turner fieldYesterday’s Scott Feldman debut didn’t go so well. Hopefully today’s Carlos Villanueva debut will be better.

The Cubs will be facing young (former) stud righty Julio Teheran, who has not been able to break through at the big league level. He’s reportedly re-crafted his approach this year, and I heard many people say he looked good in the Spring. Given the Cubs’ offensive woes, he might be able to extend it into the regular season.

Brent Lillibridge gets a day off to clear his head after a mighty slow start. That’s fine, but it’s not like Alberto Gonzalez is going to be a consistent upgrade.

(And people thought I was overreacting by being bummed by Darwin Barney’s injury. Face.)

Look on the bright side….. He didn’t walk anyone.

  • IndyCubsFan

Villanueva pitched well! Cubs bats woke up too! Marmol needs to go. Look like he added an extra 20lbs. too!

  • Willie Smith

good job theo and jed………….your bullpen sucks and your offense can’t score with the bases loaded and no outs!!!

  • DarthHater

    • Vulcan

      The motion carries.

  • corey costello

FUCK YOU MARMOL. dump his ass, he’s not worth anything if he keeps getting shelled.

  • Kramden

This keeps up it’ll be a top 2 draft pick

  • YourResidentJag

Even when the Cubs play THEOBALL, they still LOSE! BWHAHAHA!

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

One of my favorite things to do when the Cubs lose is celebrate it. You know, since I’m such a big Cubs fan.

      • YourResidentJag

Why you goin after me? Someone else used the f-bomb in the same sentence with Theo and Jed! Ha, blasphemy, Brett Taylor, blasphemy I tell you!

  • Roger Roper

I was actually excited in the 8th because it wasn’t a save situation. Sveum better not try to say he’s sticking with Marmol after this one!

  • morgan

somebodies job should be on the line after tn, and not just marmol. We gave sveum the benefit of the doubt last year, but hes really coach bad to start this season off. Dejesus can we get rid of him NOW, and bring up Jackson, theres just so many confusing moves to start the season. You can just feel that the players feel theres no hope this year

  • cls

So I’ve heard all the radio personalities supporting the Cubs keeping Marmol as the closer, or at least a set-up guy for now. That may change after tonight, but they all seem to think that “It’s what the team needs. They need to showcase him so he can be traded.”

This is what makes me sick about those comments. We did that LAST YEAR. He was awful until hitting a decent streak in late May/June. He didn’t get traded. Now we are marching him out there again, he’s blowing games (although this is the first one he ACTUALLY blew, the others were close), and his small value is disappearing.

The facts are this. There’s no point in showcasing Marmol. WE KNOW WHO HE IS. So does everyone else. He’s awful. He has had control issues for the last 3 years. He can’t throw strikes when he needs to. And the more we march him out there, the more games he blows, the more of a headcase he becomes. The fans hate him, and rightfully so. There’s literally no value in keeping him out here to show all of baseball what a bad closer he is. The experiment needs to end. We aren’t going to find anything out about this guy we don’t already know. He’s a known quantity and not a good one.

    • RY34

If anyone thinks we are ever trading marmol for anything more than a bag of balls, i want whatever they are smoking. nobody will ever want that chump.

  • morgan

Theres just no energy on this team, and getting 0 runs with the bases loaded and the top of the order up, sickens me to, Dejesus is just worthless

  • Tim

The worst part about tonight, because Fujkawa was bad too, Sveum won’t be able to go to give him the ball. Marmol still the closer, that’s too bad.

The Cubs offense left a good 2 to 3 runs out there. Other poor performances tonight, why did Sveum leave Fujkawa in so long in the 8th when he was struggling?

Such a brutal loss. You could tell the broadcast booth expected it too, when we were batting in the 8th both Len and JD were referring to Marmol’s impending implosion.

    • Jeff

You should have heard the Atlanta broadcasters, “Marmol, when he gets behind in the count tends to throw a get me over the plate fastball that is a few mph slower making him more hittable…So Justin ought to have a pitch to hit here….” Two seconds later it’s in the seats…sad sad sad

  • John

I just don’t get it I seriously think this guy has to be tipping his pitches. Even though the slider isn’t what it used to be he still throws mid 90s. If he is still the closer tomorrow I am done watching. Cant take anymore of these heart breaks.

  • Willie Smith

    don’t worry…………..we are REBUILDING!

    and RIcketts is gettin’ richer……….

    it’s all good.

  • http://bleachernation allen

This team is very fragile. That’s the kind of loss this team can’t afford to have
