God’s Wrath Watch: Ryan Sweeney Has a Broken Rib, Out for Four to Six Weeks

gods-wrathYou can really only shake your head. Well, shake your head and feel bad for the player.

Another Chicago Cubs center fielder has succumbed to a wall. Despite initial X-rays indicating no fracture, it turns out that Ryan Sweeney *did* break a rib last night when he crashed into a wall, and now he’s going to be out for four to six weeks. The timing is, once again, terrible, given that Sweeney had been playing so well in center field during David DeJesus’s absence (also thanks to a crash into a wall), and had actually emerged as a legitimate, complementary trade chip. That’s now essentially off the table.

And, since he’s a free agent after the year, you can’t even grasp at the silver lining of, “well, now they won’t trade him, which makes me happy, because I want the Cubs to keep him.” The Cubs can keep him, but they’ll have to sign him to make it happen.

All in all, it’s another suckily timed, suckily targeted injury for the Cubs.

Sweeney will head to the DL and the Cubs will make a move to replace Sweeney on the roster. That corresponding move hasn’t yet been announced.

Logan Watkins isn’t Iowa starting line-up. Could just be a day off or he could be getting called up only time will tell.

I choose to blame the messenger.

No more “What are we going to do with all of these outfielders?” threads Brett.

That’s fine, but only if you promise no more “Cubs trade 14 minor leaguers for David Price or Giancarlo Stanton” posts on the MB.
