busch stadiumIt’s the Cardinals, and it’s a national broadcast. No, times aren’t bright for the big league Cubs team, and yesterday’s loss was excruciating. But it’s the Cardinals, and it’s a national broadcast. Get up.

… assuming the rain doesn’t cause any problems.

Travis Wood and Shelby Miller have been two of the better pitchers in the NL this year, so it’s a great matchup on paper.

UPDATE: The game is officially under a delay, and it’s a wet mess. I’ll update you when there’s word on a start time.

  • YourResidentJag

I wish it was on ESPN but it’s blacked out by Directv.

    • willis

I watched Miller a lot when he was in Memphis, and I liked him but never thought he’d be just dominant. I’m looking forward to watching him tonight, hopefully fail miserably.

    • willis

      where do you live residentjag?

      • YourResidentJag

I live in Iowa. Blackouts for everything. So, I had to pony up and get the Sportspack from Directv, which is fine if MLB didn’t black out out of region MLB games like they do.

        • willis

I hear ya, even with national games, all Cardinal games are blocked out down here, but on my directv they put the Cards broadcast on an alternate sports south station. It’s tough to listen to them but didn’t know if that would help you at all, being in Iowa, prob not.

          • YourResidentJag

Actually, if I’m going to watch the game it will be the Cards telecast tonight because I don’t get CLTV. So, it’s essentially the same feed you get.

            • willis

Which, for the 16 or 19 or whatever games they play, it’s a benefit but their color guy, Al KRHSBGDVFSOXXHKYIEDTRFSEDXGTY makes me ill. He’s an a-hole.

        • YourResidentJag

Well, I just discovered something. WCIU is on 8.3 on local TV in the Quad Cities.

          • Dustin S

Hey thanks for the heads-up, I didn’t realize that. A fellow QC’r. Kane County will be playing at the fine park in your profile pic this Thurs-Sun btw.

            • YourResidentJag

Hey, thanks as well for the information. Should be good weather for the games. Also, this means if you get WQAD Channel locally in Iowa City, you may be able to get the game on this station as well.

  • Jp3

I hope Marmol gets a chance to redeem himself tonight in the 9th on espn during prime time against our arch enemy.😝

    • willis

Please shoot me if that happens again.

I’m guessing he’ll get to pitch, it just will be behind about 7 runs in the 6th or 7th.

      • Jp3

I’m on the fence about who’s fault that fiasco was last night but if he plays tonight in that scenario everyone from Theo down to the bat boy should get canned… That would be the definition of insanity

  • Spriggs

I think I’ll record this one and watch the Hawks tonight… if the Cubs win, I will definitely watch it later.

  • funkin cubs

Blacked out in des Moines. I hate wciu! Listening to cards telecast is almost as bad as listening to that jag off from the white sox say “he gone”! I’m going to the garage to listen to the radio!

    • Rudy

Should be on channel 13.3 over regular antenna TV in DSM

  • willis

The radar for that region looks pretty bad. Front just stalled out. May not get this one in, but hey, the positive is no arrogant Cards fans talking shit tomorrow, so there’s that.

  • Britguy

From an ex-pat now in the UK. Even overseas things look like they’re much worse than before. We don’t have baseball on the telly over here but I miss it, though I’m not sure how much I miss the Cubs anymore. They just seem like a failed business plan that used to be a team.

    • Britguy

Love the site, and good luck and god bless to you poor buggers!

      • NickB

Britguy, you might check out firstrow sports website. It’s a UK site that streams sports. You can tell it was made for soccer but I can catch the Cubs when they are on WCIU.

  • cubmig

mlbtv came on……..looks like they’ll try to get this one in…….Am watching Hawks and this game at the same time now…..cheering for both Chicago teams!!!!!!!!!!

  • willis

Big couple of batters here. Cubs aren’t scoring much tonight so can’t give up a big inning. But I’m afraid the wheels may come off here.

  • willis

Never mind, the wheels have come off.

  • Diesel

I wish someone would stab him in his neck tattoos

    • baldtaxguy

  • Mike

Maybe we can make Marmol a starter and have Travis Wood or Feldman to pitch in the bullpen….sounds like a Sveum move to me.

  • JOE

Looked an awful lot like ball 4 to me

  • JOE

When does T-Wood enter into the conversation of being one of those “core of young players” around which the future of the team is built? I love the kid personally and want to see him stick around a long time. I don’t expect him to be consistently as dominant as he’s been this year, but I certainly think he’d be a quality middle of the rotation guy in just about any big league rotation.

    • willis

He’s been damn effective tonight. They teed off on him with their best hitters in the fourth, but he collected himself and is having one of his better games against the best team in baseball. He’s got to be frustrated with how well he’s pitched, and how little his team has supported him. He can’t do much better than what he has done tonight.

As far as is he a core piece…show me a little bit more the rest of the season and I’d say hell yes, pencil him in as your 3 or 4 for a long time.

    • Jimmy James

I would, but he may be the best trade piece they can deal this year

      • JOE

You’re probably right, but if he’s capable of being a long term 3/4 guy in the rotation then why would you risk trading him for a prospect who projects to fill that exact same role (I doubt they’d be able to net anything more than that). Also that last play was ridiculously ugly and a horrible call at the end.

  • YourResidentJag

What a bad call at the plate!

    • cubchymyst

Yeah, the neck tattoo probably distracted the ump

      • YourResidentJag

    • willis

Yeah that was simply terrible. But expected. They get every break possible all the time. The Cubs…not so much.

      That call was ridiculous.

    • BT

How does WGN not have a better angle than that? And why does it take Quirk going out to ask the ump to send the runner back to second when the dumbass second base ump knew full well the runner advanced when time was called as he had his hands up the whole time?

      • YourResidentJag

        Cards 2-Umps 0.

  • DarthHater

    Cards 2 – Umps 2 – Cubs 0

    • YourResidentJag

      Yeah, more accurate.

  • YourResidentJag

This game is proof positive that ERA means a whole lot less than FIP. Maybe FIP should have an additional weight for umpire error.

    • DarthHater

      Rename it F-ing Idiot Percentage

      • YourResidentJag

  • willis

The Cubs weren’t going to win this game anyway, but still shitty to have two runs score that inning, when it should have been no runs. Terrible umpiring.

  • BleedingCubbieBlue

I think umpires need to be held responsible. Get fined and suspended.

  • Kevin

Question. What causes a Cub player to go into a slump?

Answer. Sign him to a contract extension.

  • Hatingmolina

Did it seem that Molina kicked and punched Wood as he slid? We need to warn him his next AB.

    • DarthHater

You know, I kinda thought that at first, but after watching the slow-mo replay, it didn’t really look like Molina did anything to Wood except try to avoid getting tangled.

  • rsquared

Time to send Rizzo to Iowa to work on everything.

    • willis

Oh boy, you just invited the hit squad…

      • Cheryl

Just a question, not taking any side, but did this happen once before to Rizzo where he went below what was expected in his second year elsewhere? Just wondering.

  • YourResidentJag

JD: “Henry Rodriguez–Control seems to be an issue.” And then…..

  • DarthHater

Wild Thing Rodriguez nails that stinkin’ ump. Good boy!

    • YourResidentJag

Hey Darth, you want to get some good memes. Go to the Occupy Bacon site on Facebook. Yep. Totally realize that I’m giving you further ammunition here, but good ammunition.

  • willis

This lineup wasn’t going to be great, but with Castro and Rizzo regressing into crapola status, it is really ineffective. Needed those two to be much better than this. Hard to explain what has happen, but neither look anything like we expected at the plate.

  • mudge

and Castillo, one homer this season.

  • rsquared

In my 30 years of watching this team, this has got to be the biggest pile of crap. The fertilizer on the grass at Wrigley has more purpose than these guys.

    • willis

Well, it’s only going to get worse from here. We have another 2-3 years of complete crap, and IF everything works out as planned, then maybe in 2016 or 2017 the team will be ok. But in this division, with the cards, reds and pirates as good as they are, looks like this team is buried for awhile.

    • Jimmy James

Now your just being silly…we’ve been way worse

  • Bsteady

I would say I’m not a coach or anything, but I am a coach. Rodriguez’s wildness is because he flies open with his left shoulder and that heat comes bursting out with no control. He’s standing straight up until the last second and bam.. He needs to use his legs sooner and be more controlled. Not just a huge explosion at the end. Pitching is more about PITCHING and less about throwing. Brett, please pass this along to Bosio and Sveum, and especially Theo and co. before they release him.
