boise hawksYesterday was almost a terrible, terrible day. The All-Star break meant there was no real major league baseball.

It also meant there was no Triple A baseball.

Or Double A baseball.

And thanks to off days, there was no baseball for Daytona, Kane County, or Arizona either.

Thank goodness for the Boise Hawks.

Not only was Boise playing last night, the Hawks brought us a very awesome game. Fantastic pitching. Game tied going into the ninth. A rally. And at the end of it Boise was back to .500.  All in all it was a game well worth following.

Remember, you can listen to every minor league game for free from the homepage of each of the teams.  If you want to listen to Tennessee on Thursday, for instance, just click on Tennessee in the section below at game time and you’ll have a link to the audio feed.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa - Iowa was off yesterday.
Tennessee - Tennessee also had the day off.
Daytona -  Another off day. This was even scheduled and not due to the rains.
Kane County -  Kane County didn’t lose! Ok, so they were off as well.
Boise - Three Hawks pitchers combine for the shutout in this 3-0 win.
Arizona -  Arizona was (you guessed it) off yesterday.

Other News

  • In a move that should come as a surprise to absolutely no one, Matt Loosen has been named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week. All he did was pitch sixteen innings of shutout baseball, including a complete game of both the nine inning and the seven inning (part of a double header) varieties. He struck out thirteen in those games, walked just three, and gave up a total of four hits (all in the second game). That is just about as impressive a week as any pitcher in the organization is likely to have this year.
  • Shawon Dunston has been having a nice year for Boise, but unfortunately the vast majority of us cannot see it happen since Boise is not hooked up to the minor league video service. Thanks to Mike Safford, though, we do have a little video of Dunston taking batting practice.
  • Christian Villanueva will be participating in the Southern League Home Run Derby today.
  • Yasiel Balaguert came out of the Hawks game after just a few innings. As of now I am not sure why.
  • Jp3

Villanueva in the HR derby eh? Isn’t that his one flaw supposedly? That’s almost funny.

  • HackAttack

Luke or anyone – what kind of injury/illness has kept Jacob Hannemann out of action for so long?

    • Kevin F.

He was put on the 7 day DL on July 7, along with Carlos Martinez, with an “undisclosed injury”, per KIVI tv. I can find no later information on him.

      • RoughRiider

I think I remember Hannemann being out with the flu.

  • Le Cubs

Hey Luke an interesting draft pick was that Frazier kid. The only problem is I can only find one good source on him. I was wondering if you could elaborate on him for me a little.

  • Jackalope

Think there’s any chance Dunston will get bumped up to Kane County? Love that he has more BBs than Ks, though I know rosters are pretty crowded.

    • On The Farm

The KC OF is pretty stacked, but if Almora got called up to Daytona in August (which is when I have seen some predict he will), calling up Dunston for a month of August wouldn’t be the worse thing since that is where he will be starting next season.

On the flip side, I could see the FO decide since he is going to be in KC for all/most of next season, they might as well leave him in Bosie. So, while I agree with you I want to see him promoted and if Almora gets promoted he has certainly earned the shot to replace him, but it may be worth it to let him spend the whole successful season in Bosie (a la Vogelbach).

  • Beardface

So, when is Bryant going to be playing at Boise?

    • ssckelley

Nobody knows, not even Bryant. He will start in Arizona, my guess is it depends how rusty he looks. It has been a while since he has been in a game situation.

      • Cubbie Blues

From a discussion Spriggs had with him, it sounded like it wouldn’t be very long. Just long enough to get his legs back under him.

      • Jp3

Couldn’t be that out of shape right? Didn’t he play in the college World Series playoffs? It wasn’t more than a month and a half ago? That could be the busiest Arizona Cubs team ever as far as sales and whatnot.

        • Cubbie Blues

It’s not a matter of being out of shape. It’s getting back into the grove of playing and seeing live pitching. I would love to see him hitting lead-off every inning until he makes it onto one of the regular season teams.

          • MichiganGoat

That and I like to think that Theo wants him to have some training on how to handle interviews, how to conduct themselves (I see a picture of Ian Stewart in the office that reads “Don’t Be A Douchebag Asshat”), as soon as he reports to Boise it will be media city for him and he should have some PR training and preparation.

            • Spriggs

And will maybe get a little of… “and when guys like Spriggs ask you questions, don’t give them any information. You never know what they are going to do with it.”

              • Cubbie Blues

At least you sniped in there before they gave him that little tidbit of wisdom.

                • Spriggs

Haha. I got to Almora early last year too! I wasn’t even 100% sure who they were!

              • MichiganGoat

I’m sure there is a pic of you that reads “DO NOT FEED, HE TALKS TO GOATS”

        • Spriggs

The AZ League games are unique (and very hot – even at 7 pm it’s usually still 100 degrees). Free admission – no ticket sales. No venders. No concessions. No programs. No PA announcer. Practically no fans (maybe about 20 per game tops).

      • MichiganGoat

I’d say there is at least two weeks of orientation like stuff they want him to go through before reporting to Boise. There is no rush right now.

        • Jp3

They want to go over things like watch who you hang out with now, don’t be going to strip clubs every night, you’re a big boy now cashing big boy checks so don’t make a fool out of yourself or our organization…. I hear PacMan jones is speaking at this orientation

        • ssckelley

He has not been in a live game situation since June 2nd. If a player was on the DL for that long they would be sent down (some even to Arizona) to get themselves ready.

  • ssckelley

It seems every day a catcher in the lower levels are getting hits. They must hear the footsteps of Alamo and Remillard. A guy like Rymel who is 23 years old and still playing in lower A must be feeling the pressure to produce.

    • mjhurdle

I think it has more to do with the eventual signing of TWC than anything else.
A guy with TWC’s tools and the ability to play all over the diamond could take over pretty much anywhere, and these guys know that.
Everyone is trying to produce so that they aren’t the one leaving to make room for TWC.

      • Cubbie Blues

His tool shed is full and he has plenty of produce in his greenhouse.

      • Spriggs

But all the dope… and that attitude. You can have him.

  • DReese

Is Matt Loosen still a back of the rotation starter or do you think he might be a number 3?

    • ssckelley

I think we need to see how he does at Tennessee before making that judgment. He has had 2 attempts at that level and has looked horrible. The success he has had in Daytona is nice but until he makes it over the hump in AA then it is tough to even project him anywhere at the MLB level.

  • Jordan Miller

I believe Yasiel Balaguert was pulled from the game because of illness.

Also Jacob Hannemann has been out because of fatigue, remember he played football for BYU so he had Spring Ball, Football Season in the Fall, and Baseball, so he is pretty fatigued and has some minor muscle strains according to Mike Stafford of Boise Hawks Radio.

    • HackAttack

      Thanks for the update J.M.

But something doesn’t smell right about that Hannemann information.

From Professor Parks’ review of the Futures Game… http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=21243

    *Arismendy Alcantara, 2B, Chicago Cubs
He put on one of the better batting practice performances, jumping into the ball and sending ropes up the middle and to his pull side. The swing is balanced and easy, finding the ball and driving it without noisy or complicated bat-speed generators. Basically, he doesn’t sell out for bat speed, he just produces it. He can really hit, and he can really run, and he can field, but the throwing mechanics are a better fit for second, and I think he’s going to excel at that position at the highest level. This looks like the Cubs keystone of the future, and a guy who is a no doubt top 100 prospect in the game right now. He can flat out play.

  • Funn Dave

Thank you, Luke, for the info on how to listen to MiLB games! I had no idea!

Also, suggestion: Since these recaps discuss yesterday’s games, it might be nice to include a short section that lists today’s games, game times, and opponents. I’m sure that info is available elsewhere but it would be nice to have it all conveniently here on the website we’re already reading. Just a thought.
