Agreed Brett if Shark is on you have to like the chances

  2. spatstrike

Hey guys, I’m new here so can somebody explain to me how stats like ERA+ , FIP, and any other real important (but not so commonly known) stats work?
The incentive is that next time I post something on here, I won’t look like an idiot.

    1. Cory

Rather then explaining it if your browse on over to fangraphs they give detailed explanations of all the hitting and pitching metrics. That would probably be the easiest way for you to go through at your own pace and get a look at not just the 2 you have mentioned , but also anything else you maybe interested in.

    2. MichiganGoat

Same as was said spend time reading through Fangraphs… and watch watch how long you spend there once you get started.

  3. jt

Keep reading Luke and try John Arguello at Cubs Den. They sometimes define how they effectively use these.
Google definitions at Fangraphs…. you will get the hang of it in a hurry.

  4. splatstrike

    ok thanks guys

    1. MoneyBoy

yeah splatstrike … the Den has a glossary of terms that’s helpful

  5. Rafael R.

Hoping for more solid fundamental play! Go Cubs Go!

  6. splatstrike

One more thing…what would u guys say the most important (i.e. the most worth-watching) stats are? (just so i don’t have to go through them all)
    Thanks

    1. TWC

      sCRAP+

    2. MichiganGoat

      BFAR (BellyFire Above Replacement)

    3. DarthHater

wOBA (don’t listen to those smart-asses above) ;-)

      1. TWC

        HRYK.

Dig on wOBA and you’ll start getting into things like run expectancy and the like. Pick up The Book, too.

    4. MichiganGoat

In seriousness wOBA is a good one if your looking for a more advanced sabermetric and of course OPS is good for a standard way to look. But there are so many things you should look at and never use just one or two stats to measure a player.

  7. mudge

Looking for a lockdown 8 from Shark tonight.

  8. Rafael R.

Splat there’s so many but common ones are FIP and wOBP. Lol at sCrap+ and BFAR. Maybe BUM% works too

  9. Rafael R.

    Oops…wOBA not wOBP.

  10. splatstrike

haha i actually looked up the sCRAP+ and it took me a sec to realize how gullible i am.

    1. MichiganGoat

One of these days I’m going to try and figure out a way to measure sCRAP+

      It is very real

      1. wvcubsfan

        ((bunt hits+sac bunts)*GIDP/HR + (errors+CS) + $ in jersey sales/AAV) / 100

  11. splatstrike

    wait…now i’m officially confused

    1. MichiganGoat
    2. MichiganGoat

      Confused how?

      1. wvcubsfan

Because he’s still looking for the formula @ fangraphs.

        1. MichiganGoat

That’s nothing compared to the mind boggling nature of Tango’s “The Book”

    3. DarthHater

Just ask yourself this: Have you ever met a talking goat that you could trust? :-P

    4. wvcubsfan

Ask yourself this: Have you ever met a talking goat that drinks beer that you couldn’t trust?

      1. MichiganGoat

        Exactly!

      2. DarthHater

        I admit, I have not.

  12. BlameHendry

More and more it looks like Lake really is a “con” just like Keith Law said.

    1. wvcubsfan

More and more it looks like you are an unimaginative troll just like i thought the first time i read one of your replies.

      1. BlameHendry

Maybe you should look up the actual definition of an internet troll… I’m not trolling, but I certainly can start if you’d like a demonstration.

          1. Drew7

This meme wins you the internet for today.

    2. TWC

Oh, you mean he WASN’T going to go .545/.565/.864 all season? Color me shocked. I really feel like the rug was pulled out from under me. And, man, that rug really tied the room together, did it not?

      1. baldtaxguy

I laughed very out loud at the very awesome rug comment. Thank you for that.

      2. wvcubsfan

Next you’ll tell me Rusin isn’t going to go undefeated the rest of the year.

        1. baldtaxguy

          “The Horror…..”

      3. BlameHendry

Of course not, but I didn’t think he would be as unproductive as he’s been since game 3 of the ARZ series either.

        1. wvcubsfan

Look the rug pisser is back

  13. Scott

    F@ckin tied the room together!

    1. TWC

And this guy peed on it.

      1. wvcubsfan

Probably didn’t have a puppy pad underneath it either did you?

      2. ChrisN324

Kieth Law pissed on the rug that is Junior Lake. And man did he really tie that Cubs lineup together

        1. Eternal Pessimist

Keith Law’s comments really broke Lake’s confidence…otherwise 350/500/1200 for the year.

      3. Jp3

        TWC (Donnie) please.

  14. baldtaxguy

Rosario for Kane County having a bad night. 12 earned after 4 innings.

    1. Eternal Pessimist

      Crap…who??

  15. William

We’re leaving a small village on the basepaths.

  16. BlameHendry

Shark’s velocity is just a little bit down it seems. 2-3Mph at most, so nothing to panic over, but I’d like to see that 96-97 he’s flashed before. Little bit of dead arm going on maybe?

also, that barehand play was scary. I really do appreciate the competitiveness, but in a season where the Cubs are not in contention, I’d rather him give up the base hit than injure himself and slow his development…

  17. daveyrosello

Junior Lake not impressing on the basepaths. He’ll need to work on that, he’s fast enough that he should be better at stealing bases. I wonder if Vince Coleman still does that off-season boot camp thing for instruction in base stealing?

    1. BlameHendry

not exactly a surprise. We were warned of his sometimes-inexplicable mental gaffes. Something he shares with Castro. With his speed, if he just becomes a smarter base-runner, he could become more of a threat (obviously)

  18. nkniacc

I just wonder if some of these teams like Oakland Pittsburgh and Arizona are kinda worried about this biogenesis suspensions that maybe coming

  19. willis

Ballgame. Strop was due for a bad outing and we got it tonight.

    1. DarthHater

      He’s a con. :-P

      1. SirCub

        Ha.

  20. Jason P

Why can’t we beat the damn Brewers this year? They’re terrible.

  21. willis

Ugh, not sure if I would have been as patient with him tonight. He pitched Saturday and Sunday then flew cross country. Bringing him in I get, but on a short lease. He’s imploding now. I hate the cubs losing to the Brewers.

  22. Dustin S

At the game, that double kind of cleared the stands. Glad i was here though if it was Shark’s last Cub start.

  23. willis

So Mike Olt is really good…

  24. Crockett

Did my dreams really come true? Is Paul Sullivan really off the Cubs beat?!?

    1. Jimmy James

Did they send him back to the shire?

  25. mudge

A riveting pitcher’s duel, final score 5-0. What?!

  26. rockin' dawg

Strop is starting to remind me of Marmol….

    1. Jimmy James

That’s what I thought the comp was when he came over….
