matt garza cubsHere we go …

Ken Rosenthal reports that Matt Garza will not make his start tonight for the Chicago Cubs as expected. Instead, sources tell him, a deal with the Rangers is “near.” That’s is for details so far, but I expect this to develop in the next few hours.

In case you missed it, the Cubs nearly completed a trade involving Garza on Friday. Although you had to do some dot-connecting to get there, it appeared that the package was Garza and another Cub (possibly James Russell) for third base prospect Mike Olt, infield prospect Luis Sardinas, and pitching prospects C.J. Edwards and Neil Ramirez. A medical issue caught the Cubs’ eye after the exchange of records, and the deal was temporarily held up.

We’ll see if the ultimate package – assuming this deal with the Rangers actually goes down now – is similar.

UPDATE: Jon Heyman also reports that Garza has been scratched for tonight, and a deal with the Rangers is close.

UPDATE 2 (3:59pm CT): Jerry Crasnick isn’t quite hearing the same thing as Heyman and Rosenthal, instead saying only that the talks between the Cubs and Rangers have picked back up. He adds that another involved club tells him that the Rangers are making “another big push” to get a deal done.

UPDATE 3 (4:03pm CT): Oh my – Jeff Passan, who initially reported the “snag” on Friday night, now reports that Garza is going to the Rangers.

UPDATE 4 (4:04pm CT): Buster Olney says a deal with Texas is “close.” They were the “most motivated.”

UPDATE 5 (4:04pm CT): Mike Olt is in the deal, per Jeff Passan.

UPDATE 6 (4:06pm CT): Dave Kaplan says the deal is “being finalized,” but not quite done.

UPDATE 7 (4:07pm CT): Jeff Wilson reports that young Rangers reliever Joe Ortiz could be involved. He’s already having success at the big league level at 22, so it’s fair to wonder if he’s been substituted into the deal, given the Cubs’ concerns about Neil Ramirez (again, per Wilson). Wilson says the Rangers did have health concerns about Garza, for whatever that’s worth.

UPDATE 8 (4:10pm CT): Rosenthal reports that it’s Garza for Olt, C.J. Edwards, and a third player.

UPDATE 9 (4:11pm CT): Passan says it’s actually Olt, Edwards, a third player, AND a player to be named later. Evan Grant reports that he’s heard two versions of the package, with one being Olt/Edwards/Ramirez, and one being Olt/Edwards/Rougned Odor (a very good second base prospects at the lower levels).

UPDATE 10 (4:13pm CT): Kaplan says it’s a done deal, and Garza is a Ranger.

UPDATE 11 (4:16pm CT): Jon Heyman says the deal is done pending medicals, and we know how that can go. Unless the replacement piece has any issues, this is going to happen.

UPDATE 12 (4:23pm CT): Although the Cubs aren’t yet ready to announce the deal, they have identified Chris Rusin as tonight’s starter, according to multiple reports.

UPDATE 13 (4:25pm CT): Jeff Passan reports that the final package includes Major League starter Justin Grimm, making it Garza for Olt/Edwards/Grimm and a PTBNL. If so, that’s a hell of a nice haul (albeit a slightly flawed one) for Garza.

UPDATE 14 (4:27pm CT): Grimm, 24, hasn’t had big league success yet, but he’s the same age as Neil Ramirez and already in the bigs (minor league track record is short and decent for Grimm). That’s a nice substitution right there (I’m assuming that Sardinas was dropped because the “other Cub” was dropped).

UPDATE 15 (4:30pm CT): Passan says it was the A’s involvement that spurred the Rangers to “up the ante,” meaning that those involved believed Grimm is an upgrade from Ramirez. I think I’d agree.

UPDATE 16 (4:34pm CT): Gordon Wittenmyer reports that the PTBNL list *includes* Neil Ramirez. If true, this deal is a huge, huge haul for the Cubs. No one else has said anything about the caliber of players on the PTBNL list, or if it’s contingent on anything (like Justin Grimm’s current forearm soreness becoming something more serious).

UPDATE 17 (4:41pm CT): This might be the last update until this thing goes official. When that happens, and some dust settles, I’ll have more on the prospects involved, and an overall evaluation of the trade. Right now, gut says: very solid return for Garza, and just about what I’d expected all along (top 100ish prospect (Olt), and two organizational top 15s (Grimm and Edwards (yes, I know it’s debatable how high up they are – Edwards is borderline top 100 at this point, and Grimm no longer is technically a prospect)). If that PTBNL ends up being someone like Ramirez, then it goes from solid return to oh-wow-seriously-well-done-borderline-squeal.

2 minutes without an update. You’re slacking off! :)

  • Kygavin

I dont like that they are already moving Bryant to the OF if whats being reported is true

    • Jp3

Sources for this Bryant move to OF?

      • Dylan

        Couple tweets here and there.

Big separation between Bryant in AZ and Olt at triple A. Bryant won’t be any higher than Daytona this year. There is plenty of room for both.

  • http://bleachernation.com someday…2015?

Odor, Sardinas, or Jackson as the third player would make this a nice package.

    • Serious Cubs Fan

Agreed. If the PTBNL ends up being Odor, Sardinas, or Jackson, then this is a great deal

  • Jp3

Wow, can’t believe you are buying this as a certainty yet Brett…. The medical a will have the last day in this😝

  • ABK

    who is pitching tonight?

    • Dylan

Maybe Rusin. He’s supposed to start in Iowa tonight.

  • figgelbert

It was reported the Cubs were going to flip Olt to the Yankees, or Philadelphia which makes sense so they can deal M,Young

    • nkniacc13

If Oritz is in deal I just have to think that this means Russell and an IF Olt, Valbuena or Barney are also on the move

    • Matt

Why would the cubs trade Olt for Michael Young? That makes zero sense.

      • Dale’s Ear

They wouldn’t, I think he meant the Phillies would have Olt so then they would be free to trade Young to anyone

        • figgelbert

Thanks for helping make what i wrote make sense.
That was reported when the first deal was going down.
          Might of been Rosenthal

      • jpeck

No, that would give the other team the flexibility to deal Young.

      • JOE

I think he meant that the Phils would then be willing to deal M. Young elsewhere (not to the Cubs in exchange for Olt) but I could be mistaken. Not saying that I like the idea of flipping Olt right away, but that’s my understanding.

        • CubsFaninMS

I believe the front office would have no interest in buying low then selling low. They’d want to increase his stock value before doing that. At his age, though, the only way to do that is to play him in the MLB. I smell a Barney or Valbuena trade up and coming. We will see.

      • figgelbert

No,it was reported the Cubs would swap Olt to the Yankees or Phillies.
The Phillies then could trade Young. The red sox and other teams are interested in Young. And have Olt as their 3b
The Yankees need to replace AROD AND Youk so thats their fit
Just something reported by the talking heads on twitter

      • Jim L.

The Cubs wouldn’t take Young, the Phillies would be free to trade him to another team IF they acquired Olt.

      • Jason

It was trading Olt to the Phillies so THEY can trade Michael Young, not the Cubs trading for Young.

    • Serious Cubs Fan

If we could flip Olt to another team for a nice pitching prospect, that be pretty nice

  • Dylan

LHP Chris Rusin will start for #Cubs Monday vs #DBacks

            • http://cubsdailyrecaps.blogspot.com Jason P

Very true, neither is Raley. Hopefully Baker gets here soon. Too bad Cabrera seems to have reached his innings limit.

  • chirogerg

If Sardinas is no longer included, does that mean he was the medical snag in the original deal/why is he not part of the package anymore?

    • JOE

It could be more due to the fact that another Cub (i.e. Russell) is no longer included

      • Mr. B. Patient

Or the player not yet announced is significantly better than Sardinas.

    • Rebuilding

He may also be the PTBNL dependent on whether Garza stays healthy the rest of the season

    • gcheezpuff

Maybe, but maybe not. Russell was originally speculated as part of the deal and now mention now. It could be that they couldn’t agree on a single player that made the original deal work so they both Russell and Sardinas and focused on just the return for Garza.

  • X the Cubs Fan

LHP Chris Rusin will start tonight instead of Garza for #Cubs.

  • macpete22

    Rusin is pitching tonight

  • Kyle

Front office held out as long as they possibly could to try to get a killer deal, but it just wasn’t there.

This is a meh return unless you like Olt (and you shouldn’t, so don’t). Not going to riot in the streets over it, but it did not live up to the hope we had in ST last year of a Garza trade.

    • Matt

Unless you’re a scout…you have no idea the kind of return this deal brings.

      • YourResidentJag

His BB/SO ratio isn’t solid, though. Don’t have to be a scout.

        • Matt

He’s also in A ball. He has a higher SO/BB ratio that Justin Masterson when he was in A ball. Give him time.

          • YourResidentJag

            Huh?

      • Kyle

I am a scout. The best one ever.

    • willis

I agree with this. Edwards could be a reliever some day, Olt is damaged as hell, could turn around but right now it’s ugly. Have to wait and see who the two others are right now but this is hardly anything to celebrate.

    • cubspong

Depends on who the third player is. Although it is unlikely it is any kind of centerpiece, we can hope it’s someone good.

    • Edwin

I think it’s nice trade. I like Olt.

    • caryatid62

If the Cubs had traded Garza to the Rangers in the Spring of 2012, his value would have been so high that they might have been able to get a player ranked as highly as, say, Mike Olt.

(just a little commentary on the fluid values of prospects)

  • Joey

        • YourResidentJag

Still don’t like him. Plus already injured. Would have preferred Odor….

          • Njriv

We don’t even know for sure if Odor was even on the table. Just rumors.

    • Rebuilding

If true, we got an arm that was in the major leagues at least. Yuck

    • Serious Cubs Fan

Not a fan of Grimm either. That PTBNL better be a Sardinas, Odor, or Luke Jackon

    • JBarnes

Grimm could turn out to be a stud. Good pick up as the “3rd or 4th” player in deal.

  • Serious Cubs Fan

Damn its too bad the deal didn’t include Sardinas… far superior prospect compared to Odor (even though Odor is good though)

    • JOE

Yeah, but it’s not like Odor stinks or anything… sorry I couldn’t help myself

      • Serious Cubs Fan

Yeah Odor’s good…but Sardinas was included in the original deal so idk. Just a little disappointed

    • Mr. B. Patient

Sardinas also fits an organizational need better than Odor.

      • Serious Cubs Fan

Plus Sardinas plays a much more premium position at SS then Odor at 2nd

  • rbreeze

Maybe we trade Olt and/or others to Yankees or Phillies for a better package deal?

  • CubsFaninMS

Carrie Muskat reports that, according to Fox Sports, Garza has been traded for Olt and Edwards.

If this is true, I’m okay with that. Russell may not bring back a Marshall-like return by himself, but it will be a good return. Scheirholtz and Soriano alone can be bring back a good return too.

My guess is that, from all of the rumors going around, the Cubs wanted Sardinas and Ramirez included if they included Russell. Because they were considered with the health of Ramirez, they tried to replace him with another player that the Rangers were not willing to part with. So the Cubs removed the Russell card from the table and settled for a 1/2 player trade.

Then again, all of this may not matter if Fox Sports is not right. We will see.

    • Rcleven

Ramirez has been named in the PTBNL category among three others(unnamed).

  • Serious Cubs Fan

Bruce levine says 3rd player will be a pitcher…hopefully its not Ramirez or is a better pitcher then Ramirez

  • http://cubsdailyrecaps.blogspot.com Jason P

Not a bad deal. Maybe not the huge haul some were hoping for, but acceptable nonetheless. Funny enough, there have been mostly negative reactions from both Rangers and Cubs fans… perhaps Rangers fans remember how mediocre/bad Dempster was for them last year. But Garza’s a different pitcher, and I think they’ll warm up to the trade pretty quickly. Or maybe they — like every other fan-base — simply over-value their own prospects.

  • Rizzofanclub

I really hope the deal is for Olt, Odor, and Edwards. I know the Cubs really do not need more position prospects but I really like everything that I am reading about Odor (not to mention a pretty cool name.)

  • Joey

Mike Olt, C.J. Edwards, Justin Grimm, PTBNL for Garza according to Passan

    • Serious Cubs Fan

Grimm…really? That PTBNL better be pretty good player. Not a fan of Grimm

      • Kyle

One of the PSD guys said the PTBNL is from a list of actual prospects if the Rangers either win the WS or re-sign Garza, otherwise it’s a list of filler.

        • Spriggs

Prolly small chance of either of those happening. Something tells me Garza won’t like pitching there.

      • Spriggs

Yep Grimm leaves a lot to be desired. Couldn’t hold a spot in the TX rotation and was sent to the pen this year. 24 year old 2010 5th rounder. Big righty. Minor league stats don’t look too bad. About 235 Ks in about 280 innings with about 80 walks and a whip of around 1.2 (in the minors).

        • wvcubsfan

That sounds a whole lot like what he have in the pen and better than what we have at AAA. Doesn’t’ seem too bad for 2 months of Garza.

Justin Grimm sounds like he’s the 3rd player. Not sure I’m giddy over this trade.

  • nkniacc13

You are getting 2 top 100 prospects in Olt and Edwards sure both have issues. If it is Oritz then they get a LHRP which allows them to move Russell who with his control could bring back a Marshal package and you may have a 4th player

  • Serious Cubs Fan

Bruce Levine says on ESPN 1000 that Mike Olt will start in the bigs. I hope to god he’s wrong. He has really struggled in AAA, he’s not ready

    • Corey

      Where? 3rd?

    • Jp3

Does he mean now or in the future? Who knows what he’ll be in a year from now but yeah if he’s hitting 8th in Round Rock’s lineup I don’t think he’s ready either.

    • Mr. B. Patient

That’s gotta mean he’s starting, right? That’s gotta mean people are asking for Valbuena or Barney, right? There’s no way you bring Olt up to sit on the bench.
