Annually one of my favorite days of the year, if not for the actual baseball activity (most pitchers and catchers have already long been in camp), but instead for the symbolic nature of the date. To me, the day pitchers and catchers are required to report to Spring Training is the first day of the baseball season.

So, get your excited pants on, because today, pitchers and catchers REPORT!

very happy kitten

  • JP

Any surprises who is being invited to get a look-see for spring training when they report today?

  • JP

Oh also saw yesterday that Brian Wilson (the beard) is looking for a job right now coming off Tommy John surgery, sounds like a prime candidate the Jed and Co go for also who knows if we’re going to be looking for a closer shortly???

    • MichiganGoat

We are already in roster crunch and I really would only sign him if we an add a SHUT THE HELL UP clause.

      • EB

Yes, along with a QUIT ACTING LIKE A DOUCHE, YOU’RE NOT FUNNY clause and a CUT THAT HIDEOUS BEARD clause

      • JP

Ha MG I was thinking that as well, guy still can pitch when healthy though I believe I read this is his 2nd TJ surgery. He said he got lucky and Sasquatch was kind enough to give him the ligament which I thought was kind of funny… Better than the normal softball answer to that question I guess

        • waittilthisyear

yea i guess im in the minorty, being of the belief that his antics are pretty funny

          • John

I never had a problem with him either. I get tired of the same cliches.

    • cubzfan

We won’t be looking for another closer any time soon. Fujikawa has that job locked up whenever Marmol leaves, and least through 2014. If he were to fail, guys like Villanueva or Bowden would get a look before the Cubs would spend on a free agent.

  • Fastball

Na… Wilson wants big $$$and he is older than what we need. Plus I can’t stand that stupid beard. I would rather keep Marmolaide

  • AnkenyHawk

Any chance of the Cubs inviting Mark Prior to camp?

    • Big Daddy

I wondered that myself. He could be an intriguing bullben guy.

      • Big Daddy

        “bullpen” sorry

    • MichiganGoat

Why? All it would do add publicity, I guess he could do a sign and retire type thing.

      • Die hard

He could be a poster boy for how not to handle a pitcher e.g. Towel drills

  • MichiganGoat

BASEBALL IS BACK – I can now stop playing my rampage.

  • @cubsfantroy

The best day of the new year, so far. Next up, fantasy baseball draft in a month or so.

  • Colocubfan

IT’S FINALLY HERE!!! Officially baseball season for me too. I tolerate the NFL as long as the Bears are still in it, but after that it’s wait for Spring Training so we can get on with this thing.

Another year to say GO CUBBIES! (I know we’re rebuilding)

  • HoustonTransplant

    WOOT!

This is the dark days of sports…after the super bowl but before spring training…there is light at the end of the tunnel! BASEBALL IS (ALMOST) BACK! I can’t wait to see some ST games.

  • DocPeterWimsey

Yes! Time to get those players to work off the flab after 3-4 months of sitting behind desks representing insurance firms and daydreaming about life without the nagging wife and screaming kids! Oh, wait, it’s not 1965 anymore, is it?

  • True(ly) Blue

Brett, I love your cat pictures.

  • http://bleachernation arcola

Got my excited pants on Brett. Can’t wait for the games to begin.

  • willis

This is an awesome day. The beginning of another year of baseball and hope is in the air. Counting down the days until I get to see the team in Atlanta opening week.

    • Blublud

Yeah. The kids are on spring break that week so we’ll be packing the kids up and heading to Atlanta Friday morning for Friday and Saturday’s games. Heading back home on Sunday. It’ll be my daughters first Cubs game. I rarely miss an Atlanta road series.

  • sven-erik312

At last, I have been counting down the days since the World Series was over, a 4 game sweep, it was over far too fast! I’m with you Brett, lets go! It’s cold and snowing here in Sweden too, but we do hear birdsong again, PLAY BALL!

  • Diesel

Should we start singing “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” and insert baseball references instead of Christmas and winter nonsense?

  • calicubsfan007

For some reason, the title of this article makes me think of some Justice League-esque kind of call to action. (=

  • mysterious4th

Brett, I LOVE the picture for this piece. I am pretty sure it describes how I feel about it! February tends to be a boring month of sports for me. I am not a hockey fan and the NBA has turned into a circus!

  • steve

I would bring in Brian Wilson for 2 years with an incentive laden contract. He’d be a good flippable type piece, or he’d be great depth at closer once Marmol is traded. The new japanese guys slated to be the closer once Marmol’s moved, but no one can say we’re completely confident in him being good or not. I think that he will be a good cloer, but seriously Wilson would be a good insurance policy, or a good set up guy, not a bad situation in my book.

  • Die hard

If Castillo takes charge like a Johnny Bench or the rebel then team will fall in line

  • Leroy

it’s baseball season!!! We had our first practice yesterday (Sunday) and today real people who get paid much more money than I do meet today!!! So giddy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
