great american ballparkSeems like it would be impossible not to be hungover from a loss like the one the Cubs suffered last night. Then again, they’ve suffered heartbreaker after heartbreaker this year, and they keep putting themselves in a position to be heartbroken again. This team loses a lot, but it doesn’t really get blown out.*

That’s largely been thanks to the starting pitching, which has been great. Carlos Villanueva has been as good as anyone, and he goes again for the Cubs tonight. Fear The Stache.

For the Reds, it’s Tony Cingrani, a young lefty who is likely to dominate the Cubs’ almost-all-righty lineup. Said lineup features the first start for Cody Ransom, if you were looking for an exciting story line.

*Yes, I know that will be thrown right back at me if they get blown out tonight.

All season we have found new ways to lose. BUT, I don’t believe we have had 2 blown saves in game yet. Seems like the only thing that could top last night.

    • Drew7

Camp and Bowden each had a BS in the last game of the Giants series.

Its not like thats Barney’s first go ahead hit or home run. I actually feel good when he is up in situations like that. Not most of the rest of the time, but when the game is on the line I feel confident he will put the bat on the ball. BTW is Borbon a better Campana?

  • Chuckles

I just got in from work.. am I getting this straight that Marmol blew another save and he’s not even our closer? Somebody should sign this team up for the comedy club.

  • hardtop

who was it that said that villanueva had to be perfect… doesnt get much better than that. not perfect but couldnt ask for any better.

    A HIT WITH RISP!!!!!!!;&?¢&/839-@:&!;/;!!?>~{\*~#%€\*\+£~>!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pat

I’ve been defending Sveum since he has essentially nothing to work with, but I can’t fathom the reasoning for putting Marmol in there.

  • Kygavin

So who saw Barney Borbon and Sappelt leading this rally?

  • hardtop

man, does that reds catcher look like a truck stop porn watchin’ big rig driver, or what?

    • Rebuilding

      ^^^LOL

  • Chuckles

Marmol shouldn’t be put in the position of having to close out games until June. If I remember correctly his most dominant performances are in the hot summer months. If they are trying to shop him I think he should be very limited this early in the season and get him plenty of work for a month or two before the trade dead line.

      Amen.

  • DarthHater

Hmm. Bringing in a righty to face Rizzo? This seems fortuitous…

    Gregg! Long time brother!

Pat: The Reds are not done yet…predicting worse?

      • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

MF Choo or is it Gregg. Gregg.

  • Rebuilding

A year ago, who in the world would have thought Kevin Gregg would be closing out a game for us in 2013? Strange game

  • Kygavin

Might not be the best place for this but Choo is ridiculous right now

  • Rebuilding

Is Russell hurt? Why is our best reliever still sitting on his ass

  • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

2 Down! Oh, snap: Joey Votto.

  • DarthHater

    WOOHOO!

  • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

    Hey! Hey! We got one!

  • college_of_coaches

    I’m confused. What just happened?

    • DarthHater

Don’t worry about it. It’s not likely to happen again any time soon. ;-)

  • JOE

Go Cubs Go! Gregg sure doesn’t make anything look pretty, but hey I’ll take ‘em any way they come!

  • Rebuilding

Somewhere, Jim Hendry smiles over a scotch and tells himself he was right about Kevin Gregg

  • curt

Great that the cubs hung on for the win but what an injustice marmot blows it again but ends up getting the win.

    • JulioZuleta

To be fair, it was a ground ball about 1 foot from an infielder, not like it was a deep liner or a homerun.

  • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

    Carlos ‘The Vulture’ Marmol fits.

  • hardtop

just so we’re clear: my kid won that game. when marmol gave up the tying run, i told my 5 year old to”have a seat, the cubs were going to lose”. she ran into her room, stood on a chair that was less than stable to reach “up high”, grabbed her blue baseball cap with a red C, and ran out wearing pink princess pajamas and a Cubs cap. she yelled “go cubs” at the top of her lungs and punched me in the leg for giving up!

poor little thing, i may have ruined her life ;)

blind faith…. its a beautiful thing… and the foundation of the a long line of Cubs fans.

  • DocPeterWimsey

Funny (and sad) but true: MLB.com At Bat sent me an update stating that the Reds had won 3-2 in the 9th. (I was listening the Cubs batting in the 10th when I got that, so I wasn’t too worried.)
