cactusRemember all that stuff I said yesterday about Spring games not meaning anything? Totally wrong. Now that the Cubs are 3-1, the games totally mean something.

The Cubs took down the Rockies today at HoHoKam Park, which will have no impact on where the teams pick in the 2013 or 2014 drafts.

  • Dave Sappelt answered any outfield challenge he was feeling in the last couple days with a two-hit day, including a homer. He played center field.
  • Speaking of those outfield challengers, Johermyn Chavez and Darnell McDonald went hitless in three combined at bats.
  • Javier Baez got a hit and stole a base off of the bench. Christian Villanueva had a homer. Neither is a threat to make the roster, but it’s still neat.
  • The pitching was quality all around today. Edwin Jackson and Chris Rusin each threw two scoreless innings, Zach Putnam threw a scoreless frame, and each of Drew Carpenter and Nick Struck gave up just one earned run in two innings of work.
  • Combined, the pitchers allowed just eight hits and one walk. That one walk part is really swell. If that’s four or five walks, those eight hits look a lot more troubling.
  • MichCubFan

What do you think is Christian Villanueva’s ceiling?

    • Edwin

Probably a 2-3 WAR player? Maybe a Kevin Kouzmanoff? From the reports I’ve read, it sounds like he plays great defense, but a little light on the hitting side.

      • Noah

Yeah, I’ve read good defender, should be solid but not great OBP (.340-.350 type), but more a 10-15 homer type than the power bat you’d prefer at the hot corner.

  • Rcleven

What vodo magic does this Chris Bosio bring?
    1 Walk.

    • Rcleven

Biggest surprise 4 games in 0 HR allowed.

      • Whiteflag

Voodoo is the key to success. Just ask the Cardinals.

.750 clip. The bar has been set, and this will absolutely continue. This is the most amazing Spring Training start in the history of Spring Training. I just wonder what Shelby Menge thinks about how the 2013 Chicago Cubs will fare in 2013?

  • wisdan

Had them at 75-80 wins but with this pitching 145-150 wins

  • cubzforlife

Seeing that the Cubs will play at least 200 games this year I predict 250 wins.

  • hardtop

you guys aren’t even funny. this is how the blind optimism starts… with sarcasm; and then you start to believe you’re own sarcasm, next thing you know you’re disappointed at the 67 wins they accumulate in 2013 and you’re offering lame rationalizations, like Ian Stewart’s injury.

    slippery slope you guys 😉

    • Timothy Scarbrough

      The classic slippery slope fallacy.

    • cjdubbya

That’s why I’ve been throwing #SillyST and #STIrrational on this sort of crap on Twitter, and laughing audibly at the silly comments on Facebook. I’m trying to make it as over-the-top as possible to keep people far away from that edge. I mean, a .750 winning percentage has been done literally once in the history of baseball, and the 2013 Cubs will be nowhere near as dominant as the 1906 Cubs.

“.Baez .. and stole a base off of the bench”

Absolutely nothing wrong with this phrase other than the mental image I came up with of Baez taking his lead out of the dugout and racing across the infield to slid safely into second just below the tag of the shocked Rockie second baseman.

Also reminded me of a story an old friend of mine had who was a minor league ump who was doing a spring training game when the runner missed home on a close play. In one of those weird moments when reaction overtakes rational thought “the play” progressed into a rundown between home and the dugout. My buddy’s umpire mate at 3B got into the spirit of the play by running over and calling out, “I have the dugout …”

Just weird baseball thoughts in the middle of a snow storm …

    • Rich H

I read that and think of the manager that come running out of the dugout and stole a base as he was arguing a call.

  • Die hard

Don’t forget who predicted Struck would stick though would use him as sweetener of above proposal to get top pitcher

  • Jim

“Neat” and “Swell”? Did we slip back into the 1950s and nobody told me?

    • Brett

    • DarthHater

Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?

      • Die hard

Most asked that question back then were

        • DarthHater

Okay, I apologize in advance to Brett and everyone else for what I am about to say, but it just has to be said.

“Most asked that question back then were”

If you believe that, then you, sir, are an utterly ignorant jackass.

          • DocPeterWimsey

heh, well, we certainly know what everybody asking the question was!

          • Matt3

            I disagree

          • Die hard

First you need to apologize for bringing it up at all- trying to be cute has consequences…Second you need to review your history books as most had been many years before the hearings as members of the Party or affiliates- for a brief time but had long before abandoned and were patriots. that’s how McCarthy got his information which was from others in the same groups Third at that time fear of nuclear war was as real as terror attacks since 9/11 And that’s the type of fear our Govt used to invade Iraq after 9/11- if they weren’t members at all there wouldn’t be that sliver of truth that can be easily exploited by people like McCarthy then and Cheney later

            • college_of_coaches

All I have to say is, Die hard, have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?

              • DarthHater

Now I understand all that nonsense about having Castro play third base. He was referring to Fidel! 😛

          • Pat

I Have to agree with diehard on this one.

            • Danny Ballgame

So, you dudes like baseball er what?

              • Diesel

I don’t think like is a strong enough descriptor for the people who frequent this site.

Sensative ladies!!! I love the blog because the news is legitimate!! I laugh however when I see the “once in a blue” drama such as “DarthHater” calling ppl “jackasses”… In all reality it keeps the boards “non-STALE”… Good fun ladies…good Fun!!! and… BTW… Brett excellent blog. I am a true competitive type and find it to hurt my bones when I must praise others…but as they say…”Give credit…where credit is due”…. I tip my cap sir….this blog is by far…..THE TRUTH!!!
