Quantcast

ian stewart and josh vittersIan Stewart and Josh Vitters won’t be participating in today’s intrasquad game as planned. As noted in the Bullets this morning, each is dealing with a quad injury, and Stewart will be having an MRI to determine the extent of the injury. He expects to take a few days off regardless. Vitters isn’t yet scheduled for an MRI, but he’s also going to get some rest. It’s early in Spring Training, and way too early to be concerned.

As for the intrasquad game, which starts at 1pm local time in Mesa, the lineups today feature far fewer regulars than yesterday’s game, but still have quite a few roster competitors and interesting youngsters.

Brooks Raley will start for the White team, followed by non-roster invitee Drew Carpenter, Rule 5 pick Hector Rondon, and intriguing youngster Dayan Diaz (also a NRI). Alberto Cabrera will start for the Blue team, followed by Michael Bowdon, Blake Parker (NRI) and Jensen Lewis (NRI).

The lineup for the White team:

1. Watkins, 2B
2. Szczur, CF
3. Clevenger, C
4. Chavez, RF
5. Lake, 3B
6. Maysonet, SS
7. Lillibridge, 1B
8. Soler, LF
9. Valbuena, DH

And the lineup for the Blue team:

1. B. Jackson, CF
2. McDonald, LF
3. Lopez, C
4. Sappelt, DH
5. Bogusevic, RF
6. Villanueva, 3B
7. Gonzalez, 2B
8. Nelson, 1B
9. Baez, SS

Tidbits: Johermyn Chavez is the positional equivalent of Diaz (a minor league signee who is young enough and intriguing enough to be considered a borderline prospect), so he’ll be interesting to watch. Brent Lillibridge’s versatility shows right out the gate. Christian Villanueva gets starts in both games, which is interesting given that he’s not really competing for a job at this point (of course, today’s start is largely because both Vitters and Stewart are out).

Feel free to use this post as your open thread for the game, itself.

Understand this is a game that doesn’t matter at all and only to prepare for live batting for the spring, but why are Soler and Baez so low?

  • Tim

Brett, I assume there is some kind of explanation that I’m missing as to why soler and Baez are both hitting in the bottom of the order?

    • hansman1982

Well Baez is no longer a prospect so that’s about where you expect him to play but Soler batting that low is an OUTRAGE. They should be resting him for Opening Day.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Probably just to make sure other guys get more at bats today since each of Soler and Baez played yesterday. I don’t really think it matters or indicates anything.

      • ETS

Plus, I think they have a pretty good idea of what league Soler/Baez are going to start in this year.

  • Carytid62

Sitting in the stands right now. I’m probably more interested in seeing Soler, Baez, et. al. Than any MLB level cubs anyway, so I’m glad to see the lineups are milb heavy.

    • Rcleven

Got that battery charged? Keep us updated.

      • Carytid62

Ill probably tweet a bit with some video from @caryatid62 on twitter. I don’t use that account much, but will post from there. Brett–feel free to use any of the material if its worthwhile.

  • preacherman86

Also interesting and noteworthy is junior lake, after starting and playing mostly of in winter ball he is seeing a consecutive day of action at the hot corner. It’s early, but possibly a glimpse into the heart of the f.o. On him goin forward? If he really is the kind of prospect who has great upside and a good bat, could it be a second coming of Aramis Ramirez? That’s a guy with a wicked stick and poor focus/energy at times in the field!

    • gocatsgo2003

… or two third basemen are injured.

      • Jp3

hmmm, is Vitters still a 3rd base prospect? have the coaches said he’s improved his play at 3rd in the offseason?

    • Jp3

I like the ARam comparison, he may never put it all together but i like the upside comparison.

    • MichCubFan

Lake has a long way to go, still. As physically gifted as he is, he is still has to put those skills to use before he can even be seen as a future major league starter.

He might just be starting this game because Stewart and Vitters are out. Nothing to read into.

  • http://Bleachernation.com someday…2015?

Cabrera has some nasty stuff. Should be a good test for Soler.

  • Rcleven

    Battle of the day? Sappelt/Lillybridge.
Not sexy but there is a 25th man roster spot to claim.

    • hansman1982

It won’t come down to those two.

  • North Side Irish

Not really about this game, but Sean Manaea had a strong outing today…6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 11 K’s. Definitely interested to see if he can continue his success from the Cape Cod league this season.

    • Kubphan82

I appreciate the post… I’m a fan of Manaea and watch him (not as closely as knowing he pitched today) as he could be our first pick…

  • DarthHater

I would have hoped that a guy who is supposed to be a professional athlete and to whom the Cubs are paying $2 million to rehab from an injury could at least come to camp in good enough shape to get through the first week without straining a quad.

  • D-Rock

    Brett,
Is there any way to listen to or track this game?
    Thanks.

Unfortunately not – just the Internets or actually being there.

Brett Jackson’s new swing is clearly working – he led off today’s intrasquad game with a double.

Steels third and driven in by McDonald. McDonald picked off first. 1/0 Blue.

  • On the Farm

Call it whatever you want, but Ian Stewart is consistent. He is picking up this season where he left off last season.

    • Jp3

yeah you got that right. how’s the saying go about him fooling us twice?? this $2 mill is a shame on us

      • Bigg J

  • Rcleven

    Jackson singles. 2 for 2.

    • Jp3

good to hear no k’s yet for BJax. I really hope he can cut that K rate down a bit because he could be a nice everyday player other than striking out more than Rob Deer did….Oh wait please tell me he teaches better than he hit…

      • Rcleven

4 walks and no K’s. Still early though.

  • Rcleven

Javier Baez thrills the crowd at Cubs intrasquad with nice play to his right on sharp grounder in the hole.

  • Rcleven

Jackson with another single. 3 for 3.

    • http://thecubcontrarian.blogspot.com DB Kyle

      I want to believe!

  • Bilbo161

Maybe Brett Jackson will force the Cubs to bring him up sooner rather than later. If we can at least have a few guys beating down the door to make the roster we wouldn’t be at such a loss as to what to do when we have injuries.

  • Rcleven

    Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs

Lots of walks in this game…Soler just flew out..2-1 bot 4…blue team leading
