addison and clarkThanks to genetics that hew more closely to Tony Campana than to Anthony Rizzo, my son is probably always going to have to settle for scrappy. In the wee hours of this morning, The Wife and I (and The Little Girl) welcomed The Little Boy to our family. We named him Clark. He is already awesome at everything. Thanks to all of you for the kind words and well-wishes. Unbelievable true fact: BN’er Brent sent me one of those kind words/well-wishes emails late yesterday, noting that his wife was a labor and delivery nurse at an area hospital in Columbus. And, out of all the hospitals and all the nurses, who helped us deliver Clark? Brent’s wife. Small, lovely world.

  • Soon after he exited yesterday’s game with an apparent hamstring injury and was dutifully evaluated by the training staff, Starlin Castro seemed pretty confident that he’d avoided any kind of serious injury. Castro was already jogging around, and described the injury as “tightness” rather than any kind of strain. He’s day-to-day, and I still think we won’t see him back in game action for a little while. But it’ll be because playing him right now serves no significant purpose.
  • Matt Garza also seems to have avoided a serious injury – in his case, his left lat – and could throw from 90 feet later today. If that goes well, he’ll be right back on schedule to be available for the first week of the season.
  • Dale Sveum responded to Theo Epstein’s comments about the Cubs selling off once again if they’re not in contention come July, and said what you’d expect him to say – it’s part of the business, you hope you’re not in that situation, etc. He also damned the hell out of his offense with faint praise: “If guys live up to their capabilities, it’s a pretty functional offense.” Yes. *IF* guys live up to their capabilities, the offense can be a whopping “functional.” He’s not wrong, either, which is the unfortunate part.
  • The Cubs lost to the Dodgers yesterday, but the game featured at least on Cubs highlight: top prospect Javier Baez, noted for his crazy bat speed, hit a ball so hard at shortstop Dee Gordon that he had to scramble just to avoid being drilled by the liner. Now that’s how you get a base hit.
  • The plan for Brett Jackson remains AAA Iowa in April, despite the initial appearances of his swing changes being legit. Hopefully he’ll crush it in Iowa for a few months, and then earn a mid-season promotion.
  • A Kerry Wood Q&A with an interesting anecdote on just how close Wood came to retiring in 2006.
  • Make sure you listen to this week’s episode of the BN Podcast – I didn’t get a chance to pimp it as much yesterday as I usually do. I think it’s a good one.

    great news Brett! congrats.

  • cubchymyst

Congrats, and thanks for the bullets today. I figured I’d have to go elsewhere for Cubs news today.

  • Jim L.

Congrats Brett. Hopefully there is not a Wagon Queen Family Truckster in young Clark’s future.

  • OlderStyle

Best to you and your family, Brett.

“Functional”? “Functional”? Dang, we might as well start the firesale now. We’re deluding ourselves to think they have snowball’s chance this year. Looking to 2014…

  • Rcleven

    Happy birthday Clark.

  • muley

Congrats to you and your wife with addition of your son very cool.
Speaking of Jackson’s new swing… I first saw him 2 yrs ago in D.M. and he was hammering the predictaable first pitch fastball with plus power.. after which He went to ST last yr with huge hopes and started presssing.. He develope a habbit of pulling his head off the pitch on nearly every swing this stayed with him all year.. Mean while teams stopped throwing him first pitch fastballs and his pitch recongnition just wasn’t there.. In short he was lost at the plate.. Hopefully Deer gets him to keeep his head on the ball so he has time to recognize what pitch he is attacking..

    Wonderful news! Clark Taylor.

ESPN Insider has an article projecting the top 30 players in MLB for 2018. Castro is #8 and Rizzo is #15. Tony Campana is #2 between Trout and Harper.

    • hansman1982

Pfft, what does Trout do that is that much better than Tony?

      Speed? NOPE
      SB? NOPE
      Being really fast? NOPE
      Not being slow? NOPE
Getting taped to a cheetah’s back? NOPE

Boom, there’s your 5 tools, and Campana is #1 in all of them.

They also rank the organizations’ futures, as they do every year. The Cubs come in 6th based on a 30 (best) – 1 (worst) point ranking of each team in 5 categories: current MLB roster, minors, finances, management, and mobility of contracts. In the last 4, the Cubs lead MLB with 99 of 120 possible points! Unfortunately for the here-and-now, the current roster ranks 25th…..

Oh, and the Cards rank #1. They also do well in the “future 4” categories, and score 6th for the MLB roster.

  • Kansas Cubs Fan

Congrats, Brett! Give him a high 5 for me.

  • dan

Let me guess your daughters name is Addison ?

  • cas-castro

congrats to the new addition. When my wife and I learned that we were expecting twins, we joked that we were going to name them Clark and Addison. Addison was going to be one of the girl names. It turned out that we are having two more boys instead. Nothing wrong with that..two more cub fans in the family either way…

  • justinjabs

Congratulations. I had a friend years ago who named their son Clark Addison. I have a friend from the Cubs board who lives in AZ who named his daughter Addison.

Glad mom and baby are fine, that is the important thing.

    Best regards,

    • lukers63

My wife and I named our daughter Addison. Only name we agreed on, boy or girl.

  • Barbara Berg

Congratulations! I have a cat named Cubbie; my daughter has Wrigley and Ivy. They are moving here to Arizona next week; the upside being every Cub home spring training game and not having to go to Dodger Stadium (worst stadium traffic and comparable fans) to see the Cubs. If they have to adopt, she and her husband want a speedster from the Dominican. (May I see the birth father run the bases)?

  • Gcheezpuff

Congrats!! My wife and I are also expecting our 2nd with a DD in August. Hopefully you’ll post some trials and tribulation stories of raising two children that I can learn from.

  • Dougy D

Congratulations on the birth of your son.

  • LEO R.

    Congrats Brett and family!
