Quantcast

angels stadiumThere must be something in the West Coast water, because Dale Sveum has changed things up once again in his lineup. With Starlin Castro already bumped down the order, now he’s bumping Darwin Barney up – way up. Barney is leading off against the lefty Jason Vargas, which, given the other options, doesn’t really bother me as much as you might think.

Matt Garza’s return tour continues. Hopefully he has as much success as Scott Feldman had last night.

and the give away game of the week is this one with this lineup… haha

    • wvcubsfan

Not really sure what line up would work much better

  • Josh Kirby

Maybe a trade value thing? I’m sure it’s easier to sell a lead off, gold glove 2nd baseman than a gold glover hitting in the 8 slot.

    • corey costello

      Lol at trading Barney.

  • Featherstone

When was the last time we batted two catchers in the lineup?

    • cooter

just guessing, but probably Barret and Blanco. They both were descent.

    • UCF

A week ago against the White Sox

  • http://www.dccoffeeproducts.com John

1984 Keith Moreland and Jody Davis?? Moreland came up as a catcher and moved to the outfield.

  • Ralph

What are the odds that Garza buzzes the light tower on Pujols after he admired that 2-run shot last night???

    • willis

God willing they are high and it happens. That would at least make this game somewhat interesting. With this lineup, that’s about all that will.

  • HawkClone

Just got 2 free tickets behind home plate for tonight’s game at work! It really pays to be the only Cubs fan out here.

    • CM

That’s called dealing with Angels fans and their apathy. I’ve gotten tickets to both games free as well and both nights great seats.

    • Tjtrigo

Agreed. I went last night and had great seats, too.

  • Drew7

I don’t know which is more vomit-inducing – Barney leading off, or the fact that there isn’t an obvious alternative.

    • DarthHater

Barney’s bellyfire will prove you wrong. … Or maybe that bellyfire’s just more vomit… :-P

      • demz

        TWTW

  • Jono

This has nothing to do with the Cubs, but I now have Strasburg, Price, Cueto, Street, and Kemp my fantasy DL. I just needed to vent that out. The draft couldn’t have come at a better time. It’ll be a nice pick-me-up

    • Cyranojoe

      Holy moly dude. Nice.

  • Die hard

Sveum grasping at last straws now

  • Jono

Imagining this team without soriano, garza, and Feldman, can they challenge houston and Miami for the top draft pick next year? I expect them to finish below the brewers and seatle

  • fromthemitten

I would be much happier seeing Welly get a day off and Navarro DH if Sveum is going to hit both of them in the lineup. Not a knock of Welly’s defense just wanna keep him fresh.

  • @cubsfantroy

Should have Castro leading off. /Die hard

    • Die hard

Yea but Sveum still using training wheels

  • mudge

Wouldn’t you bat Sweeney first here?

    • fromthemitten

Lefty on Lefty violence… no thanks

  • Kyle

Good thing lineups don’t matter that much, because Dale forgot how to baseball.

  • http://bleachernation.com therealPattyP

Barney leading off is a fireable offense imo.

    • mudge

      It’s no offense at all.

      • Drew7

        Ba-zing!

  • Cooper

At the game. Looking at our lineup is a good indication that our roster is not constructed for the AL game…

  • Mark S

You can take it off the board…..YES!

  • Cyranojoe

    What happened??

  • Rebuilding

I find it amazing that both Appel and Bryant are ok being represented by Boras. Yes, he is the best in the business, but what a conflict. What happens when the Astros come to him and say we really like Appel, but if Bryant will take a million less we’ll take him. How as an advisor can you possibly be looking out for the best interests of both guys.

    • MichiganGoat

He knows what he is doing and I’m sure he’s done this before. My guess is he would say both will require the full slot at a minimum. He’s not doing anyone a service by saying “Yes Bryant will take a cut just to be the number one pick” it wouldn’t look good to future clients. If you draft a Boras client at one or two the full slot is necessay and possibly a little bit over that.

      • Rebuilding

Maybe, but either if those guys would get more money taking less than slot, but going #1 instead of #2. And yes I know he’s done it before, but that doesn’t make it a better situation. Ultimately he’s advocating for two different parties that have competing and divergent interests – it’s an inherent conflict of interest

        • Rebuilding

Just as an example of the absurdity of the situation: Lets say the Astros call and say hey Scott if Bryant or Appel want to go #1 they’ll have to go under slot otherwise we’ll take Moran. He calls Bryant’s people and they say we’ll go $500k under and then he calls Appel’s people and they say start at $300k but might go lower. Well he knows Bryant’s at $500k. Does he tell Appel that? And if he does and Appel says oh ok I’ll go $600k under. Does he call Bryant back? And so on. He will literally be negotiating against himself. It’s absurd

          • MichiganGoat

I see what you thinking about with the new CBA there is a different strategy, but if the Astros want someone to sign at like slot 4/5 dollars why would he allow or advise them to sign for anything less than the 2nd slot pay level. He frequently has multiple draft picks and FA that can compete against each other. He knows exactly what he is doing and will get the highest price he can get for his players.

            • Rebuilding

Well, you point out the conflict with Boras himself. Why would he do that? Because he stands to make far more money with the #1 and #2 guys rather than #2 and #3 even if 1 and 2 are way under slot. Throw in a wildcard that its possible that if one or the other of them doesn’t go number 1 they slide to 3-5. That’s a lot of change.

My only point is that he’s playing with two hands at a poker table. Does he bluff with one and not the other? He can see both hands

              • MichiganGoat

As much as we might all hate Boras – he knows exactly what he is doing. If he wants to play two hands at the same time I’m sure he’ll find a way to win both hands. He hasn’t gotten this far by not understanding what he is doing and thinking through ever possible scenario.

                • Kyle

I don’t hate Boras at all. He’s simply very good at his job.

                  • MichiganGoat

agreed its in the same line as why we hate the Cardinals… BECAUSE THEY ARE SO F’IN GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO. If I need an agent Boras would be a the top of my list.

  • http://bleachernation arcola

Barney should have been bunting 2 on no out go dale

  • Rebuilding

So, is it Russell and Gregg in the 8th and 9th? Or do we get some crazy Marmol action tonight?

    • Rebuilding

And I did the jinx again

  • Drew7

Boy, Russell couldn’t have thrown a bigger meatball If he tried.

  • Jeff

Why did Russell pitch to Trumbo???? Because Dale Sveum is an idiot and can’t manage worth a crap. That’s why.

    • Rcleven

What the heck does this have to do with Dale? Last night he takes Russell out and Villanuvea blows it. Tonight he leaves Russell in and he blows it. I did not once see Dale make a pitch. The pen just sucks.

  • Die hard

Braun sat out today’s game due to thumb injury — hmmm… From sucking it since news perhaps?

  • Jason P

It seems like umpires always call that pitch a few inches off the outside edge for a strike on Rizzo

    • Drew7

I’m pretty sure that’s what they call the “Lefty Strike” – a common tendency for umpires to call the outside strike when a lefty is hitting.

      • Jason P

I’ve heard that before, but I don’t really notice it for guys like Valbuena or Schierholtz. I remember Fukudome got that pitch called all the time on him, though. Maybe standing far off the plate like Rizzo does and Fukudome did helps induce the call.

  • Craig

Who is the new announcer tonight?

    • Jason P

      Todd Hollandsworth.

  • willis

Rondon in, kiss this one goodbye.

  • Dynastyin2017

First Russell throws a cookie to Trumbo, then 1st and 2nd nobody out and the next three batters pop out. Is this not having ‘TWTW’ or is it just bad BABIP luck?

  • Jason P

I was just thinking ‘ why would Sveum put in Rondon instead of someone better, but then I came to the realization that we have no one better

  • mudge

Rondon walks the lead-off man, sort of a “tip-of-the-cap” to the veteran Marmol. Good to see from the young man. This bodes well.
