After a particularly long Spring Training, and a seemingly-long offseason – and after a few down years, which only make the offseasons seem longer – the 2013 Chicago Cubs baseball season is finally here.

No, it doesn’t look particularly bright for the on-field product. But, today, if no other day, you can allow yourself to say things like, “Well, you never know,” and “But the A’s and Orioles!” However we quantify the downside – and it is considerable – this is a sport in which, truly, anything can happen. I’ll hope for a win for the Cubs today, and I’ll take tomorrow when tomorrow comes.

Go Cubs. Go baseball. Go Opening Day.

I really hope the Cubs win today so they are over .500. This may prove to be a rare opportunity!

Funny how the “worst” team in the majors, aka the astros, pulverized one of the better teams aka the rangers on opening day, in front of millions of viewers. This aint the nba, anything could really happen in baseball.

  • OlderStyle

Go Cubs, Opening Day! … and the crowd goes wild… (cue Tom Slick cheers) hooray.

      Give it a few hours.

I mean, obviously we are the best team in baseball! And so goes the emotions of early season baseball!

The story in this morning’s SunTimes spells out the Cubs financial situation. Must read for those who want an explanation as to why the team isn’t spending like other top tier teams.

    Brett,
I just woke up and went to the online version of the local paper and the main article was about the Cubs. I couldn’t figure out why would this hick town in Arizona have an article about the Cubs? Apparently the Cubs played the Pirates in Kingman, AZ April 1, 1924 while traveling back to Chicago by train as a favor for second baseman George Grantham who’s parents lived in Kingman. Oh yea, the Cubs beat the Pirates 17 to 3.

You’ll see in about 7 hours.

      (Don’t get too excited.)

Thanks Brett. I figured you would say something like that. I’ll be sure to let you know if it enhances my game time. :)

Out hear in hinterlands, CO Rox are literally on the rocks as supposedly being worse than the Cubs. WOW I wonder if our July tics in Coors will be valuable? So the race to the bottom is purportedly to be between CO, Pitt, NYM & CHC,

    • Tim Mo

Been a Rox season ticket holder since 05 and this might be the worst team Rockie team in that span. The Monforts have to wake up, O’Dowd and his gang might be the most dillusional front office in MLB.

Just saw a clip from an interview with Samardzija. Sounds like the players know they need to get off to a great start if they want to have a chance to sway the FO towards competing instead of selling at the deadline. Go Cubbies! Be the ball. See the ball. Lay off the balls! Hit the strikes!

  • Idaho Razorback

    Today is next year!

  • cubfanincardinalland

So your telling me there’s a chance!

  • Caleb

Yeah baby! Nothing ever dampens my excitement for opening day.

My mind played it’s own April Fool’s joke on me today when it hesitated, just a moment, before deciding to skip class on go wear my Cubs jersey and watch the game at some Stoopid Cardinals-loving bar here in St. Louis.

    Go Cubs!
