gods-wrathYou gotta be freaking kidding me.

After deciding to play all of his regulars in a stupid, meaningless, fake game against the Houston Astros – who started no regulars – Dale Sveum is now going to be without his Gold Glove-winning second baseman for at least Opening Day, and possibly longer.

While trying to catch a foul ball against the wall in Houston, Darwin Barney gashed his knee open, and required five stitches. Brent Lillibridge will start in his place on Monday, and the Cubs will make a disabled list decision within the next couple of days.

This actually happened.

  • cedlandrum

    You are lightning fast.

    • Die hard

And Brewers picked up Bentacourt who would have filled in and been decent backup at all infield incl 1B

      • Patrick W.

I’ve been trying to find a silver lining and while I haven’t found one yet at least I can find satisfaction in the fact the Brewers signed Yunieski Betancourt, the very worst player in MLB.

  • Matt

He cut his knee… he didn’t tear his ACL. Calm down.

    • Sam

It’s worth getting upset about…it’s like the 4th preseason game for the NFL

    • cedlandrum

      Who’s not calm?

      • Josh Ed.

        Loud noises!

  • Mike

Injuries can always happen, regardless of game type….spring training/exhibition/regular season. This could of happened on Opening Day. It’s a few stitches, not a torn ACL.

    • @murdiddlyurdler

      could’ve. didn’t.

      • Mike

        You’re very observant.

  • cedlandrum

If Cubs DL Barney who do they bring up? Watkins?

    • DarthHater

      Baez πŸ˜‰

      • cedlandrum

That would be such a horrible and totally cool decision.

        • DarthHater

I’m surprised Blublud isn’t already here campaigning for it. πŸ˜‰

    • Matt

Watkins hasn’t had one AB in AAA… he’s not ready.

      • cedlandrum

If it isn’t Watkins or Vitters it has to be Lake or you have to drop someone off the 40 man. None are ready and only Watkins is a 2nd baseman by trade. He can play the bench and PH until Barney is ready.

        • Tim

Put lake at third and move valbuena to second?

        • arta

isn’t Lake hurt? Clevenger was drafted as a 2B.

        • Jason

Lake is hurt. Do some research first before telling us what you think.

          • Cedlandrum

Yeah I know, I just forgot. God forbid someone make a mistake on amessage board. Not that I need to defend myself to you but I think my record on this site has been pretty decent. Carry on.

  • Spencer

This is seriously one of the dumbest things ever. There’s no reason for those guys to have been in the game today. Zero. Whomever made that decision is an idiot. Nothing like making an uphill climb even steeper. And to those people saying “it’s just a few stitches…” welp. Garza, Baker, Stewart, et al. were all day-to-day. So who cares that it’s just a few stitches? It shouldn’t have had the opportunity to happen in the first place.

  • randy

Agreed. Stupid to even been have them on the field. We are off and running for a long season.

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

(1.) Injuries don’t happen if you’re on the bench. You tend to be on the bench in meaningless games just before the season starts. Ask the Astros.

(2.) That the injury is “minor” (in the medical opinions of those in the comments) is really beside the point. If Barney has to be DL’d because of this, that’s two weeks of missed games.

(3.) That the injury is “minor” (in the medical opinions of those in the comments) says nothing about any lingering effects. Having not seen the cut or its location, I’m not in a position to speculate.

(4.) Being annoyed about the injury seems a pretty fair reaction given how it happened, when it happened, and how it always seems to happen.

(5.) I’m perfectly calm. I’m annoyed. The two are not mutually exclusive.

    • DarthHater

“Injuries don’t happen if you’re on the bench.”

      Oh, really? πŸ˜‰

      • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I was going to caveat it for humor, but I wasn’t feeling very humorous.

        • DarthHater

It should also have the caveat that Big Z is not on your team… πŸ˜›

        • Die hard

Brett stop apologizing… You are right to criticize…. As I said above keep it coming and you will surprise yourself as how popular this site will become as long as your criticism is based on the truth…. Think Mike Royko

          • DarthHater

It’s true, Brett. Nobody ever went broke by pandering to the nattering nabobs of negativity.

    • DocPeterWimsey

“(5.) I’m perfectly calm. I’m annoyed. The two are not mutually exclusive.”

Only a parent can say (or write) that with a straight face!

    • OCCubFan

“Having not seen the cut or its location, I’m not in a position to speculate.”

Brett, you are a wise man.

    • Die hard

Proud of you young man… See how good you feel when you lay off the koolaid …. Keep it coming and this website will have a million hits a day…. Just tell it like it is… We can handle it

      • Patrick W.

Are you implying Brett doesn’t already tell it like it is? At least as he sees it. His facts are virtually always spot on and his opinion is his opinion, which is why we all come here.

      • Die hard

P.S. Brett…. Don’t take offense at me calling you a young man as you today have shown the gumption that have kept us old farts alive …. Kudos to you as you have earned my respect for calling out Sveum and his bosses

    • Kyle

      You know what annoys me?

That we spent absolutely the bare minimum on our infield bench this year, and it’s about to show with two starters hurt. It really wouldn’t have killed us to toss a million or two at that portion of the roster instead of having Sveum check his buddy list for any replacement-level (hopefully) guy who was looking for a job.

      • DarthHater

Wouldn’t it be easier to ask what doesn’t annoy you? πŸ˜‰

        • Kyle

          Edwin Jackson

        • Kyle

Might as well make the official list, so I don’t get accused of hindsight later.

The 2013 Cubs annoy me with:

          1) Their infield bench
          2) Navarro
          3) Lillibridge (he’s part of the infield bench, but he annoys me that much)
          4) Handing Marmol the closer’s job when he’s clearly not one of our top 2 relievers
          5) Bringing back Ian Stewart

That’s about it. Was intrigued by what they did with the outfield, loved how they handled the rotation, no roster-composition complaints this spring.

          • college_of_coaches

I know I’m going to regret this, but what is it about Navarro that annoys you?

            • Kyle

He’s not very good and costs too much for being it. Clevenger could easily be not very good for less. Then maybe we’d have had money left over for a real infield bench.

              • Jp3

                Like Chone Figgins???πŸ˜€πŸ”«

                • Kyle

                  • Jp3

I was def kidding, I just figured we haven’t thrown enough money away this offseason

          • Jp3

#5 for me, not even close for me. As the old timers say, “if I had money like that, I’d burn mine”

  • DarthHater

Calm down, guys. This just means we’ll get a quicker start on tanking the season and getting another high draft pick.

  • Leroy

    heck yeah to #5 Brett

  • cedlandrum

Hey here’s something to chew on. Josh Vitters is 2 days older then Logan Watkins. Strange in that Vitters feels like a failure and Watkins a guy who is a potential player. Perception.

    • BABIP (MichCubFan)

To me it is more the lack of improvement on defense and with his hitting approach, not his age.

      • Kyle

His hitting approach has undoubtedly improved. The walk rate is much better than it was in his younger days.

He’s been promoted pretty hard and has been young for his level every step of the way.

I don’t quite get all the Watkins love. Doesn’t look like much to me. Sure, sometimes these generic middle infielders turn into a Ryan Theriot or a Darwin Barney, but mostly they don’t, and that’s about his ceiling.

  • Njriv

I agree it is stupid that he was even playing, but I don’t think it’s really anything to get too upset about. Sometimes we over hype the meaning opening day. I get that it’s exciting , the season is finally starting and we want to see our 25 in top shape and healthy, but in reality it is just the beginning to a very long 162 game season.

  • hansman1982

O Lord! Ooh, you are so big! So absolutely huge. Gosh, we’re all really impressed down here, I can tell you.

    • hansman1982

      Now that I feel better.

      • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

        Venting is underrated.

        • hansman1982

          Thank you for calming me…

  • Todd McCombs

so much being made out of such a little matter – 162 games

    • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

Thats just it. We are 2 days before the start of 162 and we probably just lost our Gold Glove 2nd basemen for 2 weeks! If he got 5 stitches, he isn’t sliding until it is fully healed. With it being at the start of the season, he will not play for at best a week, and then probably 2 with the DL. It is stupid this even happened. That is what the issue is.

    • Spencer

Newsflash: It’s okay to be upset or irritated when injuries happen, especially when they are easily avoidable, and especially with the way the injuries have already hurt us this off-season and have turned from minor ones into ones that may last longer than initially expected.

      • http://401klogic.net Westbound Willie

        Who is “us”?

        • Spencer

          The Milwaukee Bucks.

  • Jp3

Now the Astros feel like idiots for not thinking of this 1st!;). We just wanted to show them 2 can play at this tanking game… Also this is worse than getting injured on the last preseason game in football, at this point in the nfl the preseason is over. He just got injured during the walkthrough the day before the season kicks off

  • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

Well, it looks like the 1st of 163 got us this year. That is a new one.

  • #1lahairfan

All you can do is shake your head when things like this happen.

    • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

Right. Guessing this could be the difference between the 6th pick and the 3rd pick.

    • DarthHater

Not true. You can also shake your fist. πŸ˜€

      • Drew7

Some shake their canes so violently my screen gets blurry.

  • http://www.justinjabs.com/blog/ justinjabs

Okay, yeah, I apologize for being sarcastic about this on Twitter. I was at another game and didn’t realize the extent of the injury. Man, this really sucks. Selfishly, I hope they don’t DL him – I wanted to see him play on April 13.

  • True(ly) Blue

What’s 5 stitches? If he were a hockey player he would have finished the game. Cool off every one. Not the end of the season!

    • http://401klogic.net Westbound Willie

Barney is a gamer. He’ll play game one for sure. Who are the softies posting here that think he is going to not play game one?

      • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

        The Cubs.

      • Spencer

        Can you read?

      • DarthHater

“Cubs Gold Glove second baseman Darwin Barney suffered a deep cut on his left knee in Saturday’s game against the Astros and will miss Opening Day Monday at Pittsburgh and could be facing a stint on the disabled list.

Brent Lillibridge will start in Barney’s place on Monday and team doctors will decide if he will be placed on the DL in the next day or two, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.”

Try opening your eyes before you open your mouth, Brainiac.

  • MightyBear

Players today are too soft. I remember back in the early 1900’s when Honus Wagner got spiked and had a big long gash in his leg. His teammates packed it with chewing tobacco and wrapped it up and he played the whole game and got the game winning hit. True story. (Well I may not have been there but I read about it so it has to be true.)

    • DarthHater

I never knew a guy named Honus who wasn’t as tough as nails. Then again, I never knew a guy named Honus. πŸ˜›

  • http://meaninginhistory.blogspot.com/ mark

Are the Cubs shopping Alcantara, playing him in these late ST games?

    • George Altman

No….they obviously need middle infielders and Tennessee doesn’t play until Wednesday.

  • Die hard

Why is Sveum still managing? A GM with cahones would’ve fired his butt

  • Die hard

Sandberg would have done better but no loyalty to former Cubs is the norm

  • http://deleted bubbleshargrave

ive been trying to tell you guys that sveum is a moron. now do you believe me?

  • Die hard

Preaching to this choir… Where were you last year?

  • http://deleted bubbleshargrave

i was too busy watching sveum leave marmol in after he walked the bases loaded and then proceeded to give up the winning run. against the reds , remember?

  • Die hard

What about Castro at 2B and give Barney SS when comes back and for now put Valbuna there and buy Fontenot from Orioles for 3B

    • Carew

  • Demarrer

Meh. I guess your annoyance from this injury depends on your opinion of Barney. I am not a Barney fan and think that if the good Lilly shows up, he could be better than Barney. I understand the frustration about playing a player in a meaningless game though.

  • Jono

Man, I hate my favorite team

  • cubchymyst

It is a 162 game season and it tends to wear players out. Most players are rested from time to time, so it makes sense that you would want the players rested before opening day. There was no reason to play regulars today.

  • arta

5 stitches with deep cut/bruise would bench/DL Barney.
