Quantcast

Well, it’s not like Mat Latos isn’t good.

The Cubs’ bats came up with bupkis today, and lost another one-run game. They had a good chance in the 8th when a couple quick base runners bounced Latos from the game, but a sac bunt, a Soriano strikeout, and a great play up the middle ended the threat. And then it was Aroldis Chapman time. (Incidentally, wouldn’t it be nice to have a guy like that in the 9th?)

Jeff Samardzija pitched well enough to win today, though he did give up quite a few hits. He worked out of several jams by way of the strikeout, and all in all pitched fairly well.

  • DarthHater

If the Cubs could just manage to never take a lead into the late innings, their bullpen would probably perform much better.

    • Die hard

Yep– must’ve hurt to squeeze that one out

      • DarthHater

Wow, you haven’t used that line in almost a week. Don’t you have some obvious facts to ignore?

  • Montana Hipster

Just think, only a little over 5 more months of this!

    • hansman1982

If the Cubs continue to average 3 runs a game for the rest of the year, I’ll eat my face.

      • DarthHater

Put a little of this on your face and you’ll eat it anyway:

Not sure, precisely how I personally attacked you but it’s good to see you are very mature. If I didn’t know better I’d call you Morken.

  • arealpoy

theo and jed put together a sharp rotation with good depth and it’s performed well above my expectations. definitely wish some of their voodoo had worked on the offense though. i guess we need to be patient.

and wow…that home run was an absolute monster.

    • EQ76

“theo and jed put together a sharp rotation with good depth and”…. a crap bullpen, defense and offense with no depth…

  • mdavis

I don’t know, call me crazy but with guys on 2nd and 3rd, less than two outs i prefer a contact hitter. put the ball in play and give yourself a chance. i get it, sori is one of our better hitters, but he does K a lot. shark continues to impress. didn’t have his best stuff and still battles and gives his squad a chance to win.

    • willis

Bingo. Soriano was destined to K there. High pressure situation against a guy that throws hard as hell and likes to miss bats. Someone else should have been up in that situation. Soriano is too all or nothing with his swings. Needed a shortened approach there. That’s just not him. Another situational mistake.

      • jt

and to think it could have been Tony Campanas…..
        Somebody had to say it……

      • cubmig

Ransom should have been allowed to swing for a hit rather than bunt imho.

  • mudge

Use Russell to win games. Bring him in in the 7th or 8th when you’re ahead and let him pitch 2-3 innings per outing and win two or three games a week for you. I don’t understand the Ransom bunt. Guy’s swinging the bat good with two on and nobody out.

    • MikeL

“let him pitch 2-3 innings per outing”

That would be an absolutely awful idea and a really good way to burn out the arm of your most consistent reliever by the start of June.

      • mudge

Not really. Give him a couple days off after an outing. Gossage used to throw 2-3 inning saves and he lasted through lots of Junes.

    • Kyle

He’s not really swinging the bat well. It’s an illusion brought on by having a ground ball and a bloop find holes.

      • MightyBear

        ?

  • Koyie Hill Sucks

I don’t get why Soriano was brought in to pinch hit in the 8th, you needed a contact hitter out there, or at least the cubs version of one…

    • Jed Jam Band

What if Soriano IS the Cubs version of one?

    • willis

Only blind defenders of Sveum could say that it was a good decision. It was an awful decision.

      • Koyie Hill Sucks

        That’s like 90% of people here…

        • hansman1982

So who should have Dale put in the game?

          • Edwin

            Barry Bonds.

            • hansman1982

Shoot, I didn’t even know he was on the roster. Dang, he is in Dale’s doghouse something fierce.

              • DarthHater

He can’t get out because his head won’t fit through the doghouse door…

          • Koyie Hill Sucks

            hahaha, case in point…

Barney was the better choice there imo, the last thing you want is a guy that strikes out as much as Soriano…

            • jt

A ground ball to the pitcher would have been much better

      • Chad

Who would you rather have had up there pinch hitting, and tell me if Sveum would’ve ran someone else out there and he would have struck out you would have been like “why not put Soriano out there, he’s the best hitter on the bench today”.

        Options were:
        Soriano
        Sappelt
        Hairston
        Barney
        Pitchers

Couldn’t use Castillo cause he already pinch ran for Navarro

You’re telling me you wouldn’t have picked Soriano because everyone else has been so great this year????

      • King Jeff

I wouldn’t say it was a “good” move, but it wasn’t awful considering what there is to work with, and that Soriano is batting 6 for 17 in late game close situations this season. I know, small sample size, but I think there are better things to skewer Svuem about than this move.

    • hansman1982

The team’s best contact hitter was already in the game. Soriano was the best hitter on the bench and the most likely to make contact that would make it to the outfield (and out of the park).

Unless you wanted one of Hairston or Sappelt up there? (cue the rant about something else)

      • Jason P

        How about Barney?

        • Jason P

Nevermind, didn’t see the comment below.

    • Edwin

It depends. Soriano has around a 20% K rate. A contact hitter like Barney has around a 10% K rate. In one at bat, does the variance between the two really matter?

      • hansman1982

I forgot Barney was on the bench. That dude is super-clutch! DAMN YOU DALE! FIRE DALE! FIRE DALE!

        • willis

Yes, barney. Hell no not Sappelt or Hairston, I’d rather you go up and hit instead of them. And it isn’t that Barney is Mr. Clutch. And it isn’t that he is just some awesome hitter. But, NO contact=no chance of run. Barney has a better chance at making contact there. Yes, Soriano is one of the team’s best hitters, but that’s not the argument. The problem is that’s all Dale sees and not the situation. Contact gives them a chance, a strikeout results in what we saw, 2nd and 3rd strandad.

And with Broxton pitching, it was super obvious what would happen. Whiff whiff whiff. Game over.

        • Koyie Hill Sucks

Why do you want to fire Dale?

  • http://Www.aorrockstop.com The Full Monty

    Everyday same results….
I hope Garza gets better so we can
Finish the Borbon deal b4 they want him back!!’

    • King Jeff

      What are you talking about?

      • TWC

This is the insane conspiracy theory that Texas waived Borbon knowing that the Cubs would pick him up, and that he would be the first part of an eventual Garza-to-Texas deal.

        It’s shockingly stupid.

By waiving him, it allowed another team — Houston — the first chance to claim him. (Or was Houston in on the conspiracy, too, guys? You might need to adjust your tinfoil hats to find out.) What’s most ignorant about this theory is that the Rangers could have very well just traded Borbon to the Cubs for a PTBNL … but didn’t. Why? Because there’s no fracking conspiracy, idiots.

        • Whiteflag

          • TWC

I know I’m just taking the bait here, but why? Why? Why not just trade Borbon to the Cubs for a PTBNL?

            Explain that.

            • Bric

Because what you don’t understand is that Borbon was never even the original target. There was a second spitter… over there, on the gravelly path…

                    “It’s a miracle.”

                  • Jp3

Awesome, hopefully when we give them Garza we get better than a never was in return. This theory holds water because Texas released him knowing nobody on the f’n planet would pick him up… In all seriousness this is a ridiculous theory.

Okay TFM I’m serious about being open to reading and discussing your plan. If your plan is a perfect as you suggest there is nothing to ridicule- do you have this much faith in your plan. If the plan is full of holes then yes I will disagree and give you true criticism and you can retort in turn. Refusing to share your opus tells me just how confident you are in this plan. Share it or stop speaking in hypotheticals.

                    • hansman1982

Here’s the flaw in your hypothesis.

You posted, randomly, to an internet website about how you had this amazing plan that you sent to the Cubs FO but they are ignoring you because of some weird conspiracy theory. You offer to share this theory but Brett (the man) doesn’t let you share it on the site (even though there is an entire message board with nearly unlimited space). Then when asked to share the plan, you refuse because we are just big meanies.

15 years ago, you were the internet.

Let me ask you a serious question, do others typically treat you in a similar fashion? Do you find that nearly everyone (except a small portion of the internet and your D&D fanclub) treats you this way?

Did I really just read what I think I read?

          • hansman1982

            Yup…

If that’s the case sign me up for GM. 143-23 (the league expanded to 166 games) is my best record ever and I literally lose top prospects left and right due to languishing in the minors.

            • DarthHater

143-23? And you call yourself a GM??? :-P

              • hansman1982

Well, I did go 162-0 once, but I cheated and set all the players to perfect.

It wasn’t a business model the Cubs FO could handle so I tweaked and tweaked and tweaked until I got a more reasonable record and a business model the Cubs FO could understand.

That and my mommy said it wasn’t nice to cheat.

  • http://Isa Voice of reason

    Imagine that…. No offense!

If it’s not the lack of offense then it’s the defense. If it’s the defense then it’s the manager. If its not the manager…..

Sum it up in three words… THIS TEAM SUCKS.

It’s the worst cub team ever. Last years starring pitching was even better at this time last year when they had dempster (leading in era at this time last year), a healthy garza and maholm. And, the pathetic offense is a carbon copy of last year.

There is no need to make excuses for every loss. It’s simple…. This is the worst cub team ever assembled.

    But, they’re working on it!!

  • http://Www.aorrockstop.com The Full Monty

    They are terrible!!!!!!

And just like the gov. The f.o. Is lying to us

  • Jason P

At least we have 8 games against the Padres and Marlins coming up. Gotta win at least 5…

  • Rebuilding

Given our slow start and the front office’s stated desire to win 65 games if we are only going to win 75 to further the “plan”, at what point do Jed, Theo and all good Cubs fans start to actively root against the team?

    • http://Isa Voice of reason

Don’t root against this team!! For the first time in like 30 years this team is doing things the right way.

They just have to ride out all the bad contracts and let the minor league system develop.

If you were a fan for the last 20 years there is no difference between this year and most other years…. The team sucks!

At least there is a plan being executed. It’s better than the past where they would sign an aging free agent and head into another season with the same old shitty players and everyone would be excited and they would do just what they are doing now…. Sucking!!

If you’ve been a cub fan forever then now is the time to get excited because they are building a team!!!!!!

Jeff Samardzija is only 1-4 on the season, when are they going to send him down and bring in pitchers who throw nothing but shutouts?

Oh and they need to be able to hit as well.

  • http://Www.aorrockstop.com The Full Monty

    Not Jeff’s fault he’s a keeper
    Not really a pitching problem
    Except the closer roll

    We can’t hit!!!!

  • MightyBear

Just goes to show you that W-L records are the worst indicator of a pitcher’s effectiveness.

“You gotta be a helluva pitcher to lose 18 games in this league.” – Casey Stengal

  • http://jjcubs jj

jeff hurts his finger to the point it is bleeding and gutted it out the rest of the way. he has more guts than the rest of team put together.

  • Kyle

Holy ish. I just noticed we’re going to play the next eight games against teams actually worse than us.

I’m going to hold on to the fantasy that we can go like 7-1 against them and get back into a vague sort of competitiveness.

    • Dale’s Ear

Kyle will you just stop being such a negative troll all the time ;)

    • hansman1982

Our offense is bound to do something other than be historically bad at some point.

Then again, our starting pitchers are bound to be something other than amazing at some point.

  • Jeffery D.

With RISP, the Cubs are dead last in MLB in AVG (20/143 : .140), RBIs (29), SLG (.217), and OPS (.471). Second to last only behind the White Sox in both hits (20) and OBP(.254) (silver lining?). And 4th highest in SOs (46).

    Le Sigh…

  • Tom A.

    Here are some random thoughts:

Make an error, you have to wear your hat backwards !

Protect Samardzija for the future — space him out or shut him down so he does not pitch more than 200 innings !

Play and learn about the youth whenever deciding who to play between two players !

Make an error, just walk directly to the bench and sit !

Get Marmol out of here not matter what the cost !!!!!

Move up the trade deadline this season !

Lower the cost of beer and/or give one free beer to every adult fan !

Make an error, you get an E written on your forehead !

  • http://Www.aorrockstop.com The Full Monty

The problem is they are not athletes anymore but investments

  • sossa

You know your team sucks when people are arguing about who should’ve pinch hit in a certain situation.. they are 6-14. It’s not like it was game 7 of the world series or something. Everyone just needs to relax, this rebuild is gonna take time but will be worth it and bring a world series back to the north side!

  • notcubbiewubbie

soriano with another clutch cargo big time at bat with two on one out.oh i forgot he is a great guy in the clubhouse and grt example for the younger guys.paid like albert pujols hits like luis pujols.

He really improved his defense last year, too.

      Lol😀

  • Richp

Just read an article on Foxnews Chicago stating the Southport Neighbors Association of Wrigleyville is demanding the Cubs scale back nearly all plans that they laid out for renovating Wrigley. From the new hotel being too tall, only 33 night games,no closing of traffic lane for street fairs, signage and the list goes on and on. Maybe the Cubs will finally get the message. IT’S TIME TO MOVE!

    • http://401klogic.net Westbound Willie

They should move to another state.

    • Die hard

Issue is who has standing to sue?

    • Kevin

This is playing out exactly as planned. Ricketts is laughing his ass off.

      • Die hard

He won’t if sued or if cost overruns that usually happen make total cost closer to 1 Billion dollars

        • Kevin

Do you seriously think the Cubs will stay at Wrigley? It’s all part of a master plan to show you tried but couldn’t get the neighbors to agree. The Cubs will move and nobody will sue.

OMG the Cubs suck. Fire Dale now and trade all the position players. Didn’t Dale know Sori was going to strike out? Oooh, we suck so hard. I can’t believe the Cubs lost to a team with the best home record in the league and didn’t score any runs besides. Who cares if we lost to the team favored to win the division, the Cubs only gave up one run and there’s no excuse for losing to any team with that kind of pitching. I’m just about ready to give up on this team. Good God they make me so miserable.

    WTF

  • Bob Johnson

I would have hit Barney in the 8th especially since they were giving up the run on contact up the middle. Even worse was Sappelt’s effortless at bat in the 9th.

  • Die hard

I fear that some team will trade for Marmol and convert him to a 20 game winner as a starter

    • TWC

I fear you will lose your internet connection and be converted into a 20-letter a day writer. Stamps ain’t cheap, old man!

      • Die hard

Don’t shoot the messenger — how many games have Cubs lost where scored 6 or more and how many lost where scored less than 6? Now u understand the message

        • TWC

If your contention is that the Cubs need to score more runs than their opposition in order to win games, I’m not sure you’ll find any argument from anyone. (Though I’d actually really like to hear one.)

What really kills me about the last couple of weeks of games is how all these stupid complaints about Sveum’s substitutions would never occur to people if the team was able to score more than, say, one or two runs.

Bad teams play lots of close games. And lose them. Good teams win by lots.

          • Hansman1982

This team is only bad because sale makes dumb substitution mistakes. I mean comeon, if Diehard can see the mistakes, how dumb is Sveum.

        • DarthHater

Yea! How many games have the Cubs lost when they scored 8 or more? None! QED :-P

          • Hansman1982

And how many have they won scoring 0?

            Point proven. Boom.

            • DarthHater

              NEXT! ;-)

  • StillCubsFan

Lets stop picking on Dale’s decisions and start holding the players responsible. It feels like the team just doesnt care. They know that noone expects them to win, so theres no sense of urgency. With the type of salaries ballplayers get paid, they should do all they can to win ballgames. I make 60k/yr and i care about my job.

    • TWC

You’re absolutely correct that the players are responsible for losing. They need to get on base. They really, really suck at that right now.

You’re projecting and/or making stuff up if you think they don’t care. That just smacks of jealousy. They certainly care. They certainly want to win. They’re just not very good at it.
