We’re without Luke for a few days, which means you’ll get my brief take on yesterday’s minor league games.

  • The struggling Iowa Cubs dropped another one to the Albuquerque Isotopes, 11-5. Ryan Sweeney continues to destroy AAA, as you would expect him to. With another couple hits and a homer, he’s got a 1.183 OPS over 34 plate appearances.
  • The Tennessee Smokies blew a big lead and lost late to the Huntsville Stars, 8-7. (Smokies players are clearly ready for the show with their parent club.) Rubi Silva had another three hits (including a homer), and has a 1.121 OPS on the young season. It’s easy to forget that, just two years ago, he was a $1 million bonus recipient out of Cuba.
  • The Daytona Cubs blew out the Clearwater Threshers, 8-1. Although Stephen Bruno and John Andreoli continue to rake, Javier Baez went 0-5 with two strikeouts. Ben Wells went six scoreless, allowing just six baserunners and striking out four.
  • Kane County’s game was rained out (or was it snowed out?).

To make up for the lack of minor league writing today, can I offer you these excellent minor league photos, courtesy of┬áDan Bakke at Midwaymadness.com. I’ve got a set of Kane County pictures up at the BN Facebook page for your perusing pleasure. For example, there’s this one of Dan Vogelbach showing off his movement in the field, with Gioskar Amaya ranging in the background:

I like the early start to the day!

    • http://401klogic.net Westbound Willie

The title should have said “making do do”

  • JBarnes

Holly hell is that infield uneven in the picture…hopefully nobody takes a bad hop to the dome.

  • ssckelley

Disappointing to see McNutt blow a game like that with a big lead.

    • EQ76

      “the Cubs way”

  • Kyle

Baez’s last PA was a strikeout against a position player pitching to cap the blowout. Hopefully, that’s the rock bottom that he bounces back from.

  • Idaho Razorback

What’s up with Luke. Hope all is well.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

He’s OK. I’ll leave it to him if he wants to get into the details. He just needed a few days. That’s all.

  • Dan

With Sweeney playing so well what are the chances of bring him up giving him an outfield spot and move Harrison to 2nd (heard he has played there before) to give us more offence ?

    • Melrosepad

Hairston played 704 innings at 2nd back in ’04 and 2.1 innings there in the years since. Only reason I know is I thought the same thing until I saw how long ago it was.

  • Dan

    offense sorry

      • Cubbie Blues

A few of his lines so far in AAA
        BABIP .714
        AVG .500
        OBP .615
        wRC+ 228
        PA 13

        Gotta love sample sizes.

Mike Olt is hitting .111 with no homers and three RBI in 45 at bats so far in the minors. For everyone who thought he was the 3b answer, it has not looked so good so far this year.

    • EQ76

the key part being “so far this year”.

      • terencemann

45 at bats is nothing. I’m not worried about any of the Cubs minor league players who are off to slow starts nor am I that impressed with players off to hot starts so far.

  • ari gold

Just want to point out that Jorge Soler has played in a couple EX spring training games over the past few days at Fitch park so at least he’s continued to get some at bats. I think his suspension ends today though.

  • PRcajun

    Darwin Barney 4-5 with a double and 2 runs…nice!
Ian Stewart 0-4 with 2 SO…not so nice.

    • willis

I can’t wait for him to return and save our black hole at 3rd.

  • Zachary

Baez has looked ugly so far this year . He swings at everything

  • RD

Sorry if I missed this in a recent post or comment, but are there any minor league player injury updates on guys like Almora, Vitters, Lake, and Maples?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

You haven’t missed it – minor league injury information is very closely guarded by the organization, and is rarely discussed too openly or specifically. Not sure what’s up with Maples, but Vitters is battling a bad back, and Lake and Almora are still expected back in May. Weak update, I know.

  • RD

Thanks for the info, Brett. Love the site and appreciate the hard work of you and Luke- hope to see him back soon!

  • Blackie Lawless

    That pic of Vogelbach rocks.
