carlos zambrano marlinsRemember when Carlos Zambrano signed with the independent Long Island Ducks? Well, it turns out that he only kinda-sorta signed with them, but never actually showed up. Danny Knobler reported yesterday that Zambrano had agreed to terms with Long Island, but hadn’t signed a contract.

Why the wait on finalizing things? Well, it could be because some big league teams still had interest, and reports out of Venezuela this morning say that Zambrano has indeed signed with the Philadelphia Phillies.

If true, that would be swell for no other reason than it preserves the possibility of getting to see Zambrano face the Cubs this year. How could anyone be against that? Sure, it’s not quite the lulz that we would have gotten from the Cubs signing Zambrano to pitch out of the pen, but it’s a close second.

UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal jumps in, and says it’s a minor league deal, which was to be expected. Zambrano will work on his arm strength a bit, and perhaps even hone his skills as a reliever in the minors. I’d imagine there’s a modest expectation that he will make the Phillies at some point this year. We can all hope, anyway.

I can see it now, Amaro Jr.’s phone is ringing and Hendry is on the phone inquiring what it will take from the farm system to acquire him!

FWIW, and following the theme of former Cub pitchers signing with independent minor league teams, Hayden Simpson recently signed with the Southern Illinois Miners.

I’m guessing towel drills will be in order?

I hear there’s a nifty new training device that has a gatorade dispenser attached to a baseball bat…

Heard they sighed Michael Barrett to be his personal catcher and motivational coach

      And Gatorade demolition.

Nothing to lose with this deal. If Phillies turn it around he stays, Phillies continue to blow they release or flip him. Cheaper than Baker…

Speaking of the Phillies, I thought diehard assured us weeks ago that Charlie Manuel was going to be replaced as manager by Sandberg at any minute. 😛

He also assured us that Nick Struck would make the staff out of spring, and become a star because of his bellyfire.

It’s kinda like the old saying about enough typing chimpanzees eventually writing Hamlet. If you make enough outrageous predictions, eventually one of them might actually happen.

The MLB market for over-the-hill players has really dried up ever since Jim Hendry was fired…
