dusty baker classyAlthough I imagine the tone of his response was somewhat friendly, if not joke-y, Reds manager Dusty Baker had a surprising response to Matt Garza’s comments about Johnny Cueto throwing over David DeJesus’s head yesterday.

“You got something to say, you go over there and tell him,” Baker told Reds beat writer Mark Sheldon. “Johnny ain’t running. Know what I mean? A guy can say what he wants to say, but it’s better if you go over and say it to his face.”

“I just wish, just put them in a room, let them box and let it be over with, know what I mean?” Baker continued. “I always said this. Let it be like hockey. Let them fight, somebody hits the ground and then it’ll be over with. I’m serious about that. I come from a different school. Guys didn’t talk as much. You just did it.”

I have a strong suspicion that, were the stakes high enough, Garza would have no problem saying any of this to Cueto’s face or “just doing it,” as it were.

Baker is sticking up for his guy, as you’d expect any manager to do, but this is a bit much. Garza had a good point, as Cueto’s decision to throw over the head of DeJesus – because DeJesus stepped out of the box too much? – was ridiculous. On the other hand, the throw was way over DeJesus’s head, and probably didn’t put him in terrible danger.

It’s a lot of talk, and we’ll see what comes out of it when the teams face each other again in a couple weeks.

For the record, each of Garza and Cueto are officially listed at 215 pounds, but Garza has about five inches on Cueto at 6’4″ versus 5’11”. My money’s on Garza.

That fight would be more entertaining than 80% of the Cubs games this year….

  • Rich H

Why do I feel my inner Tyler Durden coming out ?

    • cjdubbya

      His name…was Johnny Cueto.

  • Patrick W.

They sort of have an Alien (Garza) vs. Predator (Cueto) look about them.

  • Cedlandrum

As long as Cueto can’t kick Garza in the head with a cheap shot Garza should be o.k.

  • nkniacc13

Ought to make the Reds Cubs series pretty interesting in early June

  • Die hard

Honor Crusty Dustys service today as a Marine by respecting his view– but tomorrow….

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Thompsonville, Il_Cubs

Yea Garza isn’t running either, fuck the reds and cueto

  • Patrick G

That match is more likely than a Mayweather/Pacquio fight

  • RY34

Nobody has ever mistaken Dusty for a genious! Would the cubs know what to do in a brawl?

    • DocPeterWimsey

      Or a moran……

      (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

  • Die hard

Maybe we can get Farnsworth back before play them again

  • JulioZuleta

A June fight would be appropriate. June (19th) 2013 marks the 10 year anniversary of a Cubs pitcher kicking the ass of a Reds pitcher…the Kyle Farnsworth/Paul Wilson beatdown.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Nicely done.

    • Die hard

I’ll let you have the credit tho idea was mine by 4 minutes 😀

  • sleepy

If tough talking Dusty has something to say to or about Garza, why is he bing a chicken-shit? Go tell him to his face.

  • A_Mazz_Ing

    Someone book Don King.

  • dying cubs fan’s last request

Garza would whip Cueto’s ass so hard he would have to go in a 60 day DL stint.

  • another JP

Typical Dust-bag rhetoric… the guy is a mental midget and always spouts off without thinking about what he’s saying. Same tool that referred to walks as clogging up the bases and said that black athletes were better suited for playing in the heat. Cincy must be proud of him.

  • Jeremy

I actually love that comment from Baker. Leave it all out on the field and be done with it.

  • hawkcub

“I come from a different school. Guys didn’t talk as much. You just did it.”

Yet Dusty is yapping his mouth.

  • Frank

Bakers had a hard on ever since the Cubs dumped him. He had no reason to join the conversation except to cry about the Cubs. I’m also old school and if Cueto comes up to bat sail one over his head, except make it closer to send a message. If he retaliates, he get kicked out of the game. Win Win

Dusty should give the same advice to his own pitcher, who has been ducking the media since yesterday’s game.

  • chrisfchi

Let’s do it. Bleacher Nation Friday night pitcher fights. Think of all the pay-per-view revenue the site could pull in!

  • bea arthur’s husband

Good to see Dusty remains as big an idiot as he was back in his Chicago days. Even if they win, Cincy can have him. It’s not like the guy can actually win a World Series days.

    Is Darren playing yet?

    • bea arthur’s husband

I feel like he would feel differently if it was his kid getting thrown it by a whackjob like Cueto.

  • The Dude

This is an awesome storyline. Gonna be a great series in a couple weeks!

  • caryatid62

I don’t think there’s a single person in baseball I dislike more than Dusty Baker. I loathe him.

To quote last night’s Mad Men:

“Your activities are offensive to my every waking moment; I’m sorry, but you’ll always be the enemy.”

    • Cheryl

Yep. Dusty has a lot to answer for in the way he handled pitchers. Cueto may get a message from the cubs and he’d deserve it.

      • Crazyhorse

Careful ….. Cueto throws a wicked 100 mph fastball and is a nasty drunk without the ETOH in his body.. This man Child is no weakling and i fear that he is the type of person that Would throw at Rizzo head with pinpoint eyebrow accurancy.

What Baker said was wrong but atleast he was defending his picher. Garza need to redirect his fustration towards his own players . Garza overstepped and then Baker overstepped. In degrees of losing. over a silly wild pitch that did not deserve the attention it got, Big fail on Garza part.

        • Caryatid62

So Dusty was “defending his pitcher,” but you’re suggesting Garza rip his teammates. That makes sense.

  • Crazyhorse

In a fight my money is on Cueto. I have a feeling that one punch will knockout the whole Cubs pitching staff they are a fragile bunch .
Gotta laugh at Garza with a little puke. What Cueto did was a shrugg at most . The man-child Cueto threw a 100 mph fastball down the middle 2 feet above the strike zone.

Garza being absent for 3/4 of a season dating to to last seaon with a mild strain has cheated this Cubs team . Garza fustration should be with his own team including the soft spoken Sveum. The Cubs lack of NoN -pitching hitting is the main reason he should throw a verbal tantrum towards the Cub players .

THe Cubs are in dead last place and it not the fans fault nor the opposing team. Its the person who assembled this team. The Cubs Starting pitching staff has done a wonderful Job without Garza . Hopefully it will continue to do so with him playing,

  • Charlie

Cueto could win in a kicking/slapping contest because he’s a little beeyotch!

Cut Garza a break…….prior to last year, he was pretty durable. He had a lot of leads blown for him, too.

  • http://www.1000caloriesaday.com Frank

If anyones going to the game when Cueto’s pitching, try to start a chant when he comes up to bat of “Duck Johnny Duck”.

  • LWeb23

Don’t write off Johnny Cueto, he’s got a nice kick. Ask Jason LaRue.

  • PiattCountyGuy

    Dusty….Dusty….Dusty….once a pudwhack, always a pudwhack

  • Bric

Dusty Baker reminds me of the old Chris Rock “Nat X” skits from Saturday Night Live.
“Why is my show only 15 minutes long?… ‘Cause the man won’t give me a half hour!”
“Why are the green olives in the jar but the black olives are in the can?”
“Why is Garza talking about it instead of just doing it?!…”
If Chris Rock wanted to go back to SNL I bet he could do a hilarious Dusty Baker.

  • arealpoy

Such BS. Nobody in baseball fights for a reason. They’re not tough.
