Pre-Gamin’: Cardinals v. Cubs (7:05 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, etc.

wrigley field from right bleachersIf the Cubs were competitive this year, tonight’s game would be absolutely unbelieveable. Sunday night on ESPN. Wrigley Field. Last game of the first half. Two All-Stars facing each other on the mound. And it’s Cubs/Cards, with the Cubs going for a series win in four.

Just typing that out … it’s still pretty awesome, even if the Cubs are in the middle of a sell-off.

Game Info

In AAA Jake Arrieta pitched 6 strong innings, he only gave up 1 run, 3 hits, 1 walk, while striking out 9.

    1. KidCubbie

I hope he can figure it out and be a piece of the puzzle.

  2. CharMcCar

Chris Archer dominated in a 4-hit shutout today. Scooped him in fantasy this morning, win. Interesting to reflect on the original Garza trade. We really just didn’t need him.

  3. mudge

What a steal if both Strop and Arrieta work out.

    1. Rebuilding

Get used to it. We have 2 very good GMs. Hoyer is sort of a forgotten man, but what he did in San Diego was fantastic. These guys make moves for a reason. Strop alone was worth Feldman. Arrieta has had bouts of inconsistency mixed in with dominant performances in the AL East. I bet they saw something on tape that they think they can correct

  4. Andrew kirk

Funny espn has Wellington Castillo starting at short tonight on their web site

    1. Mark S

      Trade value.

  5. dumbledoresacubsfan

At the game with my friend, a Cardinals fan. Lets get this win right here to make the trip back to Tennessee tomorrow that much more sweet!

  6. Josh t

The phillies are in the market for a center fielder. If Dejesus proves he’s healthy, he could be an interesting trade target

    1. Ben

I really want the Diekman kid out of their bull pen. A touch wild, but he throws 98 and has a 3/4 arm slot. If he can find his control he is nasty.

  7. fromthemitten

any idea who is calling the game on ESPN?

  8. Corey

Feldman picked a gem today for the Orioles. Glad to see him having success.

  9. Lou Brock

Four pitchers from 2013 draft pitched combined 8 shutout innings today for Boise. Zastryzny, Wilson, Godley & Frazier . Nice job guys and nice job scouting dept.

  10. EB

I’ll listen on the radio. I don’t support ESPN and their biased agenda.

    1. Rebuilding

It is the EASTERN sports programming network for a reason. I really hope someone can cut into their monopoly at some point

      1. Rebuilding

NBC and Fox really seem to be trying to throw money at it. Who knows if that will help

        1. Rebuilding

Hopefully they won’t have Cafardo on saying the Cubs would be silly not to take Lackey’s contract for Garza

        2. YourResidentJag

Yeah, FoxSports 1 comes out in August–so we’ll see how that goes.

          1. Luke

Fox currently has the single worst national baseball broadcast team I’ve ever had the disgust of listening to. I’m not optimistic.

    2. EB

I just wish people would join me in a boycott and it would become a mass boycott.

      1. EB

        Doubtful though. Just wishful thinking.

  11. UCF

F the ESPN announcers. One day off for Castro after playing essentially every game for three years…apparently that is a major “benching”. What a joke. Any body else gets a day off and it would never be called being benched.

    1. wvcubsfan

“any body else” probably wasn’t struggling as bad as Castro before their day off.

Plus “benching” will make more listeners pat attention to what’s being said than “day off”.

      1. UCF

Struggling or not, it was clearly not a benching. Saying benching has a different connotation than giving somebody a day off. If your into misleading broadcasters so that the game is a little more interesting, then I guess that is great for you. I’d rather just hear the truth.

        1. wvcubsfan

          You mean like ESPN???

  12. Drew7

How many times can these jagloads call Castro’s day-off a ,”benching”.

    1. YourResidentJag

Didn’t Herschiser once say that Robin Ventura presence also lights up a room? Ventura has one of the most mundane personalities. I wouldn’t take too much stock into what the suits from ESPN say about anything, especially their baseball guys.

      1. DaveY

Compared to Hershiser, Ventura does light up a room. Orel is one of the most clean cut, honest, church going types in baseball. Ventura isn’t so much mundane as southern california laid back and easy going.

        1. YourResidentJag

True but light up a room. Really?

      2. Hansman1982

I no longer put much stock in ANYTHING tey say about any sport. If you listen, they say the same things in basketball, football and the spelling bee as they do for baseball.

  13. X the Cubs Fan

    Castro triples.

  14. Clark Addison

The network broadcasters treat the Cubs as though they were the Washington Generals.

    1. Timmy

yeah because the team is a joke now. everyone makes fun of us for not even trying to put together a good team and then having a fire sale every year. you guys gotta get mad at the right people. good ol timmy here is just trying to paint an accurate picture. i am in no way “goating”.

      1. notcubbiewubbie

get mad at the evil rickett’s family.

      2. Rcleven

Who is everyone? Who the hell cares what other people are saying. The Cubs are 1.5 years into a new administration. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Have some patience. We have improved and still have some growing to do.

        1. frank

Agreed–the front office was very clear about this process taking some time. A year and a half is simply not enough time.

          1. Timmy

these comments i accept. and i do. i just don’t see why not trying to complete for the time it takes to complete an entire college and master’s degree is part of this picture. it seems disingenuous at best.

            1. Timmy

              *compete

              1. frank

Well, a bachelors and a masters takes about 6 years to complete–7 if you go by today’s averages. I think that if this team is not competitive well before that 6-7 year time frame is up, there will be a lot of angry fans.

              2. Jason Powers

Maybe they know things you don’t.

You probably always see things suspiciously, whether or not there is any validation to your seemingly veritable claims. And any evidence you see, you will selectively pick out that which supports your strident and foregone conclusions. And no one, no matter how logical, or able to see the gray areas of such things, will convince you otherwise.

So, in fact, you probably will never be satisfied. The Cubs have been a disappointment for longer than you’ve been alive, I suspect, unless you are 111 years old – I assume it takes until 6 years old to form a rational fan liking of said team.

I guess will know in the time it takes to get a BS and MBA. But if the Cubs do not win the WS by 2016, it will be because of the current actions, that you find repulsive, and ‘disingenuous’. But again, if they just so happened to win the world series, utilizing their pronounced FO skills, it will be because of other evidence to the contrary you see that support only your ideas, and not their perceivable decision-making abilities.

And the “I told you so” rant will be well-written and thoroughly rehearsed for the message board crowd.

                Outstanding.

                1. Timmy

i was never disappointed until the past year, actually. if you lose you lose, and the cubs embodied lovable losers. now we embody “losing by design because the owners hate baseball”. it really gets under my skin that we’d lose as “schtick” so the rich can get richer.

                  1. AlwaysNextYear

I stopped listening to you after you said this team need more reliable pitchers who eat up innings. Timmy curious If you know what quality starts are. If not its what you described that you wanted. Well curious if you knew the Cubs are #1 in baseball in quality starts.

                    1. Timmy

most of my comments are about batting

                    2. AlwaysNextYear

Nice excuse. Seems to me you were proven to be a fool and now are running with your tail between your legs like a coward. Well I’m done making you look stupid for the day maybe we can do this tomorrow. Have a nice night.

                    3. TWC

He’s just lying. Because that’s what he does.

                    4. MichiganGoat

                      ^^^THIS^^^

                    5. hansman1982

                      You misspelled baiting

                    6. Timmy

hold on now, do you want me to concede that the pitching staff is somehow better than other pitching staffs? because their records, win/loss ratios, WARs, and WHIPs are all average to good, but outside of wood none of them complete all that well with ‘winning’ teams. you guys phish for insults of players, and you’ll notice that i NEVER insult the players, just bad management decisions.

the problem is that you guys don’t respect players who work hard every day and you over exaggerate backroom dealings as more important than sportsmanship. you can’t have it both ways – if i say the batting lineup needs insane amounts of work that’s not a ‘lie’. but not picking on pitchers doesn’t amount to some kind of backpedaling.

                    7. hansman1982

                      again, you misspelled:

“This is a baiting and dumb comment.”

                    8. Timmy

i am waiting for my meme of the moment from darth, which twc will call trolling, goat will call baiting, hansman will misspell some words, and die hard will say some nugget of wisdom that makes rebuilding angry

                  2. Timmy

i see that you guys are trying to make me blow my top by dismissing everything outright. but i also notice that out listen to everything i say because i offer a genuine counterpoint to the ‘official press releases’ that the team puts out. and i care about the players, which is rare on this board. michigangoat doesn’t even know who’s on the roster, just who we might trade for.

                    1. hansman1982

                      again, you misspelled:

“This is a baiting and dumb comment.”

                    2. TWC

“i see that you guys are trying to make me blow ”

Yeah, your comments blow. I agree.

                    3. MichiganGoat

Hans , TWC remember that guy that just baited people constantly, while he asked Mom to get him another Hot Pocket and Monster? Me neither. So what were we talking about?

                    4. hansman1982

Hey Goat, what’s new with you?

Tom, you excited for your paddle boat ride with Tim?

                    5. Cubbie Blues

Do I detect some envy there Joe?

                    6. hansman1982

Noooooo, not at all. I’ll just sit here in the cornfield.

                    7. Timmy

all i wanted was to talk about the cubs but all you guys can talk about is how the team is suing lake view

                    8. Cubbie Blues

I thought we were talking about paddle boating and cornfields.

                    9. hansman1982

We could paddleboat in a pile of corn…

                    10. 70'scub

Why don’t you just follow the White Sox? Since you hate the Cub FO, the ownership and their vision of building a young talented core. I think you would be happier watching and bitching at a team that has old expensive free agents.

                    11. Bric

Thank goodness it’s the all star break. I think we all need a few days off to take a deep breath and cool down because all of this sniping back and forth is starting to make us look like a bunch of Brewer fans. Easy fellas, we’re all Cub fans here.

                  3. Timmy

talking about ‘goating’, twc has never finished a sentence and spends the whole time attacking other fans. why can’t i get you guys to ever have a constructive conversation about how we might improve the team?

                    1. hansman1982

                      I dunno, why can’t you?

Oh yeah, they generally involve multiple comments about how Ricketts is evil or greedy or something…

                    2. AlwaysNextYear

I see people who try but you just bitch about politics and how horrible everything about this team is. Seems you have the problem not others

                    3. Timmy

every day i quote news articles and statistics and try to predict a brighter day, and you guys are like ‘the owners suck so bad’ and start trolling about how the team has bad management. it’s so tiring. i have a hard job all day and i just want to be optimistic and talk about baseball, OK?!

                    4. hansman1982

                      since when?

                    5. Internet Random

TWC writes well. He even knows how to use capital letters, which must seem like an extremely advanced and complex concept to you.

                    6. MichiganGoat

IR not sure who you are responding to? I think your talking to a ghost.

                    7. Jason Powers

Well, Timmy here’s your opportunity to do so: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/mlb/help/jobs.jsp?c_id=chc

See, they are looking for a few good men to put their logical, statistical, scouting, and databasing skills to use.
                      Job #2
I applied. So can you. Takes, maybe 15-30 minutes, depending on how up to date your resume is.

So, you see, the Cubs are looking for talent – and will pay a salary that you can negotiate for.

                      glad to help.

                    8. Internet Random

Talking to a ghost would be interesting… so I don’t think it’s that.

                  4. fromthemitten

                    *cough*ween troll*cough*

  15. Blublud

Javy Baez through 373 PA last year had 20 HR. Through 373 PA this year, he has 20 HR, at higher levels.

    1. baldtaxguy

      Interesting stat, thanks

  16. Clark Addison

Now they are pimping the home run derby. A bogus, non event.

  17. DaveY

When Shierholtz didn’t start yesterday because he was “a little banged up” there was speculation that he might actually might not be hurt but is being saved for a possible trade. I think it’s more likely that Sappelt is being shopped. For what ever reason some team may have more interest in him than Shierholtz. After all, who expected the Hairston deal?

    1. jpeck

I’m sorry, but NOBODY is scouting or looking for Sappelt.

  18. X the Cubs Fan

    Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 24m
Wrote in the column today that the odds of Garza being traded by Fri. are said to be 80-20. TEX could be frontrunners, NL West teams, CLE.

    1. X the Cubs Fan

Doesn’t sound like Blue Jays are as interested as I hoped.

  19. Jason P

8 of the 9 Cardinals in their starting lineup today are homegrown. And I’d be willing to bet most weren’t “top prospects”. Where do they find these guys? Matt Adams, Allan Craig, Pete Kozma, John Jay, Matt Carpenter, etc.

    1. ThompsonLives

      PEDs are awesome.

  20. willis

I’ve been thrilled with Valbuena this year. But that play was insanely stupid. Just pick the ball and eat it. Let Wood go after the next hitter. You can’t just do a stupid donkey dance around the ball and pray it goes foul.

  21. Clark Addison

Well, they finally dug out the 1908 reference.

  22. Trueblue

Valbuena- what the heck was that? Love players that bat .230 and do plays like that.

  23. someday...2015?

It’s that type of moment that makes me crave a playoff run. Gotta love the electricity of the crowd!

    1. Trueblue

I’m at the game tonight. I thought he was going to get a curtain call. I personally needed a series like this to give me hope and refresh my memory that I do love this team still.

  24. MichiganGoat

Hey Hans it’s good- I might go fishing tomorrow since I have way too much bait for some reason?

  25. DaveY

That was a nice effort by Castro but he showed his inexperience on that play. When you run straight back for a fly ball you don’t tip your head straight up to look for the ball. You turn your head sideways and look up. That way you can run faster for the ball. Outfielders do this routinely.

  26. Rich

    Inexperience ?? Really?
    Don’t see that

    1. DaveY

      On that play, definitely.

  27. MichiganGoat

Hey Hans have you heard old man Ricketts had PAC that was anti-Obama? Because I swear it happened like a year ago and was covered extensive on this site called BleacherNation. And did you know that Tom and the Owners of the Cubs had nothing to do with it? Oh and one of the Ricketts is a outspoken member of the GLBT community and supports many charities? Because in a basement somewhere a child is eating a hot pocket and going all wiki leaks with some knowledge.

Thought you might like to know.

    1. Timmy

nice one. ok good talking dudes see you tomorrow. my hot pockets call.

      1. Timmy

i’ve got some great material about mike greenwell, i’ll see you guys then

    2. hansman1982

ZOMG! We should totally discuss that right now because it matters. Or maybe I should engage someone on the site in a year-long battle-royale about how to improve the Cubs and the short-term direction they took.

  28. Rich

Hard to compare n infielder to an outfielder
And how many plays occurr like that
Just asking so the 1 play a month in which that occurs this professional athlete now has experience

    1. DaveY

Yes, infielders don’t often have to make that play but Castro should know how to do it. Either the Cubs minor league coaches didn’t teach him right or he didn’t remember.

  29. Mush

Anybody else think Sveum is bad in game manager? Why not let Strop hit after you take lead? Guerrier should only pitch in games we are down. He is Camp with 5 more mph.

  30. Patrick G

    I’m having Assman withdrawals already
