ryan sweeney cubsDid I get it all?

Together with the flurry of trades and signings today, the Cubs necessarily made a number of roster moves to accommodate all of those moves.

Chris Rusin – recently named a PCL All-Star – was called up from AAA Iowa, and he’ll start in now-departed Scott Feldman’s spot tonight in Oakland. The 26-year-old Rusin currently sports a 3.27 ERA (nice for the PCL) over 110 innings at Iowa, with a 2.86 K/BB ratio.

Dave Sappelt was also called up from Iowa, and he’ll slide onto the big league bench, and into the outfield rotation.

That move was partly animated by the Cubs’ decision to place Ryan Sweeney on the 60-day disabled list with his broken rib. With original estimates of a four to six week recovery time (plus a little rehab stint), this is definitely now on the pessimistic side of things. It’s a real bummer for Sweeney, who now won’t be eligible to return until the end of August.

Placing Sweeney on the 60-day opens up a currently unused spot on the 40-man roster, if my math is right (and, after a day like today, it may very well not be). So, it looks like the 40-man stands at 39. (UPDATE: The official release from the Cubs says that, at the end of today’s moves, the 40-man stands at 40. Not sure what I’m missing, but I trust the Cubs on this one.)

Acquired Orioles pitcher Jake Arrieta was immediately optioned to AAA Iowa, where he’ll continue to start for now.

Acquired pitchers Pedro Strop and Matt Guerrier are expected to join the Cubs’ bullpen at some point this week. If true, that’s going to force the Cubs to bump two current relievers out. Maybe Rule 5 pick Hector Rondon finally takes a little hiatus? Maybe the Cubs decide to move on from Shawn Camp? Maybe the Cubs use Rusin as a spot starter tonight and then send him back down, allowing Carlos Villanueva to slide back into the rotation if he can get stretched out in time? Maybe the Cubs try to stash Henry Rodriguez?

We’ll see, but something will have to give.

I vote to end the Camp experiment. Also brett you could just have another trade to open up a spot

    • Timothy Scarbrough

I feel like another trade is coming.

      • http://bleachernation.com someday…2015?

I feel like a Cubs Padres deal is inevitable and possibly imminent.

        • nkniacc13

Idk about that as the Pads have asked cubs about Arrieta and were told that cubs want to hold on to him right now

          • http://bleachernation.com someday…2015?

True, but the Pads were also said to have interest in Garza. Taking Arrieta off the market leaves them with Garza.(going off this rumor – http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/06/padres-notes-arrieta-garza-bullpen.html)

We already know Jed and Theo like dealing with their former teams. We also know the Padres system is stacked with pitching. It’s a good fit. It’s just about finding the right deal.

            • Serious Cubs Fan

Rockies really like Arrieta too. So they are going to probably turning their attention to the Nolasco(really not that good in my opinion), or their will be increased interest in Garza.

          • Cyranojoe

Negotiating tactic. I like hearing them play hardball.

  • mak

Between Strop, Guerrier, Camp, Rondon and Rodriguez, their bullpen is made entirely up from projects. I’m assuming Camp is the first one gone, but most of these guys are garbage.

    • Featherstone

Last I recall Villanueva, Russel, and Gregg weren’t prospects, but yeah there are a lot of prospects. With this being a lost season why not?

      • Scotti

ProJects not proSpects. As in reclamation projects. Russell and Villanueva still don’t qualify as projects. Russell is legit and Villanueva has always been marginal–never really good and never really bad.

    • Eternal Pessimist

Camp isn’t really a project, but a placeholder.

  • Corey

I don’t think the Rusin calling up is temporay, if that was true, why even bring him up? Why not just let Villa start tonight?

    • nkniacc13

apparently they want to stetch out Vill but he is no where near ready to start.

      • Corey

        Ohhh, okay.

    • willis

I’d guess because he pitched Sunday (I think) and they’d have to piggy back the shit out of a start, with bullpen arms that are not good. Rusin probably is the right move for now, then slip Villanueva back into rotation.

      • Corey

Okay, thanks for that. Makes much more sense.

  • willis

Yeah hopefully this shows Camp the door once the other two arms are ready.

But ick to Sappelt. I can’t stand him or his twitter crap. Plus he’s not good. Really sucks about Sweeney because he was playing fine D, hitting like crazy and had great hair. Definitely makes the team weaker with a Sappelt addition and Sweeney subtraction.

  • Dynastyin2017

Hey Brett, you know what would make this day even more fun?…an internetz rumor that Kris Bryant won’t sign….(no, I am NOT starting said rumor)

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      I would burst.

  • JoshO

With what the Cubs are trying to do, keeping Camp around solves nothing. He’s been awful out there. He’s was good last year but his luck and arm have run out. Time for him to go bye bye. And I would bet CV goes back to the rotation or Rondon takes a 2 week hiatus until CV can get stretched back out. I don’t think the cubs would take the chance on Rodriguez getting claimed

  • ABK

    Busy day, Brett? ;-)

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Easily as busy as the middle of a Trade Deadline Blogathon. Easily. Maybe even busier than everything but the final few hours last year.

  • Oswego chris

Because Villanueva is not ready to start…

    Hope Arrieta gets here soon…

  • nkniacc13

    Arrieta is going to Iowa.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

“Acquired Orioles pitcher Jake Arrieta was immediately optioned to AAA Iowa, where he’ll continue to start for now.”

  • EricR

I hope the peripherals are better than the baseball cards for these guys….

  • nkniacc13

If they don’t move Garza soon they are going to have a rotation nightmare in Iowa as well if they put Vill in the ChC roation

  • Corey

Hey Brett, tonight are you gonna do a recap of the day’s madness? I can’t help but feel I’m missing stuff with all these posts.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Yup. Definitely.

But there’s still at least one more big, awesome piece coming …

      • bryan

        matt Garza dealt?!

        • Timmy

          for carlos mármol

          • Cyranojoe

            Now *that* was funny.

      • Corey

Well, there goes any plans for tonight, ha!

      • Cyranojoe

Apparently Brett wants us all to reload BN.com a trillion times between now and tomorrow.

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Luke

          That’s how I read it.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

        • Scott

What were you really going to do anyways?

  • MikeW

As long as Parker doesn’t get optioned out – I’m sure it will be fine

  • cerambam

Did the Padres try to get Arrieta from the Cubs or Orioles. The tweet Jon Heyman is confusing.

    • nkniacc13

      both

      • cerambam

Well, I know that they were trying to get him from the Orioles originally. What I meant is did Heyman’s tweet mean that the Padres called the cubs after they officially picked up Arietta?

        • nkniacc13

          yes

  • Zogie

to clear up the 40-man roster thing. We started with 40. Marmol was not on the 40-man (DFA). So we lose Clevenger, Feldman and Sweeney (60-day DL) while gaining Arrieta, Strop, and Guerrier. There you go 40 players on the 40 man

  • mdavis

40 man: off are Feldman, Clevenger, Sweeney (DL).

    Added: Arrieta, Strop, Guerria.

The confusion maybe was counting Marmol again, but he was already off after being DFA?

    Excellent work today Brett!

  • Steve

Regarding the 40-man roster issure: Cubs added Guerrier, Strop, and Arrieta to the 40-man while removing Feldman, Clevenger, and Sweeney. Marmol had already been DFA’d off the 40-man, so Sweeney’s spot was necessary to add Guerrier.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

You and mdavis were precisely right – hadn’t accounted for Marmol having already been off the 40-man, and Guerrier then added today after that (not a one for one swap).

  • cubchymyst

Arrieta is definitely staying down in Iowa for a little while. He needs 73 days to be eligible for free agency in 2016 instead of 2017 and only 53 for super 2 status according to MLBtraderumors.

    • caryatid62

2017? The guy would be 31 by that point.

Man…this just reminds me that baseball’s arbitration rules make REALLY cashing in (in the way that mediocre to slightly-above-average NBA players do, for example) really difficult.

    • Scott

This is insightful. I was wonder what the angle was for sending him to Iowa.

  • Steve

Well damn, I guess 2 others were figuring it out at the same time I was.

    • mdavis

      great minds.

  • Kenster

I figured Rusin will be sent back down after tonight hopefully giving Villanueva enough time to stretch out by next week or atleast start. So with that opening up one spot the other would DFA’ing Camp. Henry Rodriguez hasnt had enough time to prove himself yet. If the FO is too stubborn to DFA Camp then hopefully Rondon windes up on the DL.

And Brett yes it’s at 40 if the Cubs add Arrieta if not I believe its 39

  • cubsin

Brett, you’re gonna regret promising us up to 36 hours of non-stop blogging at the trade deadline. Garza will be long gone by then, and there’s a good chance that the remaining trade candidates (Villanueva, DeJesus, Schierholtz) will either be traded or off the table by July 30.

    • Cyranojoe

Not at all, then he’ll sit back, relax with a cold one, and write ridiculously false and funny TRADR00MROOORZ!!!

  • In Theo We Trust

Villanueva needs his mustache to grow back before he can start again,

  • DarthHater

@FacebookCubs Anyone trading for Marmol needs to see a physiatrist, didn’t think any team was that crazy…

    Gotta love it

  • nkniacc13

Feldman deal may have made Miami lower its asking price on Nolasco

  • http://Bleachernation Lou Brock

Anybody else mention Arrieta’s last start on June 27th versus Columbus , Indians AAA affiliate was a gem ? 7 innings, 1 hit with 4 BB , and 10 K’s.

    • nkniacc13

start before that was good as well I believe

  • fromthemitten

start villanueva to showcase him as a starter!

  • True(ly) Blue

Brett, Thanks for the great reporting. I’ll bet that it was as much fun for you to write as it was for us BNer’s to read. I was checking Bleacher Nation every 15 minutes today. More!! More!! I know that some are saying that the Feldman trade was not a good enough return but 2 pitchers who already have major league experience seems better to me than 2 AA prospect pitchers.

  • http://Bleachernation Lou Brock

Now trade Garza and Gregg to Bosox for LHP Owens, RHP Ranaudo, INF Cecchini.

  • http://Bleachernation Lou Brock

Schierholtz to Pirates for RHP Glasnow. Arrieta to Padres for C Kral, and RHP Wisler.

  • Serious Cubs Fan

Anyone think we could package Arrieta in a bigger deal? Because quite a few teams had interest in Arrieta.
