lou piniella sleepingI am currently blogging – here, on Facebook, and on Twitter (hash tag #BNBlogathon for those who want to jump into the fray themselves) – for 36 hours straight, until slightly past MLB’s July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline. I’ll be doing recaps on the process throughout the day, but you’ll also see normal posting (Bullets, Series Preview, Pre-Gamin’, EBS), as well as an uptick in rumor/trade posts.

It’s the first update of the Blogathon, which necessarily means it’ll be a little thin. There isn’t a whole lot of action yet this morning, but there are 33 hours to go. Man, that’s a long time …

Total Posts So Far:

News and Rumors Since the Last Recap:

Well, there wasn’t a “last recap,” but the latest has folks still discussing possible Jeff Samardzija trade returns.

Most Interesting Tidbit Since the Last Recap:

Yeah, I mean, once again, this’ll make more sense when there are more recaps.

Current Thoughts About the Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy/Execution:

It was probably the right move to jump the market on the pitching side, if for no other reason than a-bird-in-hand, and all that. The pieces you don’t feel like you have to move – the Russells, the Schierholtzes, the DeJesuses, the Villanuevas, etc. – you might as well take it right up to the deadline to see if anyone gets desperate. Otherwise, you keep them.

Current Beverage/Stimulant of Choice:

Only the milk in my bowl of cereal. I don’t want to start too early with the artificial energy. Plus, my Peanut Butter Crunch tasted all kinds of stale, and I’m not sure how much more I want to pour on top of that potential powder keg.

Strangest Thought Passing Through My Mind:

I really hope the increased number of updates this year (due to the lengthened Blogathon) don’t sap me of creativity by Hour 24, such that the last four updates are awful and boring.

    Brett –

Great stuff, keep up the good work. Any chance your blog can be copied either here or another website? My workplace doesn’t allow access to social networking sites.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      I’m not sure I understand the question … you’re here now …

      • Cubbie Blues

I think he is talking about the twitter and Facebook feeds.

      • Featherstone

But if he’s here, where am I?!

        • Eric

          But if I’m here… and he’s there… then that means………….. oh boy!

          • ssckelley

Don’t start this stuff yet, wait until hour 24.

      • Isaac

This site isn’t considered “social networking”, thank God. I took your earlier post to mean that you had more content on FB/Twitter. If I misunderstood, please disregard.

        • Cubbie Blues

He does, but if he tried to relay everything from FB/Twitter onto his site a) he wouldn’t have time to do much else (actually it wouldn’t be feasible with twitter (too much info going back and forth)) b) there would be no point in having FB/Twitter.

    • Justin Koehneke

      Use your phone!

  • JoshO

Peavy scratched from start tonight. Don’t know if thats worthy of an update

    • Jp3

That should be obvious seeing if they already packed his locker. What’s he suppose to wear to pitch😀

    • ncsujuri

Also was reported he brought 5 suitcases to the park, I’d assume that means he thinks he is gonna be on the way somewhere else…

      • Jim L.

        Five suitcases? What a diva.

  • madisoncub

Brett looks like he’s in a bunker… ha!

  • Wilbur

    “That lighting sure isn’t flattering.”

Are you sure its the lighting …

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Yes. Certain.

      • Eternal Pessimist

Hey Brett, aren’t you supposed to get the rings under your eyes towards the end of the 36 hours??

Maybe it is the cat dander from your last post…some benadryl might help, but, oh crap, will put you right to sleep. Sorry buddy, you have a job to do.

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I think it was just the crack of dawn thing – I shot that right after I woke up.

  • Crockett

I awoke to the following text:

“This is the quietest day before the deadline I ever remember. I dislike this new CBA a lot.”

    So there’s that.

    • cubchymyst

Wonder of an impact that the biogenesis think is having on the trade deadline. Last think you want to do is trade for a player who might get suspended. Also if one of your players get suspended you might decide to make a trade to replace them instead of upgrading a different position. Hopefully the MLB releases that information soon.

      • TonyP

Agree, MLB shouldn’t be dragging this out right up until the deadline.

        • Cubbie Blues

Yeah, I already made contentions on my fantasy team.

      • kmr1453

The delay in announcing is becoming increasing clear why MLB will most likely wait until after the deadline to for the hammer.

Joel Sherman is saying MLB is dangling a carrot to entice players of 50 games to not appeal. If they take their suspension, don’t appeal, teams can’t rush to make trades b4 the deadline. We all know waiver claims are made in August which are simply blocks of other teams.

  • Cubfan Budman

Totally random thought ….. I would love to end up with Brian McCann via free agency next year.

    • Cubbie Blues

      Whatever turns you on, man.

    • JustinGGoodwin

Where did you get your avatar Cubfan Budman? I’m pretty sure I created that. haha Crazy.

      • Eternal Pessimist

        Looks a lot like man-bear-pig.

    • YourResidentJag

Yeah, I ok with that as well. Why not we don’t have any C in the system as of yet? And who knows about Navarro.

  • OregonCubFan

Peanut butter crunch – great choice!

    • Headscratchin

Crunch berries is the ONLY way to go!

    • TheDondino

I agree on the crunch-berries, PB crunch just sounds nasty, never tried it. Partial to the original, regular Cap’n Crunch every now and then…good stuff.

      • Coop

I care a great deal for Apple Jacks.

  • Brent

What did BP have to say about Vogelbach? I’ve seen that they have an article with”eye witness” accounts. Thanks!

    • TulaneCubs

Nothing ground breaking. The guy that did his evaluation seemed a little lower than we’ve heard on his hit tool and power. Echoed the sentiment that Vogelbach can’t play first base. Said he could be a major league DH.

  • J

Thanks for eating a Quaker Product man! Chicago represent!

    • ssckelley

All made in the smelliest city in the state of Iowa.

      • Ricky

        Sioux City?!

        • TheDondino

          Cedar Rapids.

          • Ricky

Ah, that was guess #2. Just moved from Chicago to DSM, still learning the smelly cities.

            • hansman1982

              Don’t go near Perry then.

            • YourResidentJag

Or Clinton, Iowa. Worst that Cedar Rapids. Though don’t know what Perry smells like.

          • LWeb23

Oh gosh, I swear it smells different every time I go through there. It always smells like some sort of breakfast food though.

          • YourResidentJag

Ah, Cedar Rapids smell. So prominent in my days from from Quad Cities to the University of Northern Iowa. And smelling it before getting into the Van Halen concert at the local arena…ah good times.

        • ssckelley

You just have thought I said “dirtiest” city in Iowa.

  • Jim

Should’ve gone with Fruity Pebbles. Just sayin’.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

You won’t believe me, but that was *literally* my choice this morning – Peanut Butter Crunch or Fruity Pebbles.

      • TheDondino

        • Cubbie Blues

Is that Raiders of the Lost Ark?

          • TheDondino

            Last Crusade

            • Cubbie Blues

Ah, yes that’s actually the one I was thinking of. They were drinking out of the Holy Grail. The Ark of the Covenant would have been a much longer sip.

              • hansman1982

Maybe it was a bath to give eternal life.

      • Gcheezpuff

10 out of 10 chances I go fruity pebbles… Now if you said Cruch Berries, that is a different story.

        • Gcheezpuff

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I also have Crunch Berries available to me. I like to keep a wide variety of cereals at the house.

        • hansman1982

          Nooo, Tootie Frooties. Greatest.Cereal.EVAH

          • Whiteflag

            Fruitie Pebbles.

            • Mr. B. Patient

Coco Puffs with banana. What is WRONG with you people?

    • Headscratchin

FOOD FIGHT!!! You’re a MORAN if you’re saying fruity pebbles. I can tell by your post you live in your Mommy’s basement and probably even have your hair done up with that cute little pig tail thingy on top your head. Pebbles – MORAN!!

      Where’s that “snark” font…

      • MichiganGoat

I’m showing my age here but Kashi Pumpkin Flax Plus is the best cereal.

        • TWC

What? You mean everybody around here doesn’t have a custom hot cereal blend of quick-cooking oats, chia seeds, hemp hearts, flax seeds, with a touch of brown sugar and dried berries, topped with fresh-from-the-garden blueberries? With a couple slices of homemade sourdough and homemade almond butter on the side?

          How odd.

          • hansman1982

        • Feeney

Large flake oats. Hot water. Cinnamon. That’s it.

          • TonyP

2 pots of coffee is my only breakfast!!!!!!!!

            • SirCub

              You’re a monster.

    • Coop

Oh yes, Fruity Pebbles are delicious.

  • Wrigleyvillewest

No- has to be a large bowl of cocoa pebbles with a good banana sliced into it. Nothing says i choose my own destiny like chocalate covered banana for breakfast…

Interesting tweet from Wayne Drehs of ESPN: Wayne Drehs ‏@espnWD 20m
Trying to follow the @BleacherNation trade deadline blogathon from Barcelona. The roaming data charges could get ugly.

    • X The Cubs Fan

    • Whiteflag

      Awesome! You’re making it, Brett.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Thanks. Wayne’s a cool dude.

      • YourResidentJag

        Yeah, Barcelona.

      • YourResidentJag

I remember him most prominently in that ESPN documentary Catching Hell.

  • YourResidentJag

    Joel Sherman ‏@Joelsherman1 7m
Hear Biogenesis suspensions not today, unlikely tmrw, probably Thurs or Fri, so beyond trade deadline. A-Rod #Yankees

    • Crockett

I feel like this is definitely Selig saying “F you” to teams for not “controlling” players. Braun was on a team that is 15 games under…his role doesn’t matter.

ARod, Cruz, and Colon certainly do.

      • Coop

Just another examples of what a “great” commissioner Bud is…

  • Rcleven

    Boise Hawks Radio ‏@BoiseHawksRadio 30m

Four roster moves will be made later today…including a pair of players promoted… look for the news shortly

    • Mr. B. Patient

3 college pitchers and a certain college 3rd baseman?

  • Freshness21

“Plus, my Peanut Butter Crunch tasted all kinds of stale, and I’m not sure how much more I want to pour on top of that potential powder keg.” = Hilarious

  • DarthHater

Bert, you’ve got bags under your eyes after only 6 hours? This is not looking good… 😛
