first cut is the deepestA flurry of news coming out …

Today the Chicago Cubs optioned righty bullpenner Rafael Dolis to Iowa, which I’ve long been expecting. While he was one of four remaining bullpen competitors – together with non-roster invitees Zach Putnam, Cory Wade, and Hisanori Takahashi – he wasn’t blowing anyone away, and he could be freely optioned to Iowa without risking losing him.

The other three will continue to compete for that last spot, and the Cubs will continue to monitor the waiver wire. Dolis will continue to hone his craft at Iowa. For him, he’s got the stuff to be successful – the movement on his sinker, at the speed he throws it, is wonderful – but he still needs to work on his command. He too often looks like he has absolutely no idea where the ball is going.

I don’t know what the big deal is. Takahashi is getting the last spot because he is a theo signee.

    • Brett

Literally all three of Putnam, Wade and Takahashi were brought in by Theo/Jed.

  • Cubbie Tim

Did anyone see Dolis’ pick off moves yesterday? Phenomial.

    • Brett

He can throw a dart over there to first, at the precisely right spot. If only he could do that on the black at home plate.

      • DarthHater

Maybe if he stood on the mound facing third base and pretended that the batter was a runner on first? 😀

        • Jp3

          Awesome DH:) made me laugh

  • mditka

i second that JP3 that was hilarious DH

A few minutes ago Phillies released Bentacourt— he still has something left

    • DocPeterWimsey

How can someone who never had anything have anything left? Betancourt is and has been a lousy hitter, a horrific fielder and not even a good base-runner: why anybody kept him was one of baseballs bigger mysteries.

      • Die hard

But he’s better than we got

        • DocPeterWimsey

At what, playing video games? He cannot hit or even field anywhere near as well as anybody on the Cubs roster. (You can take out “Cubs” and put in any of the other 29 teams.)

          • AB

If only the Cubs had the wisdom and experience of an MLB veteran in the front office like Dick Tidrow to tell them to go after one of the worst players getting regular playing time in the big leagues the last several years.

            • DocPeterWimsey

Yeah, you have to wonder if Betancourt had blackmail material on somebody or multiple somebodies: 2007 was the last time he didn’t post negative WAR in both hitting and fielding!

              • fromthemitten

                he’s got grit tho
