wrigley field from right bleachersIf the Cubs were competitive this year, tonight’s game would be absolutely unbelieveable. Sunday night on ESPN. Wrigley Field. Last game of the first half. Two All-Stars facing each other on the mound. And it’s Cubs/Cards, with the Cubs going for a series win in four.

Just typing that out … it’s still pretty awesome, even if the Cubs are in the middle of a sell-off.

That’s how you go after a ball over your head.

  • WI Jeff

At the game. Love to hAve jumbo from to replay the bogusevic catch of Molina shot to cf.

    • DaveY

Yeah, tough to see unless you are right on the wall.

  • http://bleachernation.com someday…2015?

    They had him.

  • Paul AssenmachWAR

If Castro had been the one who cut the ball off, people would be calling for his head. Rizzo can’t get a free pass.

    • UCF

+1. Castro would be getting “benched” again.

  • DaveY

That was a great relay from Castro… and a brain cramp by Rizzo.

  • Tim

I wonder if the cubs will still get ripped from espn broadcasters constantly when they are good again

    • DaveY

When the Cubs are good they will talk about 100+ years how close will the Cubs get to world series before they blow it.

  • DaveY

Castro is feeling the pressure, he’s chewing that gum at 100 mph.

  • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

    That is just the bellyfire.

  • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

No, because there will be less to rip?

  • TheMagicMan

So if a trade doesn’t get done in the next half hour, it’s not happening till Thursday at the earliest

    • Crockett

Well, the trade can occur. The announcement cannot.

  • BT

Pretty sure the Cubs were paid to throw this game.

  • ThompsonLives

Who decided Dave Sappelt had any value whatsoever as a major-leaguer?

  • ssckelley

    Gregg is not fooling anybody

    • http://bleachernation.com someday…2015?

      Not at all.

      • Earl Cunningham

Kevin Gregg is turning back into Kevin Gregg.

        • BT

In fairness, closers in non-closing situations tend to suck balls. I have no idea why, but it happens with alarming regularity.

  • ssckelley

    This game in Saint Louis?

  • Trueblue

Ok, the cardinals fans are rocking and cheering Yadi like its their home game and sure enough three run shot. Now their cheering MVP. Hate them

  • dynasty someday (please god)

Yea, now theres the kevin gregg i remember

  • Chris

And there goes Gregg’s trade value.

  • dynasty someday (please god)

Sorry not trying to be negative but sheesh

  • Clark Addison

The Cubs didn’t deserve to win this one.

  • ugh

I really hate Molina. We needed to trade Gregg before the wheels fell off. Ouch.

    • http://bleachernation.com someday…2015?

Hate? Despise is more like it.

  • Paul AssenmachWAR

And so it was, that at 10:40 PM central time, on July 14th, Kevin Gregg officially turned back into a pumpkin.

  • Afinch

Ok let’s hear the Garza trade confirmation! I wish. Don’t feel like waiting another few days.

  • Afinch

Can no trade be announced now until Thursday? How does that work?

    • John

From what I heard it can be reported but It cant be official until after the break.

    • TonyP

If a trade is made it will be leaked out I’m sure…

  • http://Bleachernation Lou Brock

That was an ugly end to a badly played and poorly managed game by the Cubs. Sveum pinch hit for Strop after taking the lead with 2 out and no one on base after Barney’s HR – why ? And why use Borbon up who you would use to pinch run or be a defensive replacement later.
Should have let Strop get the seventh inning, not taken him out after pitching to only one batter in the sixth.

  • John

Has anyone one ever wondered if Molina takes ped’s I mean he looks a lot bigger than when he came up. And his numbers just get better as he gets older which is not all that uncommon but with him being a catcher I just dont remember any catcher that has improved numbers from year after year like he does. I really hope when all those names come out on that biogenesis report that some Cardinals are on there. That would make my year.

    • DarthHater

I always thought it was pretty obvious.

  • http://Bleachernation Lou Brock

Also Sveum should have had Wood or someone from the pen drill Carpenter or Molina after they hit Castro.

  • John

Yeah I would have had wood drill someone just for crowding the plate. The Cards were able to hit everything away. The next time the Cubs play the Cards I want to see someone from the Cards hit by a pitch or there going to continue to crowd the plate. Id start off by hitting molina and Craig both of them just lunge out over the plate.

    • http://vdcinc.biz 70’scub

Last series with the Cards, they went spikes high at the Cub NO response!

  • Mike

The Cubs held on to Kevin Gregg too long. Good luck getting anything for him now, other than a bag of potato chips.

    • DarthHater

Yea, if they had just been smart enough to try to trade him yesterday, we have gotten a top prospect for him. smh

    • Hansman1982

      Lays or ruffles?

  • Rooster

Was at the Baker rehab game today. He got shelled in the first. He topped 89 mph but was able to hit 92 in the 3rd. Albert got robbed of extra bases and Vogelbach is just one large dude….like a mini John Kruk. Albert is just one class act of a kid.

  • steve a

Any ideas who takes over closer when gregg goes? An one note two outta four isn’t to bad from the best team in baseball.
