jorge soler peoria chiefs cubsChicago Cubs prospect Jorge Soler has been crushing High-A pitching to start the year, and he’s apparently also crushing High-A dugout walls.

Tonight, there was some kind of bench-clearing altercation in the Daytona/Clearwater game that precipitated Soler’s ejection. The details, for now, are of the Twitter-filtered variety (that stream is Josh Timmers), but the gist appears to be: Soler got a bat, and headed toward the Clearwater dugout. He apparently didn’t take any swings at a player, but he did take a swing at the opposing team’s dugout. Like, the dugout, itself.

More details will come in the morning, as I’m sure the Cubs will be forced to respond – plus there will be reports from the scene (and, in the YouTube era, a video somewhere). It seems based on the early take, though, that a suspension is going to be forthcoming. I’d set the over/under at 10 games.

UPDATE: Julio, in the comments, was listening to the game: “Soler slid hard to break up a DP. The second baseman didn’t like it and said something. They shoved each other. Javy broke it up. Benches cleared, everyone went back to dugout (including Soler). Soler then left the dugout with a bat, walked across the diamond and hit the wall, I believe he only hit it once. The announcers speculated it’d be a week suspension. I’d guess two.”

  • DarthHater

Call him up. Get an early start on demolition at Wrigley. :-D

    • whiteflag

      :)

    • http://401klogic.net Westbound Willie

They are calling him Jorge Bradley over on the cubs board. Interesting that Baez has as many errors as he has hits.

      The future looks bright.

      • whiteflag

Cubs Board is a quality establishment. Not

      • caryatid62

You may want to go back there–it seems to fit with the tone of your comments.

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Luke

And I’d not be surprised if the Cubs pulled him out of Daytona not long after that suspension and kept him back in Arizona for a few weeks to let the media find a new headline.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

“Well, you see, Jorge’s been out of action for a little while, so he needs a little time to get back up to speed.”

      • http://www.bleachernation.com Luke

        Prophecy.

  • cubchymyst

Any news on what causes Soler to do that, Did he get hit by a pitch or something?

    • FarmerTanColin

Iowa radio announcers said something about a comment to him but pretty sure that was all speculation.

    • Kyle

He was sliding into second on an inning-ending double play and had words with the 2b. Either the 2b said something really bad or had done something during the DP. Baez had to be held back after charging to join in. Benches cleared. Then Soler does his thing.

      • FarmerTanColin

Threshers CF Kyrell Hudson also tossed from the game. Must have been a reaaally bad comment.

        • DarthHater

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

          Believe he got tossed earlier.

      • Rcleven

        This by SB Nation:

” Soler was apparently stepped on by Alonso and words were exchanged. Both benches cleared. No punches were thrown, however”

    • JoeyCollins

Twitter saying that he didn’t agree with something that was said.

My kinda team, Charlie, my kind of team.

I think we’ve come together pepper.

  • Kyle

It’s awesome and anyone who thinks otherwise is less awesome than this.

  • Vulcan

    Oh….ok….

  • JoeyCollins

If he misses a couple weeks can the cubs just send him to EXST, or is this a straight to anger management kind of thing. Also i bet we can get half the Diamondbacks farm system for him right now. It’s hard to get any grittier than beating up a dugout with a bat.

  • Jeff

I like it! Tired of taking shit from others…I like a fire in a guy……Go Soler!

  • florida Al

this outta make the rematch in Clearwater very interesting unless of course hes not playing then…gunna go…WHOS WITH ME??

  • willis

Interesting development…at least the kid has some fire. Wow.

Interesting reaction to say the least. I’d say they need to work on his people skills a little…can’t help but laugh at this point. Oy.

    • DarthHater

      heh

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Heh. With all appropriate credit. I’d take it as a very high compliment, and also a possible shift in online sentiment …

      • http://bleedcubbieblue.com Josh

Oh yeah, I take it as a compliment.

I blew up Twitter because I just happened to be the only person listening to a D-Cubs game at the time.

      • Rcleven

        Sullivan spelled it wrong.

    • JulioZuleta

Josh, your tweets were just posted to Deadspin.

      • Danny Ballgame

I had a joke about this to go along with the “delivery” at Wrigley today, but instead I hope he didn’t hurt himself

  • fromthemitten

can’t believe somebody overshadowed the goat head delivered to Wrigley Field

    • http://worldseriesdreaming.com/ Jackson Scofield

There may be a correlation, the curse lives on haha

    • MichiganGoat

That’s what set Soler over the top, and yes us goats are plotting a retaliation for our fallen brethren.

      • DarthHater

Careful, Goat. Diehard now thinks you and I are the same person! :-P

P.S. Glad to see you’re in one piece! ;-)

  • Bwitty

I was at the D Cubs game last night. I waved to Soler with a ball in my hand while he was
On his way to the dugout prior to the game. I wished him a good season and he puckered and smooched at me.

    • DarthHater

Is the point when we ask if you’re a man or a woman? ;-)

      • DarthHater

Not that it matters, of course. :-P

      • Bwitty

I’m a man. I don’t know why he blew me a kiss. I figured he was a smartass.

        • hansman1982

Not that there is anything wrong with that…

With the Cubs having CCTV at all of our minor league stadiums what are the odds Theo and Jed have already seen this?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      100%.

      • JoeyCollins

kind of thought so, now only if jed had a Youtube account.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Luke

Somewhere between dead certain and absolutely.

  • mjhurdle

I see a Minor League style promotional event in this somewhere….

Jorge Soler Night~First 500 kids in attendance receive commemorative Mini-Louisville Sluggers and during the 7th inning stretch, they get to rush CF and beat down a styrafoam “dugout” full of candy.

    • DarthHater

      ++

But make it a styrofoam model of the rooftops or a Tunney pinata… :-P

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Haha. You win the comments for today.

(Assuming this doesn’t prove to be a serious problem.)

  • whiteflag

Tom Ricketts was sent goat head? What? How did I miss this today?

    • aCubsFan

Yep. It’s been all over the news this evening. They were talking about it on Sports Central on WGN radio tonight. There is mixed reaction between a joke and sick and twisted intimidation.

      • whiteflag

        Sick and Twisted.

      • DarthHater

Tunney’s making Ricketts an offer he can’t refuse.

  • kuvihorken

sounds like soler needs more guidance from fonsi’.. c’mon be coool.

    • I love marmol

      i disagree

      • kuvihorken

thanks for your 2 cents, mama marmol..

  • Believe in 2015

A fiery personality is a valuable asset to have as long as you can control it. Soler may need to work on that :-)

    • whiteflag

Maybe, Milton will volunteer to mentor Soler. :)

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Luke

And that is probably partly why the Cubs paired Soler and Almora up last year in Arizona.

Almora is said to rate an easy 80 in the character and intangibles area. That’s supposedly a big part of the reason that the Cubs were dead set on taking him no matter what else happened in the draft.

      • http://401klogic.net Westbound Willie

I’m sure that was the reason they took Almora. This is the kind of stuff that can’t just be fabricated out of thin air.

I take it that you’re the resident douche of this blog? I guess every forum has its resident troll. I seem to recall “Next” being used very frequently on the Cubs board by the most clueless of “fans.” Le sigh

          • Kyle

He’s pretty douchey, but I still own the title of resident douche.

            • DarthHater

Perhaps we can promote you to: “Of Douche” :-D

I think Jason Parks would say that Soler showed a lot of #want in his performance.

    • Kyle

      80 want.

    • Angel

Jason Parks regarding the incident on Twitter: “it’s agressive and dangerous but you could call it a form of #want.”

      • Segal27

haha I totally called that, Kyle that is Elite #want, plus plus to be exact.

  • Believe in 2015

A goats head + Soler freak out = End of the world?
It’s been fun y’all, hasta luego!

  • miggy80

Wait, wait, what happened? Jorge Soler knocked a head off a goat and gave it to Ricketts? What?

    • DarthHater

Yep. That’s about the size of it. In Jorge’s defense, knocking the head off a goat and giving it to someone is a sign of great respect in Cuba. ;-)

      • miggy80

LoL, DarthHater if you make it to Des Moines for a game beer’s on me!

  • JulioZuleta

Right now, my gut is saying 10 games, tops. I’ll go 7. Sounds like it wasn’t nearly as bad as initially reported. Twitter makes reports spread like wildfire and grow little by little. Deadspin even picked it up. I think this is going to be a misunderstanding that unfairly makes him look like a maniac. I guess we’ll see.

    • Drew7

      Shall we call it, “Twitter-Creep”?

    • Kyle

      AFAICT, these facts remain undisputed:

      1) Soler was a baserunner, and eventually ended up in an altercation with an opposing player.

      2) Some point after that, he was on the field with a bat in his hands.

He wasn’t a batter who happened to have a bat. He specifically picked up the bat with the purpose, at a minimum, of menacing the other team with its implied utility as a weapon. That’s pretty bad no matter what spin the team tries to put on it.

      • JulioZuleta

Yeah, it’s not good, and he should get at least a week. But there’s a wide gap between what it could be (relatively minor) and the way it was made out to be.

Who knows, maybe he was slurred or something. This seems very out of character.

        • Kyle

Even the most generous interpretations right now have him picking up a bat during a fight and using it to menace the other team. There’s no way to spin that as minor, whether he swung it at the dugout or not.

          • DarthHater

He wasn’t menacing them. He was chasing evil spirits out of their dugout. It’s all a cultural misunderstanding.

            • Jeff

              Go away Jobu…

            • http://401klogic.net Westbound Willie

By tomorrow Jorge will be a hero in this thread and the cubs will have already promoted him to AA

  • Spriggs

I guess there needs to be an addendum to the Cubs Way manual

  • Kramden

Gotta love the hard play, competitiveness and passion. The very traits which Cub teams throughout history have been immune to.

    Bring this guy up asap!

  • Njriv

He probably told Soler that Fidel Castro was stronger than Superman.

  • DaveY

All the references to Milton Bradley… this sounds more like Carlos Zambrano or Carl Everett… Perhaps Joey Belle. Or Juan Mirachal if you want to go way back.

    • Dustin S

Delmon Young was another one that comes to mind. He threw his bat at an ump after getting ejected in a minor league game. Not a light toss either. Soler’s situation wasn’t as bad as that, but if that happened at a big league game ESPN would have had it on slow-motion replay scrolling for the next 2 days straight.

Long-term it’s something that will probably be thought about if/when it is time for Soler to come up to the bigs. Being able to handle life off the field in Chicago with the press, fans, clubs, nightlife, and women (Castro found that out) is a big part of things at the major league level. So they’ll want to make sure he’s mentally mature enough to handle all of that. The 7-10 day suspension isn’t huge problem in the big picture, but if this leads to his arrival in Chicago being slowed down say 1/2 a season or a full season to make sure he doesn’t end up on SportsCenter that is a big deal.
