It was quite clear tonight that Matt Garza had great stuff in his return to the rotation after 10 months in injury-induced banishment – he didn’t give up a hit until the 5th inning, and it was a poke blooper by Clint Barmes. What he didn’t have was perfect command of his pitches, which you would expect in his first start in such a long time. Don’t read that as a knock on his start, because I don’t mean it that way. I mean only that he went deep into counts with a lot of hitters, and ran up his pitch count early. You’d have liked to have seen him go deeper into the game, but, all in all, you just can’t complain about that start.

And thus ended the meaningful portion of the game.

From there, the bullpen conspired to blow the game in favor of the Pirates, and, on the flip side, you ain’t coming back on the Pirates’ bullpen this year (though the Cubs did make sure to do their teaser rally in the 9th, scoring on Jason Grilli and leaving the tying run at third).

Darwin Barney had a ridiculously awesome night, by the way. So I guess he and Garza are the story, even though everyone will focus on the loss and this …

Disgusting but good to see Garza looking good

  • cjdubbya

    #Cubes trade with #Barves?

  • Nick

Still upset about today’s game but We did see some good things for the future

  • Zogie

The cubs need to stop relying on their pitchers for offense. Garza did everything he could to allow the cubs to win today. 5 solid innings with a 2-run double. Camp should be the last guy going out there in clutch situations. Villanueva should have been the guy. The bullpen ended up allowing the pirates to get back in it and the cubs offense has struggled the past few games. Rizzo seemed to hit a wall. He was not even close to that slider by Grilli at the end and an 0-5 day. At least Barney raised his average with his 4-4 performance. My shout out goes to Matt Garza. Welcome back! Now hopefully we can welcome the cubs offense back tomorrow.

  • Rsquared

Well…that sucked! Lets have a Dale sale!!!!!

  • MichiganGoat

    Oh and YEAH bullpen… smh

  • @cubsfantroy

    Barney 4-4? Holy SH*T!

  • ssckelley

First time I have ever really questioned one of the FO’s move, but DFA Bowden instead of Camp has me confused. How many more hanging sliders does Camp need to throw until they figure out he doesn’t have it?

  • MichiganGoat

Keep hunting the wavier wire Camp has got to go… time for a Stewartesque DL stint? – too soon???

  • bob

Unbelievable that the rules give Rondon a “Hold” for blowing the game, and Russell gets a Loss for facing one batter. That’s why you can’t rely on most Pitcher stats.

    • bob

I’d rather have seen Marmol start the 6th. That says it all about our relief.

    • Rcleven

Still can’t come in and walk the hitter in that situation. He deserved what he got.

  • Die hard

Don’t be surprised if Garza misses next start- he’s fragile and one sneeze away from DL

    • MichiganGoat

Debbie Downer to the rescue everyone… keep
      The great post coming buddy

    • PeteG

Stupid.ass.comment…are you a cardinal or sox fan by chance?

    • Carew

Dumbest comment in quite some time

      • Blublud

Honestly it’s a pretty funny comment considering the circumstances. I think it’s more the commenter then the comment.

  • Deacon

Definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect different results. So who`s more at fault — Camp for proving he doesn’t have it as he’s shown all year? Or Thed for keeping him on the roster and Sveum for using him when the game was on the line?

    • willis

      Sveum.

      • Rcleven

Sveum is just using the tools in his box. Sveum can’t help his tools are broken. Keeping Camp still has me shaking my head. This whole pen is just garbage. We just don’t have the starters that can go nine.

        • willis

No excuse for him not to go with this best available pitchers. He didn’t. End of story. Terrible. Manager.

        • arta

Rcleven, how often do u think he would let a pitcher pitching a good game go 9?

          • Rcleven

Three times so far this year. Only 1 complete game.

    • Falselife

      Insanity:
      1. The state of being mentally ill; madness.
      2. Extreme foolishness or irrationality.

That’s the definition of insanity, and the current state of our team and fans.

    • arta

      ditto on Sveum

  • spearman

I’m ready for the draft, then Football! Yeah Roll Tide!
I’ve got something to cheer about.

  • willis

Sveum, again. Someone give me a reason, any reason to have hope with this guy? Tell me why, with Garza at 82 pitches, and 5 innings in, and a 3-0 lead…you don’t go with Villanueva? Sure he’s struggled a little lately, but he’s a better option than about anyone down there now.

    • koyiehillsucks2

camp was the worst choice to go with in that siuation, but it never should of come to that. Villanueva should have pitched the 6th and 7th.

  • HoustonTransplant

So what was the reason for not bringing Villanueva in after Garza? Isn’t he the “swing man/long relief?” Seems right after Garza’s start would be a great time to use that arm that you just plopped in the pen. Unless I’m drastically missing something. Did he pitch a few innings yesterday during their off da—oh. Never mind.

    • MichiganGoat

Obviously Camp is the better choice obviously

      • HoustonTransplant

        Obvious goat is obvious.

        • MichiganGoat

          Drunk goat is more obvious

      • Kramden

Camp was definitely the choice and will continue to be if the goal is the 2013 #1 draft choice.

    • willis

There is no reason. It cannot be explained.

      • Rsquared

It’s easily explained! Theo, Jed, and Dale are on the Goats payroll.

        • Rcleven

          Goat only pays in beer.
          Now that explains it.

          • MichiganGoat

I don’t pay beer for anything in this bullpen

  • http://Bleachernation.com Ramy16

San Diego is giving the Cardinals all they can handle

  • http://Bleachernation.com Ramy16

Padres definitely one of the hotter teams in baseball and doing it with pitching and defense

  • Tim

    Gregg looked great as always!
    Still confused about it

    • MichiganGoat

Isn’t that just a confusing pill to swallow- YEAH GREGG!

    • PeteG

When I thought of Gregg I thought of mark Guthrie. Now I think Mariano Riviera. Wtf? Haha

  • http://Bleachernation.com Ramy16

The point I am making is there is no way in hell the Padres are better than the Cubs…mi agree with you guys Dale Svuem sucks as a Mngr!!.. Let’s petition for Sandberg or give the Phillies a draft pick for him

  • Mike

I would have also highlighted Rondon’s line

  • mudge

bring moreland down from the booth to manage. two birds.

    • Drew7

      :Shudders:

  • JoeyCollins

Don’t care about the Bowden DFA, but why is Camp still on the team? There are at least 2 or 3 guys at AAA that could do a better job than Camp. Would also like to see Rondon get the rule 5 DL for a while. Think he would be better served at AAA than getting blasted over .1 innings here.

  • Ben

Still don’t know why Camp is here. Frustrating. Oh well. Garza was as good as can be expected. Between him and Feldman, we should get a decent haul by the deadline.

  • Blublud

I’m really losing faith in Sveum. The guy just doesn’t seem to have a clue. He is over thinking situations. Go with Rondon when garza could have still faced another 2 batters, at least. Then you go to Russell for 1 batter. This guy is no a LOOGy. He is a true reliever who can face lefties and righties. He should have stayed in. Sveum is playing to many matchup games and on top of that, he is getting it wrong too often. I really do not see a future for him pass this year in a Cubs uniform.

    • Kenster

I agree! Amen! I hate most of his stupid situational moves especially this one. Russell can face lefties and righties and is the best reliever on the team. Why waste him that early on one batter? We just had an off day let him finish the inning. Idk what was worse tho taking Russell out in that spot or putting Camp in… Oh god 2014 hurry up

    • hansman1982

Wow, honestly, I don’t think you say much that I agree with, like, ever.

Garza was at 80 pitches. Considering this is his first MLB start after 10 months of being out due to injury, best to take it easy and he was either at or above a pre-set pre-game limit.

“Sveum is playing to many matchup games and on top of that, he is getting it wrong too often.”

Well, Russell did commit the Reliever Cardinal Sin #1: Walked the first batter faced with the bases loaded. Also, his offensive “matchups” (read platoons) seem to be working fairly well this year.

    • Rcleven

Garza was done period. Man pitched 4 games since early spring. Way too risky go any further. Scouts in the park saw what he could do and that is all that matters. He threw well and hope like heck he feels good for his next start. Do it again next time and build value till the trade deadline. A hurt Garza is worthless.

  • Dustin S

Honestly, although it’s a ways off yet I’ll be glad when the trade deadline gets here. I’m not crazy about this limbo of maybe we’ll go for it or maybe we’ll intentionally tank. I’d rather know we were doing one or the other.

Great start by Garza. He nibbled a little bit too much on the corners, but other than that it couldn’t have been better. Quite a few comments by Deshaies during the game about more scouts than usual being there tonight too.

  • Jp3

Ummm, when can we stop pretending the sample size is too small to bench Hairston even vs lefties???? I’ve seen all I need to see, he K’s more than Baez. .122/.155 slash line. We’re a quarter the way through with the season and he’s absolutely terrible.

    • Rcleven

      Danny Knobler ‏@DannyKnoblerCBS 11m

One rival scout on Matt Garza Tuesday: “I’d take him NOW” http://cbsprt.co/10SSy7Q

      • Rcleven

How did it end up here?

        • Jp3

          Space in time

        • hansman1982

          Magic…

          • Jp3

Haha, beat you to it handsman

  • Jp3

And the bullpen sucked too… That was obviously obvious😉

  • PeteG

Screw it bring back cliff bartosh or David Patton. DFA Camp. Ohh yeah I just brought back some old names

  • http://Bleachernation.com Ramy16

Lol @mudge! So far all of our pickups have been duds..I see Hairston is now at .118 with 2 Hrs..I still think Borbon can be better than De Jesus with more playing time did you guys see the catch he made? I don’t think that De Jesus makes that catch…I think once again Borbon needs more at bats

    • Kenster

Ya Hairston has been a dud. But how can you say all of them are duds? Let me list them… Schierholtz, Villanueva, Feldman, Valbuena, Gregg, Dejesus, Sweeney and Borbon so far. Can’t forget Travis Wood either. You win some you lose some cant be perfect. But yes Hairston has been awful

  • another JP

Must say I’m happy for Garza and not because of the loss but because he had a successful return after 10 months. On a day that we should be celebrating his performance we’re back to lamenting more bad decisions by the manager. What’s truly annoying is these devastating losses only happen to us at a time when we’re showing promise as a ball club. If Theo and Jed are as astute at judging talent as I think they are I can’t believe they’ll continue to accept losses like this without being critical at some point. Sveum’s veiled threat to Castro and Rizzo earlier about everyone being accountable should especially apply to himself.
