    • TonyP

      Campana or Sappelt??????????

      • calicubsfan007

I hope not Sappelt, seems to have more promise than Campana.

  • 1060Ivy

Hope to see a more polished and MLB-ready Lendy come summer.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Luke

Summer of 2014, maybe. I don’t think he’ll be ready to go by this summer. He needs time.

      • 1060Ivy

Agreed that Lendy probably won’t be MLB-ready but I expect a repeat of the post trade deadline 2012 Cubs pitching debacle in which any abled-bodied pitcher is thrown out to eat innings.

      • LarryJ

What kind of ceiling does Castillo have? In the rotation, is he a 3? 4?

        • Grant

I think he’s more of a relief arm than a starter.

        • Marc N.

Neither probably. Possibly a key reliever in the mold of an Aceves or Ramiro Mendoza.

      • Good Captain

In your opinion Luke/Brett, where should he be sent (eg., Iowa or Tennessee, etc.) assuming the Cubs have the choice?

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Seems like AA would be an appropriate level for his experience, especially if he’s going to try his hand at starting.

  • mudge

Friends, Romans, Cub fans; Lendy Castillo.

    • DarthHater

I come to bury Hendry, not to praise him.
      The evil that men do lives after them;
      The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Hendry. The noble Brett
Hath told you Hendry was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Hendry answer’d it.

      • Wilbur

        Well played …

    • Carne Harris

I come to bury Szczur, not to praise him.

      • DarthHater

I bow to the master. 😛

        • Carne Harris

We should start drafting players just based on Shakespeare plays. An infinite amount of monkeys can’t be wrong.

          • DarthHater

Careful, man. You’re inconveniencing Monsieur Afterbirth with this crap. 😉

            • Carne Harris

As chance would have it, I played Monsieur Afterbirth in the Scottish play. My finest performance, culminating in me being drafted 14th round by the Astros.

              • DarthHater

Really? I would have thought that would be more of a Billy Beane pick.

  • TonyP

  • MDitka

Good deal – also would have hated to see us lose him after all they did to keep him last year. when you read & remember about the position switch, the number of years he has pitched & where he did it at – i cant see anyone not being on board & being happy we have him back. Its not like we are overloaded with pitchers…..

  • DarthHater

Saw a tweet about Yeiper Castillo starting for Venezuela in a Caribbean WS game. Looked for news about it on Google and found a story in Spanish. Told Google to translate it and the result included the following great line: “‘I hope in these three games remaining awake’, blew his manager Luis Sojo.”

    • college_of_coaches

That’s interesting, because my translation program rendered the quote: “dark is the suede that mows like a harvest.”

      • DarthHater

Okay, it all makes sense now.

        • Wilbur

Spanish is such a beautiful language …

  • http://bleachernation.com ramy16

The Rays just DFA Reid Brignac..great utility player and chance the Cubs bite??

    • Drew7

I think you may be using the term “great” *very* loosely.

    • ssckelley

Wow, he was considered a hot prospect coming up through the Rays minor leagues. Someone will take a chance on him but I doubt it will be the Cubs.

  • http://www.survivingthalia.com Mike Taylor (no relation)

I expect Carlos Marmol will be traded before we DFA Tony Campana.

    • Mick

I expect the Cubs to let Fujikawa get his feet wet first in an 8th inning role, let the Marmol domestic abuse charges pass to rebuild his trade value by midseason, and DFA Campana in the meantime.

  • FastBall

I don’t think we will make any trades before ST. I think Theo is playing the waiting game to make sure teams get pretty tight on their rosters and then DFA Campana late so he makes it through waivers.

I don’t think the Cubs are going to trade Marmol or Soriano. Marmol will be a mid season trade and I don’t think they can trade Soriano to a destination he would be happy with. So unless the very small few franchises that he would approve a trade to come calling he will be a Cub this year. I am fine with that.

  • Roy Hobbs

Just read today’s comments. DarthLoser was at it again. Insulting people and even calling one guy a dumbass in the process.

Meanwhile Brett says nothing, as usual. I call Darth a mental midget and get censored by Brett, yet he allows Darth say anything he wants.

By now enough people are aware of Brett’s hypocrisy, so I don’t even have to comment anymore.

The best thing is just knowing I called Darth out and he didn’t even have the balls to respond to me. Darth is a coward. Most people on here know about the things I said to him, and most know what a scared little man he really is.

This sites owner allows trolling if you flatter him and tell him how great he is. What a joke.

Brett, you are a hypocrite bro, you always have been, and it kills you that I point this out.

    • DarthHater

Well, I was going to respond, but my hands are shaking too hard to type…

    • Pat

We all give a little more leeway to those capable of force choking us.

      • DarthHater

The Emperor will be pleased with your perspicuity.

    • Joe

“By now enough people are aware of Brett’s hypocrisy, so I don’t even have to comment anymore.”

      And yet you did.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

If it killed me to have you repeatedly point out (lame) false things, I wouldn’t allow you to repeatedly post them.

    • Carew

It’s obvios when DarthHater is just joking around..which is all the time. Also, Darthloser is kinda lame

      • DarthHater

    • Cedlandrum

Eww the claws came out. In this corner we have a 12 year old girl named Roy Hobbs in the other corner we have the very old, very deformed Darth Hater. Lets get ready to Rumble. Calling tonights fight, the very hypocritical Brett Taylor.

Round one: Hobbs comes out slaping like a little kid. Hater is breathing heavy.

O.K. I’m done. I’m going to make some popcorn and watch.

      • DarthHater

When nine hundred years old you are, look so good you will not. 😛

    • MichiganGoat

So you keep saying you’re done and won’t reply anymore but you keep returning. So this promise not to comment anymore will last what 2 days, 2 weeks, hopefully more.

      • DarthHater

Well, you know Roy. Always takes one shot and then disappears for fifteen years . . .

    • DarthHater

  • The Dude Abides

With all the anxiety on this board over somebody picking up one of our DFA’s maybe it puts a little perspective of what the other 29 GM’s think of the lower echelon of our 40 man roster. The chances of this guy being worthy of anyone’s 40 man roster is slim if he can’t stick with our 101 loss team. As I think has been said before don’t confuse quantity with quality. This team has more fillers than the “meat” used by Taco Bell.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

You may have missed the numerous other fringe roster players the Cubs have already lost this Winter.

    • ssckelley

A lot has to do the great lengths the Cubs went through to keep this guy on the roster last season.

  • Craig

Brett, you should add a like button for things that people post that entertain us like Facebook does. I’m especially entertained by jealous people who don’t have their own blog and like to call you a hypocrite :-)

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      • MichiganGoat

Hypocrite, why don’t you like my post?

        • DarthHater

Don’t listen him! You’re the greatest, Bert!

          • DarthHater

            Don’t listen TO him, either.

          • MichiganGoat

There you go praising him so you can say what ever you want and hurt people’s feelings – DarthLoser you are no Sith Lord

  • Marc N.

    More Cubs prospects stuff:

@jjcoop36: Just finished my Top 150 for the BA Top 100 discussion. Running it by some scouts. Sneak peek. I have Brett Jackson at No. 150 on my list.

  • northsiders6

I don’t really ever comment…only when something really gets to me. I love this site and all of the great info that comes along with it. What I don’t like is when I try to read other people’s opinions and commentary in response to Brett’s articles, I have to read through this nonsense on a daily basis. Many times I have wanted to comment to add my thoughts and opinions to the baseball conversations, but have shied away from doing so in fear of being ridiculed or made fun of by the regular commenters on this site. I believe that some comments are allowed that should not be, and that there are more like me who would love to chime in on the comments but do not do so for the same reasons that I do not comment. I am sure there will be some negative feedback in a few responses, but I just wanted to get my opinion out there. Hopefully everyone realizes that people want to come here to read and talk Cubs baseball and to be treated fairly.

    Thanks for reading…Go Cubs!

    • calicubsfan007

      Hey northsiders,
I am really sorry for whatever bullying you are feeling. I love to talk about Cubs stuff and I treat everyone equally, even when I don’t agree with them. I hope you want to comment more. You might not be able to control how this site is run, but you do control your voice. Don’t let anyone take that away from you. I hope to hear from you more. (=

      • calicubsfan007

I wish the edit button was still here.
*for whatever bullying you have received

      • Hansman1982

Oh, don’t give in Cali. He is clearly a small child that snuck past his parents bedroom or a mentally insane person.

        • calicubsfan007

Hahaha, oh hansman, you are truly awesome! (=

    • Whiteflag

Unfortunately this seems to be a problem with the internet, not just this site. Its easy to be brash when you don’t have to look the person in the eye. Personally, I have found Brett to be pretty fair in removing personal attacks while still allowing sarcastic jokes. Do some of the regulars go a little far sometimes…probably. But that’s life. I don’t think any of them mean anything to personal by it. Debates are what give this site character and most of them they are well spirited. So what I am saying is, don’t allow people to prevent you from posting insightful comments. If they don’t like it; they don’t like it. And try not to allow the sarcasm to get to you. It’s all in good fun.

      • Cooper

Hey guys, it sure seems like this interwebs trolling thing is really starting to be a problem.

Also, it seems like this steroids juicing thing might become a big deal, too.

        • Cubbie Blues

          Trolling Steroids … smh

        • TWC

    • Hansman1982

Here’s the thing, our community is very open and accepting, for the most part. Just make sure when you comment you bring something to the table more often than not.

Just getting on here and commenting nonsense over and over will get you ridiculed and mocked.

However, if the community sees your aren’t being a dumbass just to be a dumbass, we will correct mistakes or misunderstandings.

      Is unacceptable.

Tony Campana is a possibly useful 5th Outfielder on a team that doesn’t have many good choices because his wOBAs (wOBA with SB) is barely in the top 150 in the league and he would make a passable injury replacement.
      Is more acceptable.

Clearly there are no right opinions but just don’t spout the same garbage that ESPN would and you will do just fine.

I think we are a very understanding and trusting group but we have no qualms in forcing out the bad apples.

      • calicubsfan007

I bring chicken to the table.

      • Cubbie Blues

        Very well said, Handyman.

  • Danny Ballgame

So………You guys like baseball n’ stuff?

  • Whiteflag

    Nothing like entertaining yourself.

  • JoyceDaddy

Who will be the next to be DFA? With Hairston coming on board, I would expect Sappelt. I think the Cubs still value Tony Campana’s speed too much to allow him to be DFA’d, so Sappelt would be the most logical in my mind. Also, Brett I never noticed that Soler was on the 40 Man roster; what’s the reason for that, considering he has only played minimal lower level affiliations? Was that necessary when the Cubs pursued him? I remember seeing the home run highlight on BN that he hit, dude has some legit power.

    • cjdubbya

It was part of his initial contract, it sounded like other teams were willing to put him on the 40-man. Remember, the Cubs also had Gerardo Concepcion 40-man all last year, though he looked (mono aside) overmatched at Peoria this year.

  • Cheryl

This is a clean site. Women and children read it. Take this trash talking elsewhere!!!

    • cjdubbya

Honestly, you could remove the word talking from your post and be just as right. Have a feeling that the banhammer’s going to be wielded swiftly and with great force this morning.

    • Marc N.

I want to get on Mrs. Lovejoy for this, but that was annoying to even glance at.

  • MichiganGoat

Well that was disturbing, trolls acting as presidents .

    • MichiganGoat

Never mind the president trolls are gone

      • Cheryl

Thank goodness. I hate seeing stuff like that.

  • bbmoney

Oh good, glad that’s all been taken care of.
