Kris BryantFile this in the Feather in Your Cap department.

Baseball America has named San Diego third baseman Kris Bryant its 2013 College Player of the Year. The award is notable, of course, because Bryant was the Chicago Cubs’ top pick in this year’s Draft, selected second overall.

Bryant’s 2013 season is full of ridiculous, hilarious, absurd numbers, and the award is justifiable on that basis. BA’s writeup is also full of interesting nuggets about Bryant the player and the person, and is well worth your time if you’d like to know a bit more about the Cubs’ top pick this year.

The piece also notes that some scouts are willing to slap the “80 power” label on Bryant, which would give him the kind of mega-elite power you would associate with only a couple players in all of baseball at any given time (if that). The hit tool is described as a 60, which is also fantastic. You pair those together, and, if these scouts are right, Bryant is going to be a perennial All-Star talent for the Cubs. Of course he’s still got to develop and stay healthy, but dreaming on the talent is certainly fun.

Now the Cubs just have to sign the junior third baseman by the July 12th signing deadline, lest he return to school for his senior season. Coming off an all-universe season, and being selected second overall, it’s very hard to imagine Bryant spurning the Cubs (even if his advisor is Scott Boras). The slot value for that number two pick is about $6.7 million, and we’ll see how much of that the Cubs have to give Bryant to get a deal done.

  • Patrick G

Gray expecting to sign tonight and Manaea expected to sign. Alot of first rounders signing quick and hope Bryant can soon as well

    • Cyranojoe

Won’t happen. Relax, wait until July. He’ll sign, no doubt. Just going to squeeze every last penny he can get. He wouldn’t have Boras as his agent if he didn’t want to do that. It’s all good.

  • Die hard

Was Mark Prior pitcher of the year? Vague recall

    • Abe Froman

Yes Die Hard, simple math tells us if Prior was pitcher of the year and Bryant was the player of the year than Bryant =Prior=failure/trolling+unrelenting negativity<just being excited for adding some impact talent.

      • Cubbie Blues

        -extra coin for the award

      • MichiganGoat

Abe you just found the secret BellyFire recipe

      • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

Man his trolling knows no bounds…

  • http://deleted Mr. Gonzo

Someone get Sveum a bib. He’s gotta be lickin’ his chops like a drunk clown at a petting zoo.

    • Michael

To bad he won’t be around.

      • Jay

Too bad for him, maybe. But good for us.

        • Michael

Agreed. Can’t staf him as the manager

          • Michael

            Stand sorry.

  • cubzforlife

Googled Scott Boras and discovered the Cubs paid for Boras to attend Law School at the School of the Pacific. Also played for the Cubs minors. Wasn’t Wikipedia so it might be true.

  • The Dude

Just read that Steve Bartman is dropping ceremonial puck at Blackhawks game tonight.

Great article on Bryant! After reading that it sounds like he may be on that Bryce Harper level. Could be just a late bloomer. It happens.

  • Serious Cubs Fan

Nice award for Bryant but all I see from is another bargaining chip for boras to extort more money.

    • CubsFaninMS

      Glass = half empty

  • Josh

Just saw that the cubs signed Charcer Burks for slightly overslot at $170,000. So that’s one down and 39 to go………

    • Jp3

      Ummmm…. Is he the 1st to sign?😃

      • Josh

According to BA, yes…..compared to Oakland who has 27 signed

      • Josh

        • Jp3

I was under the impression we’ve signed at least 5 not counting the latest one you mentioned. I’m sure the others may have not been official.

          • Josh
            • Josh

Gray went for 826,000 under slot……hopefully that helps with negotiations with Bryant……knowing Boras it won’t, but still… can hope

              • Jp3

Yeah he must have really fallen down our boards to not draft him that far under slot… Oh well, no harm done if Bryant is the real deal

  • Serious Cubs Fan

Anyone know if Bryant has Giancarlo Stanton’esk power? Or Stanton bat speed? Its one thing to have power but to coupe it with elite bat speed

    • Kyle

Less of both. He *might* have a ceiling of Stanton’s power, but even then I doubt it.

Not that that’s any knock on Bryant. Stanton just has the best power in the game.

      • DaveY

Giancarlo Stanton? The guy with 4 hr? I hope Bryant can do better than that. 80 power isn’t about how far you can hit a ball. It’s how consistent can you hit it far. It’s not about 500 foot home runs, it’s a reliable 40+ home runs a season and lots of balls to the wall for doubles or triples.

        • bbmoney

Are you really doubting Stanton’s power?

        • King Jeff

          funny guy

    • Hansman1982

Reading on him, I’d say a ceiling of aramis Ramirez with a hair bit more power.

  • arta

Bob Horner 3B went from college to the Braves and never skipped a beat! just saying.

    • Dynastyin2017

      Different era. Financially, I mean.

    • ssckelley

So did Pete Incaviglia, I am hoping for a little better results out of Bryant than the career those 2 had.

    • Rich H

John Olerud did as well. I would be satisfied is he had that type of career.

  • Patrick G

Baez 0-3 in first game but walked and walked in first at-bat in second game. He’s got beautiful eyes

  • Spriggs

    Hope he doesn’t get mono

    • Cubbie Blues

  • Cubbie Blues

I liked my expectations for him better when I was hearing 45 hit tool. Do t get me wrong, I like hearing the 60. But, I also like keeping my expectations low and being surprised.

  • Cerambam

Baez 0-0 with 2 walks in 2 at bats yo

    • Timothy Scarbrough

This is even better then his 4 HR day.

  • Kevin

Alcantara! Wow is he overlooked. His #’s are noice(nice)

    • Rich H

He made Baseball Prospectus’s fringe 5. He is not over looked no more.

    • SenorGato

Overlooked is the last thing I would use to describe Alcantara anymore. Nice prospect THO.

      • SenorGato

Better version of Jonathan Schoop, an infield prospect who got a lot of likes from former perts out there last year.

  • SenorGato

To me there are two outcomes for Bryant here:

    Troy Glaus V2.0

Centerpiece in trade for a Stanton or whoever the hot one is that year

This is if his bat is not insane. In that case he can be the best corner OF he can be.

  • AD

Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Colorado, Texas, Arizona, Detroit, Kansas City, and Cleveland all look to be possible trade partners for the Cubs. Here’s to hoping that one of these teams is desperate enough to over pay for one of Feldman, Garza, of DeJesus among others.

  • Jason (Thundermug)

What a Day and Night !!!

BLACKHAWKS WIN in 3 ( Overtimes) and Javier Baez walked 3 times can’t figure out which is more impressive !!!!!!!!!
