wrigley field from right bleachersThe Cubs look to take the first two games of the series against the Padres, and, to do it, they’ll need a good performance from Edwin Jackson. The Cubs’ big free agent signing is still looking for his first, start to finish, good start. He’s had some OK ones, but none that you could really put your stamp on.

On the other side, it’s Edinson Volquez, about whom I read somewhere on Twitter that his team is 6-0 in games he’s started against the Cubs. That probably doesn’t really mean much when you think about it.

  • I love marmol

Better not bean Quentin…he’ll knock your socks off

Edwin Jackson SUCCCCKKKKSSS! He’s giving up at least 4 earned in 5 innings of work. Lets hope the offense gets going early.

  • willis

Nah, I think EJax breaks out tonight and dominates. I still have faith this was a solid signing.

  • Seth

I’m not gonna lie, if the Cub’s sweep the Padres this series, I’m gonna start to get optimistic about the season. I don’t know whether that’s good or bad.

    • cubzfan23

Beating the bad teams are what they should do… I for one look at it as a positive. I’ve seen other Cubs teams not do the same.

  • Die hard

Would like to see flip of Castro with Schierholtz

  • Kenster

Couple of ex cubs making some news as Randy Wells retires and Corey Patterson (ya he should retire) signed another minor league deal with Seattle. Both surprising I’d say.
    Anyways lets get another win!!!

  • willis

Dick Enberg on the MLB Network call. That’s pretty awesome. Don’t get to hear him much.

  • Mr.Boring

Two nights in a row no Cubs on Direct TV, what a bunch of low rate organization. Mr. Free Agent, you want to come play for the Cubs?
Mr. Free Agent: No, no game on TV. What a freaking joke.

    • Kenster

As long as you have any cable package you can watch them.. Its on Wciu Channel 10 on Direct Tv.

  • http://bleachernation.com therealPattyP

The Padres are sending thanks to that dumbass Dale Sveum for going into a hokey shift for that punch n judy hitting pile of excrement Mark Kotsay. Hey Dale, ever hear of double play depth. Top of the second is now time for your radical shifts for a guy who can’t hit is weight and doesn’t belong in the bigs any longer

  • RY34

Jackson is just horrible! Great pickup.

    • Dynastyin2017

You may be right. Maybe Jackson has no TWTW. Not kidding. Maybe just once in awhile, he can dig deep and get out of a jam.

All I need is one more ER and my prediction will come true. 4 ER in the first 5 innings. Lets get the bats going.

  • another JP

Saw EJax @ Hohokam this spring and I was totally unimpressed. Shows no desire to excel at all- just a meatbag punching a clock as far as I can tell. And he whines about how there’s more pressure to win here than anywhere else he’s been… what the hell’s he talking about? He hasn’t won a game yet as a Cub, what does he expect?

    • TWC

“Shows no desire to excel at all”

Hawk? Hawk Harrelson, is that you?

    • Jason

I don’t think he was really whining. Someone probably asked him what was different about playing for the Cubs and he gave his honest opinion.

      • another JP

Doesn’t matter if it’s his opinion or not- it’s misguided. This organization hasn’t won a title in forever, it gives him his first long-term contract, so all he needs to do is pitch and keep his pie-hole shut. Practice pick-off throws to first instead of talking about pressure- which shouldn’t be an issue for a veteran pitcher.

  • Jason

If this team is going to even be functional on offense, Sorianos gotta start hitting – especially with men in scoring position.

  • another JP

Twice now that idiot threw the ball away on pick-off attempts. E(rror)Jax is horrible.

  • RY34

Has he had a game yet where he hasn’t made an error

  • Jason

3 things you can’t do with men in scoring position – strike out, weakly pop out, or hit a hard ground ball. Does it not seem like Cubs hitters do one of these 3 things every time?

  • RY34

Take his stupid ass out already dale you dumbass

  • arta

Soriano just watched his pop up fall for a single, should Dale bench him? with hustle he could have gotten a double.

  • another JP

LMAO @ Gascan EJax. $52M waste of a roster spot.

  • willis

Ok, so I take back what I said about Jackson doing shit but sucking tonight. My God he’s awful tonight. As a fan that was excited for his signing, I’m really shocked at how bad he has been.

    • another JP

And just gave up an RBI single to a pitcher that had struck out in 6 of 8 ABs this season. Wow… I thought this guy had more ability than this too.

  • RY34

Geez why take him out now give him a chance to give up ten runs. Hopefully the crowd booed his ass like crazy!

  • Jason

I turned the game off but I just saw Soriano got taken out. Did he get benched for not hustling on the popup or did he injure his shin on that bumbling attempt at a catch near the wall?

  • Rich

E Jax just such an average pitcher
    Flippable ? No way
Has he been at all decent this year ??

    • hardtop

average does not give up 8 runs in 4.2, at home, against really anyone, let alone the padres…. this year he is well below his average, of slightly below average.

  • RY34

He is our new Soriano. Stuck with him for 3 plus years

  • hardtop

8- zip against the padres int he 5th? at home!?!? that’s basically impossible. might as well have a unicorn pitching.

  • another JP

Valbuenabomb. Now there’s a guy earning his salary.

    • hardtop

no…he’s earning ian stewrts salary (and then some). but, unfortunately, he’s getting paid less than half that. ian stewart is the kevin bacon of raw deals 😉

  • Jason

If we went strictly by production this year, our lineup would look something like
    1) Dejesus
    2) ransom
    3) Rizzo
    4) Valbuena
    5) shierholtz
    6) Castillo
    7) Castro
    8) Soriano/Borbon

  • Die hard

Can this be traced to comments of feeling pressure? Maybe he should have had a psych eval before signing him? And this loss can be attributed to not resting Soriano in 4th game on Sunday– he’s pooped

    • hansman1982

Just not enough fire in the belly…

      • Die hard

Needs to gather bench splinters to rekindle that fire

      • Reality Check

let’s see Theo’s last 2 big pitcher signings in Beantown were Lackey and Dice-K………yeah……..Theo does not know FA pitching……..and that’s a bad thing…..now and if/whenever this team is good again.

        • hansman1982

Dice-K gave them 9 WAR before he shit the bed.

  • another JP

Alright Starlin! We’re halfway there to a massive comeback.
