peoria sports complexIt’s a split squad day! And you didn’t even know, thanks to the bizarre night game action. Tonight the Cubs head to Peoria to take on the Mariners, and Javier Baez gets another post-Spring-cut start.

Jeff Samardzija takes the ball in his penultimate tune-up for the regular season.

If you’ve got MLB.tv you can catch tonight’s game live. If you don’t, you can catch a replay at midnight on MLB Network. If neither of those routes is going to work for you, the good news is that this one is on WGN Radio, too.

The lineup:

1. David DeJesus, CF

2. Luis Valbuena, 3B

3. Nate Schierholtz, RF

4. Alfonso Soriano, LF

5. Dioner Navarro, C

6. Javier Baez, SS

7. Brad Nelson, 1B

8. Alberto Gonzalez, 2B

9. Jeff Samardzija, P

Cool! Workin 3rd shift. Will be nice getting home and watching Javier Baez and the Cubs!

  • Kubphan82

I’m excited for Javier and to see Shark! I’m also interested in seeing Shierholtz in the 3, a place (along with the 2), I think he should hit… Tho I’d bet he projects 5 in most lineups.

And when can we start being American and shortening Javier to Javy? Maybe it’s the fever talking but saying Javy Baez is even better than Javy Lopez, maybe it’s lazier and maybe it’s because he’s a Cub… BUT, I vote for Javy…

For those in the Pacific Northwest this game is on Root NW. At least it is on Dish Network in Boise ID.

  • NCMoss

    Yeah! Let’s go Brad Nelson!

  • DaveY

Baez just made a nice glove flip to start a double play. It wasn’t your typical flip and I haven’t seen anyone do it like that before. He charged in to his left and caught the bouncer about shoulder height and then flipped it backhanded and over handed out of the glove and not softly. Overall, a very quick move.

  • DaveY

Baez error, though they called it a hit…. a hard hit ball that he knocked down, picked up and threw wildly.

  • NCMoss

Baez just does not know how to let a pitch by without swinging yet.

His spring OBP just dipped below .300. #ready

But ST stats don’t matter- remember? Oh, yeah… they only matter when it’s convenient for matching your opinion on a player.

        • http://thecubcontrarian.blogspot.com Kyle

They essentially never matter (there might be a small exception involving pitchers, but the studies I’ve seen are inconclusive and it wouldn’t apply to Baez anyway).

But I’m a nice, reasonable guy, and sometimes I like to discuss things with people while stipulating points they make that I know are incorrect, so we can move on to other, incorrect things.

“Javier Baez is ready for the big leagues, look at his spring” is an argument that has been advanced by some Cubs fans and even a local beat writer today.

There are two reasons why that argument is incorrect. First, because spring training stats don’t matter. But I’m willing to stipulate that they do for the purpose of this specific discussion, because even then they show that he’s still got approach problems.

There’s no need to have every argument in every discussion. I’m capable of temporarily putting aside irrelevant tangential truths in order to facilitate more on-topic discussion.

To paraphrase: Kyle’s humility is exceeded only by his modesty. :-P

            • http://thecubcontrarian.blogspot.com Kyle

I like to think of it as “I’m right. And even if you’re right, it’s irrelevant because I’m still right.”

I dunno what happened to the DB. I hadn’t noticed it was gone. Oh well, Other Kyle hasn’t been around much lately.

              • DarthHater

And it’s not like your douchebaggery isn’t immediately recognizable anyway… ;-)

          • DarthHater

And hey! What happened to your DB?

            • Bill

Kyle is the Dr. House of BN. I only hope that the dropping of the “db” doesn’t result in him “going soft” on Theo for any bad moves made by the FO .

              • DarthHater

No, you know what they say: “You can take the bag out of the douche, but you can’t take the douche out of the bag.” Or is it the other way around? :-D

                • farmerjon

I believe, however, you CAN squeeze the douche out of the bag. I often wonder if Kyle is my college roommate, regardless, I use his voice when I read Kyle’s posts ;-)

                • Die hard

Surprised you don’t have a picture for that… Maybe I spoke too soon

  • DaveY

Baez looks like he has a stronger arm than Castro.

    • TheDynastyStartsIn2016

Really? I haven’t seen that yet. Baez does have a very quick release though.

I like Dr. House. I like Kyle. I enjoy his posts and his analytical skills. Like House while he may make mistakes he’s always working towards the correct conclusion and cure. And that, as we are all human, as they say ” ain’t to damn bad.”.

    Best,

    • Bill

I agree Mike F, which is why I used the analogy. I enjoy reading Kyle’s posts, they are among the most informative on this site.
