albert almoraHopefully this proves to be one of those things where it was much ado about nothing.

A little while ago, my @ stream on Twitter blew up with the same message from a dozen people (who were presumably at today’s Kane County game): Albert Almora just left the game in the third inning after appearing to injure his left leg in the outfield. The eyewitness descriptions of the injury were basically the same, involving Almora misreading a ball, trying to change directions, and appearing to tweak his leg/knee in the process. He stayed in the game for a little bit, but left soon thereafter with a limp. He appeared angry about having to leave the game (presumably, he was angry about the injury).

Obviously we’re way early in the game here, as guys tweak things and leave games all the time without any serious, long-term ramifications. Given Almora’s hot start, his time missed with broken hamate bone, and his stature in the Cubs’ organization (he’s a consensus top three prospect), some extra attention/nervousness when he leaves a game is understandable.

But try to keep it together until we hear something firm from the Cubs. Hopefully it’s just a little ouchy and the Cougars were being abundantly cautious with Almora.

UPDATE: You folks are awesome. A new set of @ updates from folks on the ground there at the game say that Almora has returned to the dugout and appears to be walking around all right. Obviously that doesn’t rule out a serious injury, but it isn’t a bad sign. Fingers remain crossed.

It never ends. Why is something telling me the news on this injury will keep getting worse.

  • @cubsfantroy

So, no September call up for Almora?

    • fromthemitten

that wasn’t going to happen in the first place. he’s not ready to hit MLB pitching

        *sarcasm font*

  • Jp3

False. This story can’t be true. AA is incapable from everything I’ve read of misjudging a fly ball.

    • cms0101

Lol. it was a line drive right in his direction. Two steps forward and then he hurt himself trying to turn around.

  • nkniacc13

I hope its nothing big. I was kinda hopping to see him when they came to cedar rapids

  • Stevie B

I just tweaked my knee jumping on trampoline with my kids.
    I’m ok….nothing serious.

  • Die hard

How did he stay in shape while recovering? Hopefully he worked out with team to extent didn’t jeopardize injury!! If not who’s in charge here?

  • Jono

Hoyer says early reports on Almora are that it’s a hamstring injury, but Cubs will update us when we get official word.

From the Mayo Clinic, RE: hamstring injuries http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hamstring-injury/DS01183

“Self-care measures such as rest, ice and over-the-counter pain medications are often all you need to relieve the pain and swelling associated with a hamstring injury. Rarely, surgery may be needed to repair a torn muscle.”

Your obsession with Castro’s weight is more entertaining.

You should have a subtitle below your posting name “Prognosticator of everything, expert on nothing”

Was at the game today and what I briefly saw of Almora I liked, off the field. Until he got hurt he was sitting at the top of the dugout every time the Cougars batted, cheering his teammates on, he was the first to greet whoever scored their first early run and during the pre-game autograph session he was taking pictures with every single person. He just seemed really jacked to be there and that all of these people knew who he was.

    • Die hard

That explains the injury– overworked it being nice

      • Jp3

I tell you Die Hard who wouldn’t injure himself like that would’ve been Barry Bonds, that dude hated everyone

  • Mike

Can’t get a number one to always work out. I know it’s very, very early, but I have a bad feeling that Almora is all talent, yet all injury. I just don’t see him making it to the majors. But, hey, there is Rock Shoulders and Dan Vogelbach and Jorge Soler to look forward to in the hitting department.

    • Mike

Has he really been ofted injured? I don’t really think you can count the hamate against, him, that’s kind of just a freak occurrence.

  • chirogerg

From all the reports, there is something missing……did he catch the ball?
