gods-wrathThe disabled list is becoming crowded, and it’s only April 1.

After gashing his knee on Saturday in an exhibition game against the Houston Astros, Darwin Barney was forced to the disabled list today, retroactive to yesterday. He’s got five stitches in the knee, and the Cubs’ docs must not have believed it would heal properly if he kept playing. The earliest Barney can return is April 15, which is one of the few off-days, so he won’t be back until the 16th.

His spot on the 25-man roster is going to be taken by Alberto Gonzalez, the soon-to-be-30-year-old utility infielder. “Journeyman” is the word you’re looking for. The Cubs will need to open up a 40-man roster spot to add Gonzalez, though, and that move has yet to be announced. Having already put Scott Baker and Arodys Vizcaino on the 60-day DL (opening up spots for Brent Lillibridge and Hisanori Takahashi), there may not be an easy maneuver left in the bag.

Here’s something interesting, though: Trey McNutt no longer shows up on the Cubs’ 40-man roster on Cubs.com. No move has been announced, and nothing with McNutt shows up on the transaction wire, so I wonder if he’s in the process of being de-rostered and waived. He’s got serious upside as a reliever, so I’d be shocked if the Cubs risked losing him for nothing (and then did lose him). We’ll see what this is about. Maybe it’s just a mistake on the page. Surely the Cubs wouldn’t give up McNutt just to get a couple weeks of Gonzalez on the bench, right?

UPDATE: Jesse Rogers says it’s going to be Rob Whitenack coming off the 40-man roster to accommodate Gonzalez, which makes a heck of a lot more sense than McNutt. Coming off a long Tommy John recovery, Whitenack had a rough Spring Training and his velocity is way down. He’s not going to get claimed, especially not at this time of year. This doesn’t answer why McNutt isn’t on the official 40-man online, though. A mistake with the names, perhaps?

UPDATE 2: Bruce Miles confirms that Whitenack has been DFA’d to accommodate Gonzalez. I assume he’ll be waived, and I highly doubt he’ll be claimed.

UPDATE 3: As Tobias notes in the comments, McNutt has been returned to the 40-man on Cubs.com, and Whitenack has been removed. I think we can safely assume this was a mere clerical error.

I’d much rather burn 2 weeks of someone like Watkins than risk losing McNutt.

    • Adventurecizin’ Justin

      I agree!

  • andrewmoore4isu

If its not a mistake, maybe they know something that we dont know? He is going to blow out his elbow soon or something like that? If he is gettting waived that would stink. WHERE ARE THE UPSIDE PITCHERS?! Heres to hoping Travis Wood and Jeff Smar have good years. and we can lock up some pitching talent long term.

  • cedlandrum

I hope it is a mistake because McNutt is too good to lose for Gonzalez

  • The Dude Abides

you can’t have too many future middle relievers on your 40 man roster.

  • Kyle

Just call up Vitters, put Clevenger at 3b, Valbuena at 2b. Easy peasy.

    • brickhouse

No way they call up Vitters – I can still see a waiver claim to fill the utility IF role

    Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs 20m
Oy RT @Bulls_Eye23: @ESPNChiCubs what are the odds Baez gets called up now?

    Just knew someone would ask…

  • Kyle

With the reports on Whitenack this spring (mid-80s velocity), he sails through waivers. Which isn’t exactly cause for celebration, of course…

  • Bilbo161

I think they should bring up Watkins. A two week cup of coffe is not going to derail his development at AAA and he deserves it. Minor league player of the rear right? Or is that just a meaningless accolade? Who knows! Give him a shot an stop being so stuck in your ways Theo.

    • Bilbo161

      I’m a bad typist. Sorry.

  • Curt

Gee thanks emperor selig for the meaningless game and dale sveum for putting regulars at risk in said meaningless game , I mean really why have regulars against Astros , come on dale.

  • Die hard

A s@&t storm before first pitch! Terrific

    • gocatsgo2003

Yes… losing Darwin Barney for the first two weeks of the season is REALLY going to make or break this season of extremely low expectations.

    • DarthHater

Yes, a starter got injured before opening day. It’s like a perfect storm of misfortune. :-P

  • Tobias

I looked at the 40 man roster on Cubs.com and McNutt is listed there.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Yup. Looks like they fixed it. (I could post the screenshot of him missing, though ….)

  • Alex S

I wish they hadn’t dropped Cardenas. He didn’t do well pinch hitting in the majors last year, but his minor league numbers were excellent.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I don’t know that any team has picked him up, so I wonder if he decided to give it up.

  • Maximum Terror (aka: Carlos Marmol)

How long is the waiver process for Whitenack? 47 hrs. or is that something else…

    • Kyle

The waiver period is 48 hours, but he doesn’t have to be waived until 7 days after he is DFA’d.
