The Cubs play a couple split-squad games today – against the Royals in Mesa, and against the Rangers in Las Vegas – and both are televised.

You can catch the Royals game on WGN, and it’s the debut of the new broadcast team, Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies. The Rangers game, one of two in Vegas this weekend, is on MLB Network. So get your channel-flipping finger ready for a busy day.

Jeff Samardzija takes the ball in Vegas, and Hisanori Takahashi (still fighting for a bullpen spot, probably against the red hot Chris Rusin) starts in Mesa.

That Mesa game will feature both Javier Baez and Jorge Soler, so you can all finally watch them today. Another walk-off, perhaps? Maybe Soler this time?

Lineup versus the Rangers:

1. Luis Valbuena, SS

2. Darwin Barney, 2B

3. Starlin Castro, DH

4. Nate Schierholtz, RF

5. Scott Hairston, CF

6. Dioner Navarro, C

7. Brian Bogusevic, LF

8. Steve Clevenger, 1B

9. Edwin Maysonet, 3B

Lineup versus Royals:

1. David DeJesus, CF

2. Brent Lillibridge, 3B

3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B

4. Alfonso Soriano, LF

5. Josh Vitters, DH

6. Javier Baez, SS

7. Jorge Soler, RF

8. Rafael Lopez, C

9. Alberto Gonzalez, 2B

    Baez gone again. Crushed. Geeezus.

    • cubchymyst

I think Baez will be in AA quickly.

      • JOE

I sure hope so. If he hits a four homers every five plate appearances he should be in Chicago any day now lol

  • MJ

Maybe it’s okay to be a free swinger if you keep launching missiles all over the place.

  • JOE

I officially have a man crush on Mr. Baez

  • KidCubbie

    That one left the yard.

  • Cerambam

I wonder where they would start Baez if he hit a home run in every PA for the rest of the spring

It would be a tossup between Barney at 2B and Valbuena at 3B. Baez would replace one of them. My guess would be Valbuena at 3B because .227 BA with some power is a loses to Gold Glove defense at 2B.

Samardzija looked good. Worked out of a bit of a jam in the 4th. Harriston’s homer was a rope to left.

  • Ed

So what do you guys think of Jim Deshaies so far?

    • http://Bleachernation.com someday…2015?

He works well with Len. I have no complaints for his first Cubs broadcast.

It’s still weird for me… I’m always waiting for Bob and his bassy voice to “correct” Len.

Not a bad 0-4 for Soler. Worked a few counts, flew out to deep right on a ball that looked like he didn’t even square up, and a screaming line out to right. His defense looks pretty smooth as well.

Ranger game is in the book.

    Hey Brett/Luke,

Who is Carlos Penalver? I dont remember seeing him on the prospect radar? They said he’s 18 from Venezuela. Is he one of the kids we got for Campana? He looks pretty polished. I don’t remember seeing him anywhere.

      • MightyBear

Thanks. I knew I could have done that. I was looking for some expert analysis. This kid looks like he’s brand spanking new but I guess he played in the Dominican Rookie league and the AZL rookie league. I just don’t remember seeing him.

    • Ed

No, we got two pitchers for Tony.

      • MightyBear

        You’re right. I forgot.

    • Cedlandrum

No one answered you about Penalver, but he is a player. From what I have read, he is athletic and can run a bit. He has a good eye. He came over for instructs in 2011 and I remember that AZ Phil thought he looked like a player along with Canelario.

He played in AZ this last year but that was more of the product of Marco Hernandez not being able to handle Peoria and needing to be shifted down otherwise I think Penalver would have been in Boise. He has some odds stacked against him in that he has no power and he is playing at probably the Cubs strongest position prospect wise. (Alacantra, Baez, Hernandez) That said I wouldn’t count him out because he could probably play 2nd or maybe even centerfield.

This year he probably only goes to Boise because of the traffic jam. Even with a switch to second there isn’t a lot of room to move too quickly. He is young, lots of time to get to the bigs and lots of time to hone his craft.
