Series Preview: Cubs v. Nationals, May 10 – May 12, 2013

montreal expos logoOff to the nation’s capital to take on the Expos …

By way of reminder, the Series Preview hooks you up with what you need to know about every series this year – streaks, broadcast information, pitchers, expected lineups, etc. That way, if you want to check only one place to get a sense about an upcoming series, or to plan ahead, you’ve got it. There’s also some fun stuff, because fun stuff is fun.

We’re Going Streaking

The Cubs split their two-game set with the Cardinals after being swept by the Reds. At 13-21, the Cubs are already 8.5 out in the NL Central.

The Nats have won four in a row and six of seven after a slow start. They remain, to my eye, one of the best two or three teams in the National League.

Game Times and Broadcasts

  • Saturday, May 11 at 3:05 CT on CSN.
  • Sunday, May 12 at 12:05 CT on WGN.

Expected Starters and Lineups

These lineups are likely to be pretty close to what actually gets fielded, but you’ll want to check each day’s Pre-Gamin’ post for the actual lineup.

Cubs

Starters: Jeff Samardzija (1-4, 3.09), Edwin Jackson (0-5, 6.39), Scott Feldman (3-3, 2.70)

Lineup:

  1. David DeJesus, CF
  2. Starlin Castro, SS
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Alfonso Soriano, LF
  5. Nate Schierholtz, RF
  6. Welington Castillo/Dioner Navarro, C
  7. Luis Valbuena, 3B
  8. Darwin Barney, 2B
  9. Pitcher

Nationals

Starters: Ross Detwiler (1-3, 2.50), Stephen Strasburg (1-4, 3.45), Gio Gonzalez (3-2, 4.97)

Lineup:

  1. Denard Span, CF
  2. Ian Desmond, SS
  3. Bryce Harper, RF
  4. Ryan Zimmerman, 3B
  5. Adam LaRoche, 1B
  6. Jayson Werth/Roger Bernadina, LF
  7. Danny Espinosa, 2B
  8. Kurt Suzuki, C
  9. Pitcher

Hot or Not and Whom to Watch

Starlin Castro is very, very cold. His line over his last 20 games will frighten you, to the extent you can be frightened by a 20-game sample: .238/.264/.298.

Darwin Barney is 0 for his last 21. He got a couple days off to clear his head, and hopefully he’ll come back ready to go.

We’re still waiting on Kevin Gregg to give up a run. It’ll happen eventually, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Bryce Harper is 20 years old. And he has a 1.013 OPS. I am turning green from a mix of envy and anger.

At least Stephen Strasburg “only” has a 109 ERA+.

The Cubs won’t face him, but I thought you’d be interested in Dan Haren’s line so far: 5.17 ERA, 1.487 WHIP. Good K/BB ratio, though.

Series She-View

The Series She-View is one beautiful woman representing the Cubs taking on another (usually) beautiful woman representing the opponent. The Cubs’ representative will change as the team’s needs change – in other words, if the Cubs are winning, the rep will stay the same. But if the Cubs’ performance calls for a change, someone new will step in. The opponent’s representative will change from series to series, at my whim. But at least she’ll probably be wearing the opponent’s colors or have some connection to the team or something like that. It is immature, and the connection to baseball is tenuous at best. These things, I know.

This year, the Series She-View will live over at the Message Board. Here’s your She-View for the Nats series.

Caption the Enemy

A new feature for the Series Preview this year – since folks on the Internet can’t get enough of cracking wise about pictures, I thought it might be a fun addition to the Series Preview. I’ll drop in a picture (hopefully one ripe for captioning), and you’ll drop in your clever captions into the comments. Then, if there are good ones, we can meme-ify them for use down the road.

This one is a little different, since the main focal point of the caption is none other than Tony Campana. We may have already done this with this picture, but I love it so much that I can’t help myself. It’s from that Cubs/Nats fight last year:

I had tickets for Friday, but I have to attend graduation, damn responsibility. Yet, I will be there Saturday, behind the 3rd base dugout. I heard there is a spot in the outfield to grab a beer and hang out..if anyone wants to say hi and have a quick beer. peace~

“Hey, I ain’t afraid of you, pal. Mostly just because I can run away really fast. But still.”

I will be at the game tonight. Its interesting to see Sveum keeping some lefties in the lineup tonight against Detwiler.

This is the series preview, not tonites lineup. The line will be a little different, I supspect.

      1. KidCubbie

Yeah i didnt really think about that. Thanks. It would be interesting to see if he gives Schierholtz some at bats vs. a lefty though, considering Hairstons struggles.

    Fujikawa officially activated

Actually, I take that back. Mistake on my part

  8. cubmig

That Nationals logo = a nostalgic Expo recycled one. A quick glance fools the eye.

I think Castro should be dropped. 6 hole. He just doesn’t get on base enough, and he’s not helping the team at the 2 spot. Frankly I’d rather see Valbuena there (who ever thought they would say that?)

  10. Chris

Going to the game tonight. Hopefully we get some good cubbies support in the stands and a big fat W.

Love the picture. Did the Nats rotation get bumped at all? I thought we were in for Shark v Strasburg today.

“Apparently little Tony’s hands are even faster than his legs. Big Adam never saw it comin.’”
