wrigley field from right bleachersTry, try again. Matt Cain is easier to beat than Ryan Vogelsong, right?

The Cubs take on the Giants in the second game of this four-game set (which also kicks off today’s fantasy contest), and will hopefully at least avoid the painful mistakes of yesterday.

Carlos Villanueva and his awesome mustache get a second start today. He was pretty solid against the Braves last time out.

The big lineup news is that Steve Clevenger is starting at third base, which is assuredly about getting his lefty bat in the lineup over Brent Lillibridge (who is benched in favor of Luis Valbuena at second). It could be an adventure over there, as Clevenger has very little recent experience at third base.

It’s “el bigote” ……… “bi” rather than “bo”. ……don’t know if “bogote is even a word…….

      • baldtaxguy

        Yes, you are right, typo.

  • @cubsfantroy

Although I know it isn’t real, but in my game last night, Cain didn’t make it out of the first after giving up 7 runs and 8 hits in 1/3 of an inning. I love MLB 13 The Show haha.

I can dream that it will happen today, can’t I?

    • Dale’s Ear

If I didn’t allow some very small part of me to believe that video game results are in some way real I would have gone insane a long time ago

      • Dale’s Ear

Well at least as far as sports games go lol

  • cooter

1 through 4 really need to start getting on base. Nate and welington have been killin it but there is no one to hit in. With a team like this I’m a huge fan in moving the order around for whoever is hot. you know how it goes, as soon as the top of the order starts hittin the rest of the order will fall asleep.

  • Big Daddy

Bold Prediction: Clevenger hits a walk off bomb today.

    • TWC

I sure hope so. I just swapped him in to my Draft Street fantasy team. He’s cheap, and I needed a utility pickup.

  • miggy80

Nice to see Valbuena at 2b and The Clever at 3rd today. Hope to see some production out of the bottom of the line up today.

  • cubmig

while waiting for game time am watching the 6th game of the 2003 Marlins/Cubs playoff…… Lofton’s single in the 7th, just made it 3 – 0 Cubs!!!! ………..ahhhhhh…..memories……that soothed and stung.

  • al

“…Steve Clevenger is starting at third base…”

Talk about taking one for the team, bless his heart. And to think this is just the opening home stand.

  • Blublud

Feeling pretty good. Was able to get Fielder, Trout, Harper, Cabrera, Stanton and Castro in my line up for fantasy. Yeah baby. Show me the money. :)

    • DarthHater

      What? No Campana? Hypocrite! 😉

      • Tobias

I’m surprised that no one has drafted Campana and only Campana because of the scrap factor.

  • JulioZuleta

Carl NewHouse ith 29 pitche through 3..an 44 thru 2

    • JulioZuleta

Try that again. Carl NewHouse with 29 pitches through three IP. Matt Cain with 44 through 2 IP.

    • DarthHater

I think somebody fired a high hard one at Julio while he was typing. 😉

      • JulioZuleta

Hah, I was trying to look at my professor while typing. Need to practice some Mavis Beacon programs.

        • Drew7

          Mavis Beacon…SMH

        • DarthHater

Mavis Beacon Teaches Pretending to Pay Attention in Class?

  • Rebuilding

Not a professional batting coach obviously, but man I wish Castro would get rid of that wide open stance. He constantly appears to be lunging as he moves his front leg back past squared up. It seems to me that he just started doing that before last year, but I can’t remember. It seems he is moving sideways and not loading from the back

    • Rebuilding

      I did it! Reverse jinx

  • Mike

After Schierholtz double, Castillo should have bunted him over to third. Clevenger sac fly could have scored Schierholtz. So much for small ball….instead, we just had to have Castillo swing away, which might make sense, if we weren’t facing Cain. Sveum makes no sense to me.

    • TWC

Totally. The best hitter on the team (so far) should be bunting.

      • Mike

Guess we didn’t need that extra run with Castillo not bunting, two runs were enough to lose the game.

        • TWC

YEAH! You told me, Mikey! ZING!

          • Mike

I did, thank you for noticing. :)

    • JulioZuleta

Bunting with Wellington in that situation only makes sense in the 8th or 9th when you’re down a run or tied. You don’t take the bat out of the hands of your best hitter so far, especially when he’s followed by a couple of journeymen. That would have killed the possibility of a big inning, and would have statistically made Schierholz less likely to score the run.

    • DocPeterWimsey

I think that I hear Earl Weaver screaming obscenities from his grave. Of course, that might be the default mode!

    • Rebuilding

Castillo bunting in that situation would have been a poor percentage play. If you hit on 19 in blackjack you might win from time to time, but that doesn’t make it the right percentage move

      • TWC

        Bah. Facts, shmacts.

  • Stu

At least Barney is coming back.

  • JR

I’m loving Villanueva’s porn stache out there. It seems to give him extra stamina on the mound!

  • JulioZuleta

Am I the only person who, while watching MLB gameday online, gets the urge to yell at umpires based on where the computer puts the ball in the zone? Villanueva just threw two that, at least in the simulation, are like right down the middle but were called balls. These umps are blind.

    • TWC

I really wonder how umps view the Pitchf/x data. Do you think they even believe its accuracy?

      • JulioZuleta

I’m sure they don’t like it. It either makes their strikes look like balls, or their balls look like strikes. I don’t think anyone has ever seen a pf/x pitch and said “good call, blue.” It’s only negative for them.

        • TWC

Oh, I’d bet they really haaaate it. I just wonder if they believe it, or if they believe that their eyes are more accurate.

  • Matty Ice

Fuck Sveum. Why pull Villinueva at 93 pitches?

    • TWC

      Calm down, kid.

In the late innings, you play the percentages. That was a lucky grounder. These things happen.

If Villanueva was still pitching with the same results as Russell’s had, you’d have someone else freaking out about Sveum leaving him in.

      • wvcubsfan

Especially since Villanueva was starting to get hit a little harder.

    • DarthHater

Gee, Sveum’s defensive substitutions at 2nd and 3rd led to that double play. Screw that guy!

  • DarthHater

Okay, closer time, Cubs fans. Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet’s get ready grumble!!!! 😛

    • wvcubsfan

      great call :(

      • DarthHater

Between the quality of the Cubs’ bullpen and the propensity of BN dwellers to kvetch, it’s a pretty safe bet. 😉

  • DarthHater

Time for another double play. 😀

  • ProfessorCub

    *takes shot*
*dreams about the Arodys Vizcaino era*

  • Jeff

    Number #1 draft pick in 2014 :)

  • #23

If only Marmol were still the closer. *sigh*

  • mudge

Again, Russell can pitch two innings here. Stupid stupid stupid. Stupid.

  • Brian

  • Alex

    Losing Ugly!

  • Stu

Couldn’t just leave Russell in there. Such BS.

  • DarthHater

  • Kygavin

Instead of using a “closer” why not just play matchups? Have marmol/camp/fuji pitch vs righties and russel vs lefties. Obviously having a “closer” isnt working

    • DarthHater

  • KidCubbie

I don’t understand how this happens over and over again.

    • DarthHater

      Really? You don’t understand it?

      (1) Try looking at the Cubs’ roster.
      (2) Read Kygavin’s comment above.

      Any questions? 😉

  • JOE

I feel like Dioner Navarro is a guy who should have a killer nickname based on his stature and demeanor. Any suggestions?

  • ProfessorCub

Love it, but of course I have Romo in the fantasy contest :)

    • DarthHater

This is why I despise fantasy games. 😛

  • ProfessorCub

Is Hairston nicked? Why Lillibridge over him in this spot?

    • Kygavin

must have felt Lillibridge’s .050 OBP was the best bet to get a baserunner

all seriousness i think it was because Navarro hit for Gonzalez and Lillibridge is going in to play 2B so he didnt waste a bench guy by pinch hitting Hariston then still having to bring in Lillibridge
