BN Trade Deadline Blogathon: Hour 12 (and a Podcast!)

lou piniella sleepingI am currently blogging – here, on Facebook, and on Twitter (hash tag #BNBlogathon for those who want to jump into the fray themselves) – for 36 hours straight, until slightly past MLB’s July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline. I’ll be doing recaps on the process throughout the day, but you’ll also see normal posting (Bullets, Series Preview, Pre-Gamin’, EBS), as well as an uptick in rumor/trade posts.

We are 1/3 of the way through the BN Blogathon, and the Trade Deadline is less than 24 hours away. Chatter is definitely picking up.

I mentioned it in the last update: we recorded a podcast today! It’s episode 36 of the BN Podcast, and you can find it at the bottom of this post (or you can subscribe on iTunes). It’s heavy on – what else – trade rumors, and we also get into a ton of emails. It’s a fun one this week.

Total Posts So Far:

News and Rumors Since the Last Recap:

Things started flying a bit: more Nate Schierholtz smoke, the Indians picked up a lefty reliever (not James Russell), and the Cubs were attached to Ian Kennedy (as in, like, buying Ian Kennedy).

Most Interesting Tidbit Since the Last Recap:

While the Schierholtz thing is more probable and maybe even more impactful, that Kennedy piece has the wheels in my head turning. I think the timing just doesn’t work well for the Cubs, even if the buy low opportunity is intriguing. We’ll see if anything further comes from it.

Current Thoughts About the Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy/Execution:

Buying Kennedy sure would shake things up, yes?

Current Beverage/Stimulant of Choice:

Plain ‘ole Coke Zero from the fridge.

Strangest Thought Passing Through My Mind:

My eyes feel sticky. The kind of sticky I usually associate with tired. No thanks, eyes. Stop that.

Episode 36 and a 36 hour Blogathon? Conspiracy? What else 36 will happen tonight?

    1. DarthHater

And 3 6′s are the number of The Beast. And this conspiracy has been announced by a goat – and everyone knows that goats are accomplices of Satan……

      1. Hansman1982

It’s almost to easy to connect the dots…

        1. DarthHater

          * “too” easy

      2. MichiganGoat

The end is near my friends… Everything is happening to plan.

      3. cubchymyst

36 is a square number as in 6×6. Since this is early, that square might just be 1 side of a 6x6x6 box. If you have a lot of those boxes you have Cubes.

        1. DarthHater

          This is getting scary…

          1. MichiganGoat

        2. Hansman1982

And there would be 6 sides to that 6x6x6 box.

        3. Hansman1982

          6 letters in Taylor
Once Schierholtz gets traded that’ll be 6 players traded this year
          6 wins since the deadline

          1. Hansman1982

            Derp, All-Star break…not deadline.

            1. DarthHater

Between all this and the creepy pictures of Brett, he’s not the only one who get any sleep tonight.

              1. DarthHater

                *won’t get any sleep

Hypothetical: Cubs are trading Shark to AZ. They get Ian Kennedy plus (fill in the blank).

Everyone says the cubs get to take theirr pick from the farm system. But really, what would move the needle for the cubs to make the trade? Name names.

    1. Vulcan

      Bradley for starters.

      1. Hansman1982

        Kennedy, Skaggs, Bradley.

        1. Jason Powers

AZ fans will shoot KT in the parking lot that night. (I kid.)

        2. Rizastro

I would like to send valbu and russell as well and add in davidson and trahan. just a dream though

    2. nkniacc13

In AZ? Bradley would start it with Skaggs

    3. Justin

Well the deal has to have Archie Bradley and probably Skaggs. Ian Kennedy doesn’t excite me much. But I would consider moving Shark for Bradley and Skaggs for sure. Bradley is about as can’t miss as a pitching prospect gets..

    4. Rizzofanclub

How about Kennedy, Skaggs, Eaton, and Stryker Trahan for Shark, James Russell, and Brett Jackson? I would do this trade in a second and its something Arizona would think about.

      1. Crockett

That’s an obvious yes for the Cubs. Obvious no for the DBacks.

      2. nkniacc13

depending on ypur thoughts on Trahan

  3. Vulcan

    Best Vine so far…

  4. X the Cubs Fan

    Joe Baker ‏@JoeBakerMLB 45s
#Cubs outfielder Nate Scheirholtz is not in the lineup vs. a righty. He bats lefty. #Trade?

  5. X the Cubs Fan

    Robert Murray ‏@RobertMurrayMLB 56s
The #Pirates interest in #WhiteSox OF Alex Rios has “lost steam,” according to @scottmerkin. Could resume talks with #SFGiants about Pence.

  6. Coop

Has anyone else noticed that the ’36 Cubs finished 2nd in the NL to the NY Giants. They tied with the STL Cards, and finished ahead of the Pirates and Reds. In an odd parallel to this season – they finished well below their Pythagorean W-L. Charlie Grimm was a player AND the manager. He should have stuck to manager only – his OPS+ was 55… Their AA farm team? The Los Angeles Angels!

    1. Coop

      Also, this means absolutely nothing…

      1. Jason Powers

One of the best minor league squads: 1943 LA Angels. Andy Pafko hit .356.

  7. Fenway Frank

Does anyone else think pinch hitting nate in game 1 with cole g is wierd? Nate can hit lefties better.

    1. nkniacc13

I thought it was strange but now with him not starting gm2 makes you start to wonder

  8. X the Cubs Fan

    heart broken:
    Robert Murray ‏@RobertMurrayMLB 1m
Where in the world is this Darwin Barney and Nate Schierholtz rumor coming from? They haven’t been traded. Remember this is game to of a DH.

  9. nkniacc13

So which one of the Pirates, Cards or Reds makes an acquiring move first?

    1. Rcleven

Cards all ready started with minor deal.
Pirates need to blink first. Small market so a cheap P/U. Schierholtz fits the bill.
      Cincy void of any rumors.

  10. Rcleven

    Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat 2m

For those of you asking, Nate Schierholtz is in #Cubs dugout, just not in the lineup. A little breather

    1. ssckelley

Yeah, that is what they said about Soriano.

      1. X the Cubs Fan

        Completely different situation.

    2. Jp3

      Before his red eye flight?😀

    3. jaslhill

… before he gets on a plane to Pittsburgh.

You just have to let her finish.

      1. Coop

        That’s what she said.

          1. Coop

Bah, I just noticed my selected photo fails at grammar…

Come on, use the apostrophe, people!

  11. jaslhill

Bah … beat me to it.

    JIM BOWDEN ‏@JimBowdenESPNxm 58s

Angels&Cards have discussed a deal that would send either Carlos Martinez or Mike Wacha & Peter Kozma to LAA for Aybar (Cards reluctant)

    1. nkniacc13

I would be to if I were the cards.

    2. VegasGoat

That be a great deal for the angels

    3. Coop

That looks like a typical “Bowden has no idea what’s going on so he makes s#!t up…”

      1. Rcleven

        Jerry Crasnick ‏@jcrasnick 1m

Hearing buzz about 3-way trade talks: Peavy to #dbacks, Kennedy to #angels. Not sure who #whitesox would get.

Still think Peavy ends up a Snake.

    4. Rcleven

      JIM BOWDEN ‏@JimBowdenESPNxm 2m

Cards made it clear to Angels they have no interest in Martinez or Wacha in an Aybar deal…can’t blame Angels for asking

WTF Bowden. Are you talking to your self?

  13. Alex S.

So happy that my Shaqspeare Twitter account managed to make it into a Blogathon post.

  14. VegasGoat

Just curious has there been any direct links to the Dbacks pursuing Samardzija? The espn article sounded like teams were sending typical lowball offers for him. Is any source saying that a team is HEAVILY pursuing Samardzija?

    1. VegasGoat

Any source saying the Dbacks would even be will to I’ve up Bradley for Samardzija? I think we way over speculate about something that has no hard sources saying their is any type of HEAVY pursuit of the Shark

    2. Rcleven

      Snakes puting out feelers only.
      Sticker Shock.

      1. VegasGoat

I just think everyone’s speculation on returns on players are way overblown. Ppl I think will be pretty disappointed at the end of this deadline
