wrigley field from right bleachersThe Cubs lose only heartbreakers these days, and today the Reds go for the sweep. If you’re going to lose anyway, Cubs, just get blown out in the first inning. The late game crap is grating.

Speaking of getting blown out, Edwin Jackson is out to recover from his last outing, in which he was blasted by the Padres, and which he called one of the worst starts of his career. Call me crazy, but I think he’ll be much better this time out.

Headed to the game today…sporting my BN t-shirt, gonna be a great day!!!

  • Die hard

Given Barney’s rally killing lately batting him 9 th is not unreasonable for today’s game

  • deej34

Hey guys, the game is on WGN today for those interested.

  • Idaho Razorback

    Finially a game on WGN!

  • Rich

Oh why do I hate and never liked Edwin Jackson…
    what a 52 million mistake.

  • Eternal Pessimist

Looks like he has almost no movement on his pitches…again.

  • Jp3

Our slugger Barney is up with the sacks full… This won’t end well.

  • Dustin S

Marmol warming up in the pen = time for me to go outside and mow the grass.

    • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

its a chore to watch marmol. Mowing is fun.

  • Jp3

Darth, anyway we could get a GIF of that Branden Phillups dropped pop up to put with Brett’s u mad pic?

  • Eternal Pessimist

Nice catch by Brandon Phillips…how does that not go as an error. Bet we will see a change in the official stats later, but nice to see the guy who considers himself the true gold-glover with a nice miss!

    • Chad

Because he’s a gold glover, haha.

  • ripitrizzo82

marmol tossed a inning without allowing a man on base. its a festivus miracle

  • willis

And Camp pitched the team’s way out of having a chance, again.

    Jesus Christ.

  • RY34

Jesus Christ can any fucking cub in the bullpen ever man up and shut a team down? For the love of Christ this bullpen is such a useless bag of shit!

    • Bric

The bull pen’s been F’d up since Marmol cried his way into the closer’s job.

The real problem is how shaky the younger players (Castro, Rizzo, Barney) are starting to look. Castro especially is starting to look like nothing more than a Cesar Izturis type of guy without the defense. Nothing Special. I’m starting to understand more and more why Baez was drafted. Remember when Hendry called a special press conference a couple of years ago (right about this time of year?) All the rumors were a trade of Zambrano or something huge like that. Nope, it was to announce Castro’s been promoted! WooHoo! Big news!

  • Derek

I guess we were saving Russell for 8th

  • RWakild

It seems like Sveum is trying to lose. First Marmol, then Camp, and now Loe. Can he choose a pitcher that has a chance to not allow a run???

    • Jimmy James

Maybe, if there were any out there…..

  • Eternal Pessimist

Has anyone else noticed that Castillo doesn’t seem to set up the target for the pitcher very well. Loe was 3-0 against one of the reds and Castillo was set off well outside the strike zone. Other times it seems like he takes forever to set up and the pitch is coming at the same time the target is finally there.

    • Chad

That would be a great observation if Castillo was actually catching today. It is Navarro.

      • Eternal pessemist

Thanks. That explains it…now what’s up with navarro?

  • Oswego Chris

I promise I will not be just promoting my book in this post…here are two moves I would like to see the Cubs make, bring up Blake Parker from Iowa, and maybe the Negrin guy for the pen…I really see no reason for Camp and Loe…those guys(Parker and Negrin) are far from prospects but I think it would at least be a nice “see, we know there is a problem in the bullpen” move…

Also bring up Bugusevic for Sappelt….

Sappelt may be out of options, I am not sure…

    • Bric

Dude, Parker’s had so many chances in the past, he’s been on the I-Cubs for at least 6 or 7 years, but I guess he deserved another chance out of sheer tenacity.

Sidenote, congrats on your book publishing. That’s awesome. What’s it called?

      • Oswego Chris

Beyond BARTMAN Curses, and Goats: 104 Reasons Why It’s Been 104 Years…

Parker may really suck, but at least we would see a different guy suck…

        • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

that seems to be a Cubs BP tradition…

        • Bric

Very Cool- A book about the Cubs. I was thinking something different. I remember a poster (Cheryl?) mentioning writing a spy novel or something a while back so I didn’t get the connection. But anyway, again congratulations on the book.

  • RY34

Where the hell is Russell? Great decisions once again Dale! 9 wins in a row at wrigley for the reds comin up.

    • Chad

This is the dumbest comment about the bullpen ever. Russell can not pitch 4 innings in every day. I know he is the cub’s best reliever and yes I think he deserves to be pitching, but from yesterday’s comments Russell should have pitched the 6th instead of Marmol, the 7th instead of Camp, and the 8th instead of Loe. Yeah in hindsight that’s great, but Russell cant’ pitch every relief inning and not even every other day (Shawn Camp’s arm says hello). People that blame Sveum for the crappy bullpen are just dumb.

      • Oswego Chris

It is hard to make chicken salad out of chicken sh&t…I imagine it is hard to make anything out of chicken sh&t actually…

      • RY34

That would be awesome to see about Russell!

      • Bric

Yeah, the Russell starter’s experiment was a mistake from day 1.

  • Chad

We will not see Marmol, Camp, Loe or Gregg coming out of the cub’s pen next year. We will see some young guys hopefully pitching better, but at least we won’t see the same crappy washed up guys and waiver wire pick ups. There should be big turnover in the pen next year.

    • Oswego Chris

I think you will see most of them changed within a month or two…Gregg may prove to be flippable

      • Chad

I hope you are right, but I kind of doubt it, and I don’t think Gregg is very flappable. He’s been around and people know what he is. he looks ok with the cubs right now, but that doesn’t make him worth much as he is a very well known commodity, and I doubt he is an upgrade for any contenders.

        • Oswego Chris

You are probably right on Gregg…out of all of the scrap heap pickups…Ransom,Borbon,Loe…he might…might fetch us a player

  • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

Reading this post, got me sad, what ifs:http://sports.yahoo.com/news/the-ray-way–emerging-pitcher-matt-moore-taking-his-cues-from-staff-star-david-price-192732939.html

Just think the Rays have lots of talent, low money, and we whine about both – a lack of talent and too much money..

Oh we have another 9 inning blue ball going on.

    • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

tease over. Seagulls are picking the Cubs carcass after what should have been a 2 out of 3 series take, instead: the sweep for the Reds. ugh.

  • 70’scub

Cubs need a president like the Bosox had when Theo was the GM. Jeb are you kidding me is this what you call a bullpen?

  • cubfanincardinalland

The situational hitting is just absurd. First and third, no out, 2-3-4 hitters, three straight cans of corn. Team now hitting under .180 with runners in scoring position. After 31 games, almost impossible to do. Could have the Tennesee Smokies lineup playing, they would hit better than .180 with runners in scoring position. You look at the bullpen the Reds run out there, vs. the Cubs. It’s just not the same level of baseball. Big league vs. minor league.
I am utterly discouraged after watching today, a team in free fall. Total lack of confidence. What exactly is the plan?

    • Chad

Agree 100%. Not only is there a talent deficit, but the cub’s situational hitting and just plain baseball IQ tends to be much lower. That is a very bad combination. Castro is the worst at this IMO.
