lou piniella sleepingI am currently blogging – here, on Facebook, and on Twitter (hash tag #BNBlogathon for those who want to jump into the fray themselves) – for 36 hours straight, until slightly past MLB’s July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline. I’ll be doing recaps on the process throughout the day, but you’ll also see normal posting (Bullets, Series Preview, Pre-Gamin’, EBS), as well as an uptick in rumor/trade posts.

I’m currently enjoying Jake Arrieta’s debut with the Cubs. He’s looking pretty good.

News and Rumors Since the Last Recap:

Things kept flying a bit: we got more word on the imminence of the Biogenesis suspensions and pondered the impact, and Bruce Levine reported that a James Russell trade almost happened last week.

Most Interesting Tidbit Since the Last Recap:

James Russell as a shopped piece, as opposed to a “listen” piece would be an interesting story line over the next several hours. He hadn’t given up a run since July 2 until earlier today, and his value, contractually, is so good. But the relief market has become more saturated in recent days, and a bunch of relievers have already been moved.

Current Thoughts About the Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy/Execution:

Moving Russell would be a surprise, but I’d like to think the return would make it understandable.

Current Beverage/Stimulant of Choice:

Mountain Dew. Diet Mountain Dew.

Strangest Thought Passing Through My Mind:

No one has commented on my sleeping Lou Piniella picture (that I’ve noticed, anyway). Without looking, do you remember what the images were that preceded Sweet Lou in that position over the last two years?

Your Visual Update:

My state of mind may be as evident in the questionable number of Ls in “baseball” as it is in the video …

  • Jed Jam Band

Wait, Twitter just exploded. Something about Giancarlo Stanton being pulled from a game. Oh, no…..

    • Jed Jam Band

Never mind that. Now they’re saying he’s batting.

      • MichiganGoat

Ah twitter where reactions and retractions happen at the exact same time.

    • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

He was given his Burn Notice. He must leave Miami, never to return.

      • Jed Jam Band

        Nice reference.

    • praying the cubs get ready to win

If the Cubs went after Stanton and the Cubs offered Russell, Vogelbach, Barney, what other player would the Cubs have to include?

      • nkniacc

        Baez and Johnson

      • Rebuilding

There is no one player you could add to that deal to make it happen

  • Rebuilding

    Red Sox?

    • http://www.survivingthalia.com Mike Taylor (no relation)

Red Sox reportedly said they’d give Miami “anything” to get Stanton.

      • VegasGoat

Damn we can’t compete with that bc their system is stack and have a great team. If we did that we’d have depleted farm system and still a terrible lineup with one great player. Sammy Sosa era 2.0?

        • praying the cubs get ready to win

What if we traded Russell, Barney, Vogelbach and Johnson for Stanton and lots of next years international pool money.

          • BT

            then we’d have Stanton.

            • praying the cubs get ready to win

I think we could afford to do this, we still keep our top 5 minor leaguers, Vogelbach is very good but won’t replace Rizzo,. Barney can be replace with our minor leaguers. Russell would be missed and so would Johnson, but Stanton would be one of the players to build around and fit our future very well.

              • nkniacc

                And Miami wouldn’t do it

              • praying the cubs get ready to win

With the money we saved on Soriano, just keep spending this year on international pool players and pay the tax.

          • You had a terrible idea

What if we waste our time talking about a stupid idea for a trade.

            1) no one would accept that trade
            2) it was a stupid idea
            3) in case no one has been watching this year Stanton isn’t as good as he was a few years ago. You have to make contact to hit home runs, and the Cubs have enough whiffers already

            • praying the cubs get ready to win

Blogs are for exchanges, nothing stupid about exchanges.

The cracks are appearing you mind is starting to melt my friend.

Brett is the podcast coming out tonight? Thanks! Keep up the good work! My blogathon donation was money better spent than what government does with my taxes

It should already be out – see the last update.

Hey Brett I don’t think the podcast is up. Been refreshing. Can’t fund it. Just wanted to give you the heads up

Interesting that #Tigers prized OF prospect Avasail Garcia was pulled off field while playing for Toledo.

Not too sure I believe anything this man has to say. But you never know.

    • MichiganGoat

I just don’t think we have enough to get Garcia from the Tigers… but they might be that desperate.

    • Jed Jam Band

Others are confirming this. Some are even saying it was in the middle of an at-bat.

      • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Don’t really see a Cubs fit there for a prospect of that caliber unless they somehow got in on Russell. And obviously that would be a silly good return for Russell.

        • Jed Jam Band

It seems he’s getting high-fives and handshakes, but not hugs. Yeah, getting called up.

          • Jp3

            Not bro-hugs…😞

        • http://www.survivingthalia.com Mike Taylor (no relation)

They are somewhat desperate for relief help. He’d look good in RF for us. Or at the very least, a good platoon partner with Schierholtz or DeJesus.

    • Austin5596

My guess is he’s going to the White Sox, the Tigers are getting someone from the Red Sox, & the Red Sox are getting Peavy

  • cubbie chubbie

Brett, any updates on Arodys Vizcaino?

    • Jon

      I’m convinced he’s not a real person.

    • VegasGoat

He’s still recovering from his bone spur surgery

  • Mush

I hope Brett has a good bladder or close bathroom with all those drinks.

  • jpeck

As far as the “sleepy Lou” picture, I would be more surprised if you had one where he actually awake and managing.

  • davidalanu

Lou may just be sad instead of sleeping. Like “jeez, I cant believe we’ve got a 13 day road trip and sinatro forgot to pack the blender.”

  • Spencer

Good job so far Brett; I just got caught up on all the posts. I’ll have to check in tomorrow morning before Part Two of Operation Destroy Your Soul and Destroy Your Hopes and Dreams begins.

Good luck to you, man. Hope today went well.

World must be ending…too much good news!

  • VegasGoat

I guess Rios left the ball game after falling a ball off his foot. Great for Schierholtz trade stock. But that sucks for the sox. Not sure how serious it is but that is pretty crushing if he’s really hurt. Throws a wrench in their rebuild plan while excellerating others

  • ssckelley

Wasn’t it about this time last year the dugout hugs started?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Yes. Reed, Maholm, Soto.

Nelson Cruz is “highly likely” to accept suspension and not appeal according to Bowden

    • VegasGoat

Bowden has lost all credibility. I’ll wait till I hear it from rosenthal or Herman. But thanks for the update! That would make things really interesting

    • kmr1453

Most are expected not to appeal. If they do, facing possible suspension for twice as long.

    • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

July for the Cubs could be a mini-Xmas! We get plenty of new toys – prospects – to show off to all the girls and boys… in our division!

      BooYAH!

  • http://Bleachernation Lou Brock

Saw something about Peavey to DBacks, Kennedy to Angels, ChiSox ?

    • ssckelley

Oh that 17 team trade is going to happen?

      • Rcleven

Very well might. AZ. wants Peavy bad.
Now can LAA come up with the position players the CWS need.
Got to believe CWS would be relieved to get that 14MM off the books.

        • praying the cubs get ready to win

Any chance AZ would pay us well for Jackson?

And you might also have Villanueva and Grimm. And it’s also possible Baker signs a cheap deal. Then you have Cabrera and Hendricks who will be in AAA

      • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

        Rusin the next Russell.

BP: Strop, Rusin, Grimm, Vizcaino (when he comes back), Villanueva, Rondon (maybe)

Get a SP on the market will work.

    • Justin Koehneke

I don’t see Rusin staying the rotation.

    • Edwin

      Yikes.

  • baldtaxguy

Brett – stellar effort, all the posts have been most enjoyable and informative. Keep up the great job, the updates and insights are very appreciated.

  • http://Bleachernation Lou Brock

First returns on Arrieta very positive. I’d rate him better than Villanueva and put him in that 5 spot of the rotation. Put Villanueva back in the pen and send down either Bowden or Rondon.

    • Crockett

Aren’t there some team control/arbitration involving service time with Arrieta?

I think he goes down to get beyond whatever the magic number is.

      • Rebuilding

His service time coming into the year was 2.066 so there is likely to be a Super 2 number

Jesus – I was half kidding when I said the BP would blow it, but there you go.

        Cub relievers:
        27th ERA
        30th in SO
        21st in BB
        28th in OPS
        30th in blown saves
