brian bogusevicWith Carlos Marmol being designated for assignment and the Cubs preferring to return to a more normal bench-bullpen ratio, outfielder Brian Bogusevic has been added to the 40-man roster and called up from AAA Iowa. I mentioned it in the Marmol/Stewart piece, but Bogusevic deserves his own discussion.

Bogusevic joins the bench after doing everything a guy can do in AAA to get a call-up. Although 29 and not a threat to become a regular right now, Bogusevic is probably a bit better than your average 29-year-old AAA roster filler. For one thing, he’s already had a few years’ experience in the bigs (some of which was pretty solid). For another, he can play all over the outfield, and the expectations are limited to “fill in adequately on defense, and hit righties occasionally.” Moreover, Bogusevic is a converted pitcher, who didn’t take to the field permanently until 2009.

At Iowa, Bogusevic was hitting .319/.418/.512 in 304 plate appearances. He’d hit 10 homers and stolen 16 bases (against only 2 CS). As I said: the guy was handling the stick. In part-time duty with the Astros in 2011, Bogusevic hit .287/.348/.457, but he came far back down when used as a regular in 2012 (.203/.297/.299). In the upper minors, he’s tended to be a .270/.360/.400 type. Potentially very useful in the bigs, but not a starter.

It’ll be interesting to see how he’s used. With David DeJesus on the disabled list with a shoulder strain, a lefty outfielder who can play all over makes sense for the call-up, though the composition of the rest of the outfield will make it hard for Bogusevic to see starts. The Cubs already have lefties Julio Borbon and Ryan Sweeney, making the team deep in part-timers who bat lefty and can play all over the outfield.

Sweeney, for his part, has pretty much locked down the starting center field job in DeJesus’s absence. Bogusevic won’t fill in for Nate Schierholtz against righties, because obviously, but he might spell Alfonso Soriano from time to time. If Soriano were to be dealt at some point over the next month, Bogusevic would obviously see a greater opportunity. The Cubs would probably like to see him play regularly in the second half of the season just to see what he’s got.

Now is the time for bold changes.

    • Mike

      I second that.

    • 5412

One of the famous lines from Leo Duricher was “back up the truck”. If a guy was not doing the job, give another kid a chance.

It’s time to move that process along.

    • Voice of Reason

      Bold changes?

The team is living up to its preseason billing of being awful. There such things as bold changes!

      • TWC

Second bullet down. That’s from 2011.

Listen, kid, I know you take great delight in being a tedious pedant with you Cubs-will-suck-I-knew-it-all-along routine, but that was swing-and-a-miss so hard you corkscrewed yourself a couple of feet into the ground.

        • Drew7

Wait a minute: I see Brett trying to take credit for “Cricketts”. Does that mean Brett = cRazyhOrse?

        • MichiganGoat

          Oh those were the days…

    • DarthHater

Apparently, being the voice of reason does not include the ability to detect sarcasm. TWC, please be more explicit in the future. Thanks.

      • Fishin Phil

We old-timers got it, and appreciated it. :)

        • DarthHater

And your head is made of wood…

      • Ian Afterbirth

Maybe he could do a winky thing….

        • DarthHater

Always works for me. TWC thinks winky things are only for adolescent girls, but I find them useful for communicating with the pathologically dense.

  • João Lucas

Help me I can’t find the subject in the first sentence of the second paragraph!

(Yup, trying to come up with a way of pointing out a mistake without sounding like an asshole.)

    • hansman1982

Proof positive that Brett just has a bunch of fill-in-the-blank stories ready to go for these situations.

      • Brett

Ha. That’s what happens when I start typing out an intro to the Pre-Gamin’ that gets way too long, and I do some copying and pasting.

    • Hawkeye

I haven’t seen him say either way, but does Brett apprecaite people pointing out typos or errors. I suppose if it was a major statistical error, he would welcome that, but just a simple misspelling of a word? Seems to be something people enjoy doing as of late. Almost like they read the story looking for mistakes, as opposed to reading for the content. I guess I almost expect a few errors from somebody that is putting up this many words in a given day.

I know it would drive me crazy if somebody critiqued my work all day. Those that live in glass houses…

      • UCF

      • TWC

“Those that live in glass houses…”

… like it when people watch them walk around naked?

… must pay a shitton of money to their window washers?

… shouldn’t live in a seismically active region?

… probably have a helluva time keeping their house warm in winter?

        Am I close?

      • Brett

I actually do appreciate it when the intent is to help.

  • another JP

Borbon is expendable. Nice speed but can’t hit like the other OF, so I think he’s just a placeholder until Clevenger is healthy and can return.

  • Frank

I’m so depressed that they DFA’s Marmol. I’m sorry, I laughed so hard when I wrote that, I almost wet myself. It’s about time they did it. Maybe now they can give some kids a chance to what they can do.

  • Rebuilding

Bogusevic is really interesting. Normally you could just write off a 29 yo AAA outfielder, but given he didn’t convert until 2009 there aren’t really very many comps. Ankiel is the only one I can think of, but Ankiel has never put up anywhere near the line Bogusevic has this year in the high minors (Ankiel is more of a low OB% guy). Of course Bogusevic wasn’t very good the last 3 years in the PCL. So who knows – should be interesting

  • mdavis

could get some ABs with the 6 games against the AL coming up.

  • ssckelley

Guess Borbon gets to battle Bogusevic for the 5th outfield spot, I cannot imagine both of them staying on the active roster once DeJesus comes back from the DL.

  • Little Lord Fontenot

He’s a 29 year old roster filler on a bad team, if you find this interesting, you don’t get out much.

    • Rebuilding

Haha. Maybe I should have said he’s unique

    • Brett

Even if that were true, on the 2013 Chicago Cubs, these are the kinds of things you have to find interesting if you want to find anything interesting at all.

      • TWC

What is the Cubs 2013 most interesting player for the 2013 Chicago Cubs players?

        • Rcleven

          Good or bad interesting?

        • Scott

          • DarthHater

I understand he’s been really raking – … his back yard.

            • TWC

I’ve got three days to report to Mesa. I’m entitled to a little R&R after a long college ball season.

              • Fishin Phil

Make sure you tweet us when you get there.

    • DarthHater

I know it’s not nearly as interesting as grousing at people about what they call interesting.

  • Jay

Dude’s been raking in AAA. Much rather see him out there than Borbon. Now if we could just DFA Camp and get out from under Soriano, I’d crack the bubbly.

    • another JP

Great idea, you think of all of us on the MB rag on Sori and Camp like we did Marmol the FO will finally unload them too? We can only hope-

  • fromthemitten

Glad to hear he got the call up instead of Crappelt… he’s played his ass off and deserved it. Maybe this is a precurser to a Scuzr callup?

    • fromthemitten

… or Ha. I’m obviously referring to going from AA to AAA

    • Jed Jam Band

Ha was already promoted to take Jackson’s spot while he is on the DL.

  • curt

with Stewart and marmol gone Brett is soriano On a short time span too if they can’t get a deal done for him .

    • Patrick

I don’t even know what to think of this comment….

    • DarthHater

Brett, now that Stewart and Marmol are gone, if the FO can’t complete a deal for Soriano, might they DFA him, too?

There, I fixed that for you. 😛

  • cubmig

Is it Bogusevic’s time? Do his minor league numbers mean anything? Will they mean anything? The answer time has come. How will he answer? Will hope match reality? Or will reality reveal a different truth?

    Good luck “Bogu”.

    • Pat

Let’s be realistic in expectations. He’s coming up as the fifth outfielder and is not likely to get many at bats. Let the cries of “why bring him up if you aren’t going to play him” commence!

      • North Side Irish

        Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat 3m
Bogusevic will likely be DH when #Cubs travel to AL parks

So he’ll get the usual number of National League DH at bats…

      • DarthHater

That cry would make no sense. Better to give the AAA at-bats to a developing youngster than to a 29-year-old journeyman.

    • DarthHater

His minor league numbers are bogus.

  • cubmig

I will be at the 3 Mariners – Cubs games this week end. If Bogu is to be used as a DH, I may get to at least see what he does. I have no expectations, just curiosity. The future is here and so far away.

  • North Side Irish

Not even close to on topic, but it is Cubs related…

    • Roggan

Not a pleasant thing to stumble upon. But I couldn’t help but laugh at the first 2 fbook comments.

  • nkniacc13

Im going to guess that by the time that Dejesus is ready to return the Cubs will have have made at least 1 OF trade

  • Michael

At some point this year, I see Junior Lake getting called up to Wrigley. At last look, he was hitting .368 at Iowa. It was fewer than 100 ABs, but still promising. Who knows, Castro’s struggles may continue, and Lake may take his spot at SS.

    • willis

Doubtful on taking Castro’s place. Yes to getting called up eventually. Saying that he’s looked like doggy poo at the plate these last two nights in Memphis.

But before this he was doing great. He’ll find that again and be up sometime near the deadline.

  • Fastball

Lahair handled the stick at AAA but he lasted 2 1/2 months before his collapse at the plate. Hope he shocks us but dont count on it.

  • Die hard

Hairston anybody? A million here and a million there and pretty soon you’re talking real money to paraphrase Everett Dirksen… When is Ricketts Sr going to have a heart to heart with his #1 son about the way Theo is depleting the family fortune ?

    • gocatsgo2003

.132 BABIP. Reversion to the mean should mean drastically improved overall numbers.

      • MichiganGoat

Die hard does not believe in your “facts” “stats” or “numbers”

    • Cubbie Blues

Probably when he buys into the team ownership?
