kane county cougarsOn Tuesday it was the Midwest League reveling in the All-Star festivities, and once again Cub prospects represented themselves well.

Bijan Rademacher and Rock Shoulders both made an appearance in the game, but it was starting DH Dan Vogelbach who doubled for the West Division’s only extra base hit. Vogelbach finished his day 2 for 2 with a double and a walk.

On the mound, Tayler Scott and Nathan Dorris both pitched briefly but effectively in relief. Neither factored into the decision.

If you missed the game but are a subscriber to MILB.TV, you should be able to catch the replay. This was one of the very few times you will be able to see any players from this team play in any capacity this season unless you visit the ballpark in person, so it might be well worth taking advantage of.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – The Cubs won easily, 7-0.
Tennessee – The Smokies had the day off.
Daytona – The Cubs overcame three errors by pounding out 17 hits, including two grand slams, in this 14-8 slugfest win.
Kane County – Kane County was also off. They resume from their All-Star break on Thursday.
Boise – The Hawk’s offense never got going in this game. They lost 9-2.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Nick Struck started the shutout and lasted 6.2 innings. He allowed 3 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 3.
  • [Iowa] Casey Coleman put three on base, but he did successfully record four scoreless outs in relief of Struck. Eduardo Sanchez completed the shutout by fanning two in the ninth. [Brett: Hmm. I guess Sanchez must have cleared waivers. Sweet.]
  • [Iowa] Second baseman Logan Watkins had a pretty good game. He reached three times on two singles and a walk, and also stole his sixth base of the season.
  • [Iowa] The Iowa outfield also put up some good numbers. Brian Bogusevic finished 2 for 3 with a walk, Dave Sappelt (batting cleanup) was 3 for 5 with a double, and Brent Lillibridge finished 1 for 2 with two walks.
  • [Daytona] Let’s start with the big blows. Tim Saunders highlighted his 3 for 5 day a grand slam. It was just his second home run of the year. Saunders also doubled.
  • [Daytona] Javier Baez had just the one hit, but it was his 14th home run. And it was also a grand slam.
  • [Daytona] John Andreoli reached base five times on three hits and two walks. Zeke DeVoss and Dustin Geiger also had multi-hit games.
  • [Daytona] On a day when there were more than enough to hits and runs to go around, Yao-Lin Wang tossed two scoreless frames and struck out two in the process.
  • [Daytona] The bad news: Daytona pitchers gave up 7 walks and only struck out 3. The good news: Daytona hitters earned 6 walks and only struck out 4 times.
  • [Boise] Trey Lang struck out 4 in 5 innings, but he also allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits.
  • [Boise] Mark down two more singles and a walk for Shawon Dunston.
  • [Boise] David Bote hit his first home run of the season in the eighth. A double by Jose Dore was the only other extra base hit.

Other News

  • As nice as the Iowa win is, keep in mind that it came against Nashville. The Sounds are almost historically bad this year. For example, despite being a Pacific Coast League team the Sounds have just two players in their starting lineup hitting over .260. The Cubs have six.
  • How in the world does Logan Watkins have just six stolen bases? His eight caught steals are part of the explanation, but that still rings hollow. He had 28 steals in 35 attempts last season, and 21 steals in 26 attempts the year before. His relative reluctance to run this year is, on the surface anyway, a little strange.
  • Spriggs

What is going on with Soler?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Luke

Minor leg injury. Nothing serious. He might wind up on the DL anyway, but it isn’t anything should impact him long term.

      • Spriggs

Was that why he was removed from the AS game?

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Luke

Good chance of it, but I don’t know that for sure. I’m guessing he was hurt going into the game, and the All-Star manager gave him the start so he could some action, but pulled him before an at bat to minimize the risk of further injury.

          • Cedlandrum

He went on 7 Day DL yesterday I think it was.

          • bryan

                    TheRiot is a tool.

                    • wvcubsfan

TheRiot it quite the tool and should have remained quiet during his stay in the quaint facilities that as the Friendly Confines.

  • Hansman1982

Struck didn’t allow a vase runner until the 4th and his first hit was in the 5th. Just dominated those first 4 innings.

    • Spriggs

I don’t think vase runners should ever be allowed.

    • BluBlud

Since you wanted to pick at me the other day, I have to ask. Would a Vase Runner be a person who runs around a vase, or a Vase who runs the bases.

      • Hansman1982

It was a new feature added to Baseketball with the last CBA. Players run to the correct base with a vase and then Gallagher stuffs a watermelon in and smashes it.

        • wvcubsfan

His VOBA must really be great this year.

      • Timothy Scarbrough

Perhaps a person who runs with a vase.

  • BluBlud

Baez had 2 So, but when you have a HR and a BB in the same game, you can deal with that. Time for a promotion, sooner rather then later.

Andreoli just keeps hitting and walking. He really needs to be in Tennessee.

I see the Cubs releasing/trading/promoting and of these players over the next 6 weeks:
Bogusevic, Jackson, Sappelt, Vitters, Watkins, Lake, Lillibridge, Maysonet, Murphey.

    This will allow promotions for:
Alcantara, Bour(if healthy enough), Torreyes, Villanueva, Ha, Szczur from Tennessee to Iowa.

Baez, Soler, Geiger(possibly), Sanders and Andreoli from Daytona to Tennessee.

and then Maybe Almora, Vogelbach, Shoulders and a few others from Kane County. It almost the end of June and the All-Star Games are passing, time for some promotions.

    • cub2014

blublud here is my humble opinion on player
      moves:
      1. Barney traded: alcantera to mlb
(i will miss that amazing defense)
      2. dejesus traded: call up Lake
      3. ransom traded: call up clevenger
      one extra spot: bogusevic
      4. so 4 (stewart) open AAA spots
      move up:Villanueva,Szczur,Bour,
      5. so 3-4 to AA; Solar,Baez,Bryant,Geiger
with Lake & Clevenger that gives you great flexability
      at MLB level.

      • bryan

Dejesus is on the DL, Ransom doesn’t have that much value yet, and idt the cubs are gonna give up barney without getting something of value out of him. I think Theo’s price for barney is a wee bit high and it will take a desperate team to make a move for him.

        • Spriggs

But Ransom has been in the majors for like 11 or 12 years. I doubt if his trade value is ever going to amount to much, but it won’t get any higher than it is about now IMO.

And I doubt if any team would be willing to give up much for Barney, so in that respect, I agree Theo might be wanting too much.

          • Good Captain

Agreed as to Barney being traded alone absent a crisis on another team, but his potential inclusion as another player in the trade might bump up the level and/or numbers of prospects involved w/ another “anchor” piece. I’m not as convinced that Alcantera is ready to backfill at the MLB level yet though, so that might temper this move.

            • JBlades

If Barney doesn’t bring much value back, I say keep him and use him as a defensive replacement/bench. He is still fairly young and could improve his’ hitting, he doesn’t strike out much and works the count, which the cubs need more players that do that. And if our SS or 2B get hurt he could fill in.

        • cub2014

Spriggs,I agree in perfect world where dejesus
is healthy and barney is hitting his usual
.250 but ransom’s value for a playoff team
is as high as it can get right now. if the cubs
have a good lineup barney would be an
          acceptable #8 hitter

      • cubbie blue thru n thru

There’s no chance alcantara reaches the bigs this year. The way theo and them are I’d be surprised if he’d get to Iowa for anything more than a cup of tea

      • mak

Alcantara is not getting a call up this year. Watkins is ahead of him in line.

    • Cub Fan Dan

Agree on Andreoli. If there’s anyone overdue for a promotion, its him. He’s had 750 PA in A+ wlth a .301 BA & a .401 OBA

    • Cedlandrum

Bour isn’t going to get promoted anytime this season in my opinion unless Brad Nelson has an opt out in his contract. Bour hasn’t really even played much this year. He is a clone of Nelson so I think it speaks volumes to what the Cubs perceive as Bour’s future considering he played well in AA last year and started the year there again this year.

  • Spriggs

I’m hoping I get to see at LEAST 3 of Baez, Soler, Almora, and Bryant in the Arizona Fall League this year.

    • bryan

you think Pierce Johnson and Pauly Blackburn will join them?

      • Spriggs

I don’t think you can have that many guys from below AA, so definitely not Blackburn. I know there are exceptions to that, but in general you can only have 1 guy – which I’m hoping will be Almora.

        • bbmoney

I think it’s just 1 guy from below AA. They put Baez in the AFL last year, but couldn’t also get Soler there if memory serves.

          • Spriggs

I think there is an exception for international players – which I read that Soler would have qualified under, but not sure why they decided not to use it.

            • bbmoney

Interesting. Maybe they just wanted him to get used to the states and not put too much on him.

              • Spriggs

I think that might have been it.

    • Mak

They need to get a look at a few guys who need to be added to the 40 man or risk Rule V exposure. So I’m think guys like Burke, Amaya, Ha, Jokish and the like will get looks.

      • AB

        You mean Alcantra??

Don’t think anyone is going to take Amaya in the Rule V draft.

        • DarthHater

I don’t think Amaya has enough pro time yet to be eligible for Rule V, anyway.

          • mak

            Darth, see: http://www.thecubreporter.com/06182013/crystal-ballin-spit-ballin-cubs-40-man-roster — he’s eligible.

I agree Amaya may be a long shot, but he’s a legit prospect who can play defense, so a forward thinking office (Astros, e.g.) might take a shot.

Alcantara is a lock to be added, so I can see the FO using his spot on someone who is on the bubble.

            • Good Captain

I suspect both Jackson and Vitters may not make the 40 man, assuming they aren’t included in a trade package before.

  • #1lahairfan

Yeah I’ve been wondering about Watkin’s SB amount as well.

  • http://bleachernation.com someday…2015?

Baez with another walk today. That’s at least 8 in his last 8 games. Very small sample size? Absolutely. Very encouraging? Damn right!
