julio borbon rangersWell how about that. A day after I went to reasonable lengths to explain why it wouldn’t make much sense for the Cubs to claim waived Rangers outfielder Julio Borbon …

The Cubs went and claimed him. He announced the move himself on Twitter with an excited “Chicago Cubs!!!” tweet. What do I know.

The 27-year-old center fielder bats lefty and certainly gives the Cubs an abundance of fringy outfield options to work with during/after the expected midseason purge. Even after moving, for example, Alfonso Soriano and David DeJesus, the Cubs now have enough cover, with Borbon and Ryan Sweeney (currently crushing at AAA), that they wouldn’t have to rush Brett Jackson if he’s still not ready for a full-time job in the bigs. They’ve also still got Brian Bogusevic down at Iowa, too. Obviously the outfield production in a post-DeJesus/Soriano world would be brutal, but that’s to be expected. At least guys like Borbon and Sweeney are interesting.

As for Borbon, himself, he’s had a number of chances to establish himself in the bigs with the Rangers and hasn’t been able to make it work. After being selected 35th overall by the Rangers in 2007, Borbon was signed to a Major League deal (that paid him decent money and rushed him to the Majors), and never had a whole lot of time to develop in the minors. He hit decently there, and played quality center field. He doesn’t have much pop, but he’s got speed and doesn’t strike out. As a bench outfielder, he could be a very good one. Even as a fill-in starter, he could be acceptable.

The logistics of the claim: Borbon is out of options, so, if the Cubs intend on keeping Borbon, they’ll have to put him on the 25-man roster immediately. Otherwise, they could now try and waive him, themselves, and hope he clears (he’s already made it through the American League, and past the Astros). As far as the 40-man goes, someone will have to be booted to accommodate Borbon, and it could be – for example – new arrival Cody Ransom.

I’ll have a lot more on Borbon when his place on the roster shakes out. This could be the start of a significant shakeup, either by way of someone like Dave Sappelt going on waivers himself, or by way of a trade involving someone like David DeJesus within the next couple weeks. Obviously the former is far more likely than the latter, but the glut of outfielders – especially lefties – at the AAA/MLB level is becoming noteworthy.

UPDATE: To make room for Borbon on the 25-man and 40-man rosters, infielder Alberto Gonzalez has been designated for assignment. He wasn’t long for the roster anyway with Darwin Barney back and Ian Stewart coming back soon. This gives the Cubs at least a week or two – until Stewart returns – to figure out how to solve the outfield glut. I expect they’ll be doing some hard shopping. In the meantime, the infield depth on the 25-man roster is incredibly thin. It’s pretty much Cody Ransom and the starters.

So our infield bench consists of Cody Ransom?!?!? Theta great!! Who in the hell is Cody Ransom. If we’re trying to construct a team that’ll help us-“relocate the team to Miami”, this is the way to do it Rachel Phelps… -major league

    • Cubbie Blues

I just went back and checked. I had in my head that Cody had a much better year than he did last year.

      • #1lahairfan

        Same.

  • Stu

Bourbon is out of options. Trade has to be coming.

    • Nebraska Cubs

Hey man, its Borbon, I know its Friday but its only 2 in the afternoon and I’m still 5 hours away til i can have my Jim Beam and Coke

      • bbmoney

ewwwww, why would you mix jim beam with coke?

        • Spriggs

          Out of RC?

          • bbmoney

ha. I guess I’m more concerned about ruining of two perfectly good drinks by mixing them together.

          • Cubbie Blues

            You misspelled Crown Royal.

            • Nebraska Cubs

              Crown Maple, tried that?

              • Cubbie Blues

Nope. Seen it in stores though. I’ve even seen free samples. I’m actually more of a Vodka man myself.

Shocked, you didn’t go with Templeton Rye that is some good stuff that is made in Iowa

                • TWC

Really? That’s made in Iowa? I had no idea. Good stuff.

                  • hansman1982

Ya, supposedly the commercial recipe is based off the original. However, people who’ve drunk both don’t think so. Local legend is only 2 people are given the recipe at a time and during prohibition if the recipe got out they were obliged to go kill the other.

                  • Ron

What no idea?! You must have been boozed up when we had that conversation on twitter a year ago. Templetom Rye is one reason i go back home….not really but we usually have some while hanging out at the local native grass store.

                    • TWC

That’s almost enough to make me want to head out to Iowa.

Well, no. I’ll go to the liquor store instead.

                • hansman1982

The only Templeton Rye I’ve had is the stuff that you have to hear a word or two of when to go to the Church in Templeton and leave $20 and an empty bottle on the steps, drive around the block and *poof* there it’d be.

Thankfully, my Grandpa used to run it to Omaha and we had better ears to hear the whispers.

                • falselife

Since it’s correction day here, Templeton Rye is made in Indiana. Company is based in Iowa, but it’s distilled out of state.

                  • lukers63

They are now distilling in state again…..or will be soon. Another good bourbon made in Iowa is Cedar Ridge Iowa Bourbon. Top ten bourbon accolades when it was released.

        • Nebraska Cubs

JB’s devils cut, have u tried it? delish

          • bbmoney

Not with coke. But yes Devil’s Cut by itself (or an ice cube if you must) is outstanding

      • TWC

Ugh — what is wrong with you people?

A bottle of Bulleit Rye, Maker’s Mark, or if it’s a special occasion, Paddy Van Winkle, is all you need.

        • SirCub

Maker’s Mark, to me, tastes like a drink of cold water after a long march through the desert. Just exactly what I want. All the time.

          • TWC

Yeah, me too, although not as much as Jameson. I’ve disappeared gallons of that at a time.

            • frank

I like Woodford Reserve, Tullamore, and Maker’s if they don’t have those two. I’ve found Jameson to be inconsistent from bottle to bottle–anyone else find that, or is it just me? Templeton if I feel like a rye.

          • butlerdawgs

Makers is by far my favorite. Speaking of Crown Maple; I was at Ruth’s Chris last night here in Indy. They had an appetizer called the sizzling bacon steak. Of course I’m going to try that. It’s basically just a 10 oz hunk of bacon from a local butcher shop here in town that is grilled up to perfection. The kicker was that after they brought it out, the bartender sprinkled some Crown Maple on top of it…I could have died and been totally happy at that point in my life.

          • MichiganGoat

Okay I know I’m late to this conversation but Markers Mark is why I rarely ever touch bourbon. I drink that stuff like I drink beer and that creates a very very very very bad goat. I really stay away from the hard stuff since I never sip it slowly like one should. But Marker’s Mark is absolutely amazing and visiting the distillery is a great experience.

        • Hee Seop Chode

I couldn’t agree more. Bulleit Rye is where the party’s at. In fact, I think i’ll leave work and have a sip now. Happy weekend boys (and girl).

    • cubchymyst

If you really want to go with a true Chicago drink go find some Jeppson Malorts

This is what the label reads:
“Most first-time drinkers of Jeppson Malort reject our liquor. Its strong, sharp taste is not for everyone. Our liquor is rugged and unrelenting (even brutal) to the palate. During almost 60 years of American distribution, we found only 1 out of 49 men will drink Jeppson Malort. During the lifetime of our founder, Carl Jeppson was apt to say, ‘My Malort is produced for that unique group of drinkers who disdain light flavor or neutral spirits.’It is not possible to forget our two-fisted liquor. The taste just lingers and lasts – seemingly forever. The first shot is hard to swallow! PERSERVERE. Make it past two ‘shock-glasses’ and with the third you could be ours…forever”

Haven’t tried it yet myself but my brother likes the stuff.

      • Andrew

love my malort but the label doesnt say that anymore unfortunately. Looking at my bottle, the label says:

Jeppson Malort has the aroma and full-bodied flavor of an unusual botanical. It’s bitter taste is savored by two-fisted drinkers.

Also nobody likes it, but its fun to give it to people and watch the evolution of their facial expression as the taste gets worse and worse. Every sip i take tastes fine at first, then it progressively grows into a fascinatingly terrible taste that almost reminds you of a very moldy grapefruit.

        • Rebuilding

I’m sorry that I never saw the original label. That’s classic. Malort tastes much like what I imagine Windex tastes like and it does linger. Strangely, it does grow on you

      • Hee Seop Chode

I live in Chicago, and have tried Malort. I can report that it is unequivicably awful.

        • Mr. Brent Kennedy

I won a wager against another guy in my office. He thought Sveum would be fired after one year. He took three shots in a row of Malort on Opening Day. I bet him double or nothing after the second year as well. By year three he might have to down the entire bottle.

Can anybody tell me what the 25 roster will look like by July 1st. My guess is it really doesn’t matter, All they need is 25 bodies. Doesn’t matter if the bullpen is a mess. Doesn’t matter if there’s no depth in the infield. Doesn’t matter that they’ve got a logjam in the outfiel and it really doesn’t matter who they’ll draft. If its a college pitcher, he won’t be available to the big leagies for two years. It seems like the cubs are going to go for free agents big tine for this off season. They might even get out of the celler in two years after two years, not before that.

I don’t hate it. I don’t really get it, and wish he was RH so the Cubs could send Sappelt packing. But that’s not the case so it is a very curious move. He’s got some upside clearly, but at 27 is he going to turn into much more?

It’s a throw shit against the wall type of move. If it works, genius. If it doesn’t (like none of their shit/wall moves have) then oh well, no big deal I suppose.

  • DONNIE621

This is all getting very boring. The Cubs are almost un-watchable as it is. But now they are going to treat us to a bunch of guys no one wants and get rid of the guys that produce. Last year when they dumped their pitchers and others the team took a nose dive… but that was August. This is April. I understand some of this but really come on!

No, Borbon did NOT clear the American League. Cubs had #2 priority.

    • Andrew

cubs have #1 priority in the NL, but every team in the league he was originally in gets priority over the other league.

      • SirCub

So do the Astro’s have the number one priority in the AL now?

      • HackAttack

There is no American League / National League priority at this time of year (just after the trade deadline.). It’s just worst record. I believe for the first 30 days of the season it goes on last years final records.

Check out AZ Phil’s corner at TCR, Loads and loads of transaction rule type stuff over there.

    • JulioZuleta

It starts at the bottom of the league of the DFA’ing team. Goes from last to first through that league, then last to first in the other league. Rankings based on prior year’s record. Not sure how something like the Stros changing leagues effects it, I assume they’re in the AL portion of waiver claims, even though last year they were in the NL. Either way, he passed them.

  • http://www.bairsdenuni.wordpress.com BAIRSDEN

Byrd was traded on April 21st. Makes a dude wonder if Jed/Theo have some feelers out on DDJ and Soriano. Mets are looking to upgrade their outfield, maybe they’re a suitor for DDJ.

No questioning that this move puts the 25 man in a peculiar position. 4-5 games and 16-20 more at-bats and Ian could finally be back. Then again as young as the infield is I think that gives Jed the ability to have this lack of depth for the next 5-10 days.

Wouldn’t mind seeing a trade for a solid bullpen arm. I was skeptical of that group coming into this year but I don’t know if a ‘competitive’ move like that is what the FO has in mind. (sigh)

  • jt

They have Kevin Gregg in the bullpen!
    I don’t drink!
I may if they actually use him!!!
I hope a trade is in the works.

  • mysterious4th

I understand the idea of depth at both MLB and AAA level. I kind of like this for the simple fact it is cold in chicago and that means a better chance of somebody cramping up/pulling a muscle. Jed and Theo must see something good in this guy. I could have lived without this waiver pick up but I see why they did it.

  • BT

I’m assuming the Cubs like Borbon’s potential more than Sweeney’s. That’s probably the end of it. If it doesn’t work out, the end result is we MAY have lost Alberto Gonzalez.

Hairston came up through the minors as primarily a 2nd baseman, and has played there a bit as a major leaguer. He can play there if need be. Not every day, but neither was Gonzalez.

Seems to be a lot of teeth gnashing over a minor roster reshuffling.

  • Fastball

I think mgmt has determined Jackson isn’t going to make it. These two guys Sweeney and Borbon are probably viewed as better than Jackson. If there is a trade it won’t be anytime soon. We can always promote Watkins he is on the roster. Good ridince Gonzalez and Lillibridge. Houston is always looking for help

    • MXB

I agree on Jackson not making it. His change in batting hasn’t produced any noticeable results — still striking out a lot, low AVG/OBP/SLG/OPS in a league (PCL) that is said to be hitter’s league. Yes, I know…small sample size, too early in the season…but if the target was to bring him up to the bigs midseason, he’s not performing.

  • YourResidentJag

Matt Harrison, SP of Texas Rangers, out until after All-Star Break. Garza traded sooner than we think?

  • Die hard

So why did Cubs trade Campana again?

    • JulioZuleta

Because he is really, really bad at baseball.

      • SirCub

It’s all relative. I’d really like to play catch with one of the (many) former Cubs that I’ve chastised for having a weak throwing arm, like Campy. I’m sure I would break a finger within the first 5 minutes.

    • DarthHater

You mean that guy who’s currently hitting .079 in the PCL, right?

    • DocPeterWimsey

Because the DBacks were dumb enough to trade for him.

      • http://401klogic.net Westbound Willie

Yea Theodore really duped the d backs just like he does every time!,

        Lol

        Next

        • Tim

So you think the Cubs got the wrong end of the deal? The Cubs could have got more for a guy who couldn’t hit, or play defense? Really????? Westbound continues to prove his intellectual prowess

        • Cubbie Blues

You really are an ass aren’t you?

  • Barroof

They would have been better off signing Pedro Borbon. His arm should be plenty rested right about now. Happy thoughts…. Happy thoughts

I like the bourbon pick up!

This is a perfect pick up for a bad team. Roll the dice…maybe a change of scenery will do him good.

He has speed. Lead him off everyday and see what u have.

God I wish someone would take soriano off our hands! Theo and the boys have some options in the outfield. I’d like to see the guys who might stick with us in some capacity play so we know what we have. Soriano is just clogging up an outfield position. Hendry was such a dope.

    • http://thenewenthusiast.com dw8

I also love the Bourbon pick up. Although I would have preferred them pick up Bushmills. Sometimes Bourbon is too sweet for me! ;)

      • TWC

Bushmills? You drink that protestant crap?! Damn.
