donnie murphy marlinsThe fringe roster transactions are flying fast and furious this afternoon …

Today the Chicago Cubs signed utility infielder Donnie Murphy, formerly of the Marlins, to a minor league deal. He’ll head to AAA Iowa, where there is a strong lack of infield depth (thanks in small part to Alberto Gonzalez being called up to the big league team).

Murphy, 30, did the utility thing in Miami for parts of the last three seasons. He’s a light stick, to say the least – .205/.270/.373 – but he is a quality defender at second and third base, and an average-ish defender at shortstop. That has a little bit of value as a depth piece at Iowa, which is all that Murphy is.

Because the Cubs added Alberto Gonzalez to the 40-man roster, sending him back down to Iowa when Darwin Barney returns is going to require him clearing waivers. If he’s claimed, now the Cubs at least have Murphy in place.

So with Murphy and Sweeney joining Iowa, 2 guys there have to be cut. Guesses? Ty Wright and Tim Torres?

  • Spencer

The more and more I think about the Gonzalez move, the move I dislike it.

“Because the Cubs added Alberto Gonzalez to the 40-man roster, sending him back down to Iowa when Darwin Barney returns is going to require him clearing waivers.”
Perhaps I’m slow, but why is that?

    • wvcubsfan

Wondering the same thing, he can’t be out of options years can he?

      • Kyle

He’s way out of options. He’s already played in parts of 7 MLB seasons.

        • wvcubsfan

This makes less than zero sense to me now.

    • Rebuilding

Is Gonzalez out of options? That would make this move doubly bad

  • wvcubsfan

Sign all of the duds…………..I mean studs

  • Rebuilding

Yeah, I just looked him up. A real head scratcher unless they are already giving up on Lillibridge or they figure they’ll have no problems getting him back through

    • OCCubFan

or they plan to dump him after his 2-week fill-in?

  • another JP

Nothing to be seen here– just another body to help fill the line-up card at Iowa and nothing more. And I bet he never sees a game in Chicago unless it’s from the stands.

  • MightyBear

Losing Whitenack was stupid. Theo, Jed and Sveum are all to blame. For an organization who is so concerned about the lack of pitching in the organization, that was stupid.

  • MightyBear

Now that they got Murphy, is that kid going back to A ball? The one that everyone thought was at AAA because of this nonsense. I can’t remember his name.

    • MikeW

Darvill. That could be one of the 2 that leaves too.

    • gocatsgo2003

Wes Darvill (Canadian kid, I believe) and would have to think so.

  • Melrosepad

I still find it odd we are bringing in some of these players yet we had Adrian Cardenas last year and let him go. Does anyone know if there were attitude problems or something? He was only 25 and did really good at AAA.

  • HubbaBubba

That is an ugly line, but I would rather send guys to the majors as brief fill-ins that have no long-term usefulness (like Murphy) than use up option years in future prospects…especially since most of us know this year is, in all likelihood, a lost year at the major league level.

    • MikeW

Watkins is burning an option year regardless. So is everyone on the 40man.

  • Die hard

See how one Sveum screw up sets off a chain reaction so destructive that its total effects will not be known until 2015 ..a few more like this one should sink Sveum

    • Cub fan bob

I looked at the some of the other MLB rosters the last game of spring training. Other than the Astros they were all playing their regulars for at least their first or second at bats.

        • MightyBear

          Good meme.

  • Die hard

P.S. it’s sink or svim for Sveum

The FO really stinks at bottom of the barrel fishing, fingy player moves. Here we go with all the fringy player moves blogs. They should be in bulletin posts, all lumped in one, rather than having their own discussion, makes it appear as if it’s bigger news than it actual is.
