confused computerThe last 24 hours have been the most active in the Chicago Cubs’ world than I can remember since the Trade Deadline last year. Maybe the Winter Meetings before this season. But it sure doesn’t feel like it.

As a courtesy to any of you who may have missed anything – and would prefer not to – here’s a recap of everything that’s gone down …

  • jacob w

Last post for the day finally?

  • preacherman86

What else we gonna do to get the extra 300k for Jimenez?

  • Rebuilding

Brett, remember sitting at the office thinking how you could do a Cubs blog so you didn’t have to work such long hours? Well, doing what you love really isn’t work. Thanks for all of the content daily

    • Randy

I concur wholeheartedly. Thanks Brett, for giving me ONE website that I can count on to house and update any possible relevant information relating to the Cubs. You, sir, are a saint.

  • Danny B

I’m eagerly awaiting a new edition of our prospect rankings. How many did we add today that would be in our organization’s top 20? Assuming Arrietta & Strop are ineligible/not top 20 material, I’m guessing all 3 of the international prospects though?

Brett & Luke, great job keeping up on all of this. Bleacher Nation is my first go-to website for Cubs news, and I read everything. I even enjoy the comments, although I only jump in here every now and then.

Commentors, who’s next to go? Garza to the Padres?

    • Rebuilding

No, those guys won’t be on any prospect lists for at least a few years. Way too far away

    • Rebuilding

And I’ll guess Garza to the Red Sox

      • Rebuilding

For Allen Webster and Blake Swihart

    • Kyle

You could probably put 1-2 of the IFAs on the top 20 if you wanted. You could just as easily leave them off.

      • SenorGato

I guess I haven’t thought this through all the way, but Torres has a legit shot for top 20s. That’s about it THO.

    • Scotti

I’d say one of today’s signings make the Cub’s top 20.

      • Rich H

Not till they get stateside. So when they get to be 19,20,21 and get to the AZL then one of them may be in the top 20 unless one of them is real special then it will be in 2 years not 4.

      • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

No way. Most of them haven’t even played organized games. These kids showcase skills in front of scouts. Give them 3 years of seasoning before they come stateside if we ever see them.

  • Mr. Gonzo

Could the Marmol rumor last night been a media distraction from the Feldman trade? Outstanding work today Brett, you deserve a bathtub of cold beer!

    • Rebuilding

      The Marmol rumor was true

      • Mr. Gonzo

I should have said trade leak.

  • Brian Peters

Thank you for all you do, Brett!

    • willis

I echo this, I can imagine today was simply wild. Good job keeping up.

      • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

        Thanks, chums.

  • Dustin S

Kyle Hendricks had another great outing for the Smokies tonight. I’d really like to see what he can do up at Iowa.

  • willis

And Junior Lake is 3-3 with two triples and two runs scored…man I’d love to see him up sooner than later. I know PT and ABs are important for him at this point, so bringing up Sappelt isn’t as big of risk. But when there’s some ABs to be had, hopefully he gets the call.

5 more scoreless for Hendricks too, was a 88 through 5, so you hope for more economical use of pitches, but still, ERA right around 2 now. Pretty impressive.

    • Jp3

Why did he get pulled after 88 pitches And 5 scoreless? Seems a bit odd

      • willis

I wondered that too. I think he could have gone out for more. Hopefully he didn’t feel shitty and it was just the mgr being conservative.

        • Jp3

What about a possible promotion? If we have another SP traded in the next few days he seems like our next best option. Probably a little early but mag…

          • Rcleven

Needs about another 25-30 innings before they will bump him up.

      • Rcleven

Na. Pitch limits in the high 70′s is more the norm in the Cubs minors. 88 is kind of pushing the envelope.

        • Jp3

Ok, just wondering because 5IP for Hendricks is very odd, but whatevs

        • Good Captain

Seems to me that part of the motivation in keeping pitching counts lower in addition to lowering the risk of the injury is giving more time to other players also in need of development – a win/win I guess.

  • The Dude

Homer Bailey no no against Giants through 8.1. Great job the past 24 hours, Brett. We appreciate it.

  • Dustin S

Also, great job Brett on the coverage.

Honestly today has been pretty exciting as a Cubs fan. Seeing the top ranked Int’l signings already, the shrewd moves to build pool money, plus some progress on the farm. Maybe I’m just drinking the Theo/Jed Kool-Aid, but these are the kinds of moves that fans of some other losing teams are probably wishing their front-office were making.

  • Craig

Why did the Cubs feel the need to send the Dodgers over $200,000 in international signing money? It makes no sense. They could of used the funds to sign Jimenez. Why not just waive Marmel rather than trade international money??

    • DocPeterWimsey

The Cubs probably did not feel the need to do it; the Dodgers probably felt the need to demand it. Reading through Brett’s updates, the Cubs came out ahead on international monies today. So, they actually are further up on their ability to sign Eloy Jimenez. At any rate, it seems improbable that the Cubs will come up $200K short: if they are short, then it will be because of the monies spent on Torres et al.

      • Die hard

Your analysis dovetails with my theory that another deal with Dodgers has been shook on … Otherwise standing alone this deal is a head and crotch scratcher

        • Carew

Or we could just look at it as “holy crap, the cubs were able to get a player for Marmol.” It’s nothing much, but they got rid of Marmol. Therefore the trade is a good one. That’s just the way I want to look at it.

          • Rcleven

I look at the trade as Cubs save $500,000 of pay roll. P/u a crap shoot BP’er that they can cut at any time.

  • Diamond Don

Great day to be a Cub fan!! Love all the moves. Theo, Jed and gang know what they are doing. The future is really looking bright Cubbie fans!

    • Die hard

Whatever you’re drinking can we have some? What exactly has been achieved? Anybody can throw darts at a dartboard hoping to bullseye instead of BS… Time will tell but there is no way on this great green earth that anybody knows anything about how this will turn out..

      • waittilthisyear

you dont have to see how the deals work out to appreciate the strategy behind them

        • baldtaxguy

….Or to throw the deals under the bus.

  • Adam

Brett, you should make everyone aware of Tim Dierkes note today…

“MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes reports that Arrieta has two year and 99 days of service time, meaning that the Cubs can avoid Super Two status if he accumulates less than 53 days of service time this season (Twitter link). If Arrieta picks up fewer than 73 days of service time, he will be controllable through the 2017 season.”

  • Eternal Pessimist

Oouchhh! too early to give up on Rusin, but that sure looked like a home run derby pitch!

    • Eternal Pessimist

And how about another one just like that….

      • Eternal Pessimist

And anoth….oh wait he was robbed at the 400 foot sign.

      • Mark S

You hit a home run! And you hit a home run! Everyone hits a home run!

  • Jono

Im expecting to see either gregg, soriano, or shierholtz traded very soon to get the international money needed to sign jimenez. Maybe garza, but im guessing they’d wait on him to press teams a little more. Now that I wrote that, garza will probably get traded tomorrow morning

    • Die hard

What if a blockbuster with Dodgers was shook on as part of Marmol deal? Jackson and Castro for some of their good minor league pitching? That would convince Tunney that Cubs are serious about building a winner

      • gocatsgo2003

And you’re accusing others of heavy drinking?

        • Can’t think of a cool name

          Best post of the day!

          • baldtaxguy

            Hee

      • Jono

Dodgers have too many outfielders and IF the cubs trade castro, its not until baez comes up, IF he comes up with the cubs. ….and I can’t tell if you’re even being serious.

        • Die hard

What is fact is they need IF help so bad they are chasing Utley as we speak.. So couple that with a head scratcher in The Marmol deal there had better be a chapter 2 or else Theo has lots of explaining to do and I don’t mean to Ricketts but instead to Pappy Ricketts and the other Ricketts kids who all have skin in this game

          • Internet Random

And Ronnie Wickers and Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

          • Jono

            What?

            • Internet Random

On account of all the Cuban pornography available from March through June.

[Let's see if that gets through the spam filter.]

              • Internet Random

                Guess so.

      • Carew

This is dumb, even for your comments

  • Diamond Don

Not drinking any cool aide. Garza is next to Boston and Soriano after that to the Yankees. More young pitchers coming Cub’s way with both trades.

  • Crockett

Rusin is the epitome of lifetime minor leaguer. What horrible stuff. Nibbling at 87? Showing the ball early?

Would much rather have seen Moscoso or Loud.

    • Njriv

Muskat, I believe via twitter said that Rusin was pitching on three days rest.

  • Diamond Don

Allen Webster key player coming from Boston for Garza.

    • Crockett

Any inside knowledge? Or just speculation/blowing smoke? I’m guessing the latter.

  • Deacon

Please no!! Colletti will never make a favorable deal with the Cubs. He held us hostage for how long in the Dempster negotiations?

    • Rebuilding

Webster is with the Red Sox now

  • http://Bleachernation Lou Brock

Lake with 2 triples and a double tonight all against tough righty Wacha from the Cards AAA team. This kid deserves a look at third now for Cubs.

    • Jared

No he doesn’t. Valbuena is playing fine ball, give Lake the rest of the year…then look to next, IF necessary!

    • baldtaxguy

This post doesn’t happen if Lake was 0-3 last night. Let’s see some PA’s before we “now…now…now.”

  • David

After today’s free give away of Feldman – I feel that they’ll trade the Shark – unfortunately. Hopefully we’ll get someone good.

    • bbmoney

Why do you feel that? Those are two guys in totally different places and totally different positions to provide value to this team after 2013.

      • David

I feel 2016 is the year the FO is shooting for; not 2014 or 2015. Shark will be on his decline then. I realize you have to begin to keep some talent at some point – I just don’t think we’re ready to have the sustained success yet. I feel that we should “shop him” and take the best deal.

        • baldtaxguy

          I feel you are over-feeling.

  • Die hard

Theo inherited Castro … There is no kinship there … He can disinherit him just as fast

    • Carew

He also extended him, so he thinks he can stick.

  • Die hard

Good point — there may be a hand shake second deal there too…

  • jh

If Berkman is Fat Elvis is it safe to say Griffin is Fat Hanson?

    • Internet Random

      Hirschfelder, Dazed and Confused.

      • jh

That is funny. I was just talking to a guy at work about that movie today. Well done sir.

#Cubs told Camp to not leave his hotel room. Don’t think it involves a trade however.

Just to make sure Sveum doesn’t put him in?

    • Carew

      Probably DFA’d

    • Internet Random

“Just to make sure Sveum doesn’t put him in?”

      Heh.

  • Josh

    Cubs sign eloy!! From mlbtraderumors

    • willis

That’s one of the big fish eh? Would be awesome.
