Damn, that is one f-ing ugly ballpark.

    1. nkniacc13

why do you think they want to go to SJ?

    2. Rebuilding

I’ve been there. There’s a reason teams want baseball only facilities

  2. nkniacc13

What are the chances the cubs are done making noise today as far as signings and trades?

    1. DarthHater

They will now begin making a giant sucking sound on the field of play, instead.

      1. Timmy

And half of the readers of this blog will call our 8-2 loss “statistically consistent with a victory according to fangraphs”, and then go eat at Chipotle.

        1. DarthHater

After eating at Chipotle, we will really start making some noise.

        2. Timmy

The other half will say “dang we lost, maybe we should sign better players”, to which the other half will argue “we’re statistically the best team since the Ruth Yankees if you add WAR”, and that “winning is no longer important, saving money for ownership is the purpose of baseball”.

          1. Timmy

            *bows*

                i already did

                1. DarthHater

I was memorializing the event for posteriority.

                  1. Timmy

                    i get it… “posterior”ity

  3. cb

    Damn, now I want Chipotle.

  4. ElsewhereOtherwise

Josh Donaldson was part of the Rich Harden deal, for those of you who did not know.

    Hindsight is woe.

    1. On The Farm

Did you really think Billy Beane was going to let the Cubs fleece him after Gallagher and Patterson ended up as duds?

  5. William

I said to myself “there is a baseball game today,” before clicking on this. Brilliant minds think alike, Brett! :-)

  6. Headscratchin

Chipotle?? Don’t they have Freebirds in Chicago yet?

  7. Rich H

I have a question. Wouldn’t it be better to move up the rotation a day with the off day rather than burn a roster spot on a pitcher for a start now? I mean with the off day everyone is on regular rest anyway. If you are trying to stretch out Vilaneava anyway, move everyone up a day and then in 4 days if he isn’t ready to pitch bring up Rusin instead of rushing the guy off a plane and onto the mound today.

    1. willis

I didn’t think about that, but that’s a good point. Now we’ll see a hurried, time zone confused Rusin go get shelled and have this game lost by the bottom of the third. That’s no good.

This is the 5th day for Garza so it would have been and Wood starting off this series, much better than this option.

      1. Rebuilding

I think you answered the question when you said Garza. Not saying they will move him before he starts tomorrow, but if its possible much better to have Rusin get shelled

        1. willis

I thought that as I was typing, that something may be possibly out there, and whoever that team is/was asked them to keep him off the bump tonight and it could close tonight or tomorrow.

  8. curt

Brett you said before to traffic this early you should get extra value, did the cubs get this from Baltimore .

    1. Mike Taylor (no relation)

That all depends on the International Pool money and how much they received in order to sign the two big names (and if they pan out).

  9. Mr. Gonzo

If you bought a house and the foundation was worse than the roof, which one would u fix first? Say u want to also add onto the house, causing a longer turnaround time for the foundation, and u find out ur budget doesn’t go as far as u thought. But u can focus on one and choose to expand the foundation to fit a mansion. The house and roof won’t go up as fast as u want but u know that when it does it could be the sexiest house and roof in the whole damn country. Not every shingle will make u post to Instagram, but the payoff could have a roof that makes Santa pitch a tent.

I love watching this house get rebuilt. Longest analogy ever from the peanut gallery. Queue Stairway and the jeers

    1. waittilthisyear

well said though gonzo. we can’t stop here. this is bat country

      1. Mr. Gonzo

        Still humping the American Dream

  10. PR Cajun

This site will be buzzing later tonight (or early morning for some of us) after Rusin tosses a no hitter in his call up then gets sent back to Iowa tomorrow.

    1. On The Farm

Be realistic, its going to be a CG, 5 H shutout with 6 Ks, 0 BBs. This allows us to keep Carlos V in the pen so we have four (soon to be three after Gregg gets packaged) solid arms in the pen.

    2. Rebuilding

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rusin pitch fairly well down the stretch this year. He’s been very good considering he’s been pitching in the PCL

      1. On The Farm

I agree and I have high hopes (relative to their caliber of player) for both Raley and Rusin. I think one will turn into a decent reliever and the other will be a good 4 more likely 5 starter.

Not every pitcher needs to be a stud by 25, some guys take a little bit longer to figure it out.

  11. Rebuilding

Trading partners update: Erlin only goes 3.2 for the Padres and Grimm is mounting his 5+ ERA for the Rangers by giving a few early runs. If be surprised if the Rangers aren’t calling us hourly

      1. Rebuilding

Oswalt getting knocked around early for the Rockies

  12. Die hard

So Bryant is not going to sign? I thought was a done deal.. If so why the delay? Is it going to take trading Valbuena to convince the kid that he will break camp with the varsity next spring?

    1. DarthHater

    2. Jp3

      Sources??? Never mind…

      1. Die hard

Pro Sports Daily say that Dodgers are looking for 3B and 2B… Valbuena can play either … One deal is usually contingent on another … He could already be traded but not announced … If so then Bryant can envision no competition in way to start next year as he likely feels his college yrs were same as AA ball

        1. Carew

Where bryant is placed is ultimately up to the FO, not him. The FO may just try a september call-up and an invite to spring training. And he probably wouldn’t make it out of spring training

  13. Mike Taylor (no relation)

If Garza goes to the highest bidder and that leaves the Rangers out in the cold, they might pony up the same kind of package for Carlos Villanueva.

  14. DocPeterWimsey

Wow, I spend the day deep in analyses and the Cubs go a bit haywire. For moment, I was terrified that I’d worked for an entire month. (Usually the smell tips me off after a week or two.)

Great coverage, Brett: you must have been updating every hour! AND you got Keith Law! (I love reading his stuff: he manages to be humorous while being serious, which is a great trait in the sports world.)

Now, if you really want to be a hero, then identify the Giants’ mole who got Marmol to the Dodgers….. ;-)

    1. DocPeterWimsey

That should read “multiple times” every hour. (It’s the old “Should I write A or B and then you write a hybrid that isn’t either A or B…..)

  15. willis

Haha that didn’t take long. Already getting HRs launched off of him. This ain’t going to be a pretty start.

  16. Crockett

    Rusin. Is. Horrible.

  17. Required

Rusin picking up right where he left off.

  18. Carew

Rusin gives the vibe of not wanting to be there. Plus he has no velocity, no movement, and to my eye, is tipping his pitches bad.

    1. willis

Yes, yes, and yes. Not to mention he was thrown into this shit at the last second scooting over two time zones pitching against a good team. The kid is a career minor leaguer like others have said. Just can’t fool anyone at this level. He got belted around last year and will again this year. He just doesn’t have what it takes.

  19. Crockett

Can someone link me to Luke’s prospects list from the beginning of the year?

  20. CBP

    Soriano is on fire!!

  21. Jeffery D.

Am I the only one that thinks Villanueva looks like David Blaine?

  22. William

It’s pretty bad when two of your players collide and your manager has to fight back laughter. You can tell by his expression that he wanted to so badly.

  23. William

I will admit it was pretty hilarious since no one was injured.

  24. willis

Welp, I’m impressed with a 7-5 game at this point. Villanueva did a good job in relief of Rusin.

  25. mudge

Nice to see Soriano hitting. I thought he was about cooked. Hope he gets his 400 homers.

  26. Rebuilding

Parker with another really nice inning. I hope he gets a chance to close when Gregg is moved

    1. willis

      I heart him.

      1. Rebuilding

I didn’t realize he was coming out for a 2nd inning. Hope I didn’t jinx him

  27. OregonCubsFan

On the radio they announced that the Cubs have signed Jiminez but waiting for confirmation. Are you still there Brett or did you go to bed? Do you have anything?

    1. Rebuilding

Everyone is reporting it as done. I think WGN just meant they are waiting to hear official confirmation from the Cubs

  28. willis

    Jesus Christ…Navarro just hits.

    1. toot

I wouldn’t get too excited. I remember the same rhetoric when Soto was hitting. We all know how that panned.

  29. Required

    Navarro Ed infuego!!

  30. specialk5595

    mlbtraderumors reporting cubs sign jimenez
