In the first surprise of the 2013 Chicago Cubs Bunt Tourney, President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein has taken down the far more accomplished baseball player, his GM Jed Hoyer. The matchup was in the first round of the front office play-in portion of the tournament. Already so much excitement!
Paul Sullivan captured the essence of the loss from Hoyer’s perspective:

Jesse Rogers tweeted a few Vines (short videos – it’s a new thing, you’re going to probably see it from time to time) from the matchup, one each of Theo:

So, was the outcome legit? How did Theo – a guy who hasn’t played competitively since, like, high school, take down a superlative college baseball player?
Well, Paul Sullivan suggests there was some funny business …
Theo making big comeback. Scorekeeper Dr. Kookie rigging it for his boss.

I would imagine investigations are already underway.

Can’t let the boss win.
Oh, man. Jed just missed the 100 point circle on that last one. Wonder if that’s what he called.
Theo, preaching fundamentals and leading by example.
Yes, a last place team
I give you credit for being relentless. Last years team wasn’t theos team, If you don’t see an improvement this year, and we aren’t contenders by 2014, then you can really complain.
Hoyer’s looking a bit grey. The job must be getting t him already.
Do you know who Theo will be facing in the next round?
I wonder how this would look on the Cubs players part if Theo ends up winning this entire bunt competition. I imagine not too good.
Awesome. My money was on Theo. Can’t wait to see the Vines when I get home. Keep the Bunt Tourney coverage coming.
