lou piniella sleepingI am currently blogging – here, on Facebook, and on Twitter (hash tag #BNBlogathon for those who want to jump into the fray themselves) – for 36 hours straight, until slightly past MLB’s July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline. I’ll be doing recaps on the process throughout the day, but you’ll also see normal posting (Bullets, Series Preview, Pre-Gamin’, EBS), as well as an uptick in rumor/trade posts.

How has it already been six hours? We haven’t even gotten to the really hot and heavy parts of this event, and I already feel like it’s flying.

Total Posts So Far:

News and Rumors Since the Last Recap:

The Rockies are interested in Kevin Gregg, and the White Sox are almost certainly going to deal Jake Peavy.

Most Interesting Tidbit Since the Last Recap:

I find that Peavy story line to be fascinating. The impact to the Cubs is slight (though a farm-depleting deal with the Cardinals would be swell (and unlikely, given the depth)), but it’s interesting to be on the outside of one of these “like, duh, they have to trade this guy … but what if they don’t?” kind of situations.

Current Thoughts About the Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy/Execution:

Sure and steady.

Current Beverage/Stimulant of Choice:

The best soda in the history of ever. Or not. See below.

Strangest Thought Passing Through My Mind:

I wonder how long Wendy’s is going to have this pretzel bun burger. I got it last week just because I wanted to confirm that it was a stupid gimmick … and it was actually really good (sans mustard, because gross). They say limited time, which means, even if it’s successful, it’ll probably turn into one of those McRib situations.

A Selection of #BNBlogathon Tweets:

(no, it would not)

Your Visual Update:

Apropos of both the beverage and strange thought, I’d planned to get myself a Mr. Spokacola at Wendy’s (two parts Coke (or Diet Coke, I’m getting older), one part Sprite, one part Mr. Pibb (or Dr. Pepper, if you have to). It’s delicious. And amazing. But the Wendy’s had the damn drink thingy behind the counter, and it was packed, so I wasn’t about to explain to the young man how to make my cocktail. Had to settle for a Diet Coke. Le sigh …

Would love to see you reporting “from a bunker” during the wee hours of tomorrow morning.

  • http://www.shadowsofwrigley.com Tommy (TC)

A thought about the Peavy deal – the Sox dont have to trade him by tomorrow. His contract is very large and I assume that it would pass through waivers in August if a deal can’t get done until then

    • Featherstone

He would must definitely not pass through waivers. His contract, while large, is no unreasonable and he has very real value. He probably wouldn’t even make it past the Astros.

    • bbmoney

I doubt it would pass through waivers. Someone would probably claim him, his contract isn’t really that bad. Then they might be able to get a deal done, but they could only negotiate with that 1 team, possibly hurting their leverage.

  • Mush

You need the Wendy’s with the 100 flavor pop machine.

  • Idaho Razorback

Or if you live in North Idaho and like Dr. Pepper, you will get Dr. West, a product by Western Family. I myself is a Natrual Ice drinker.

    • butlerdawgs

At least he got his degree. Mr. Pibb is just a dropout.

  • Kevin

The availability of the McRib is dependent on the fluctuating price of pork. Bummer, cause I love me some pig.

    • butlerdawgs

I can’t imagine why, though. Is there any pork in it?

  • Kygavin

Bud Norris scratched from his start today. Tradezzzzzzzzzzz

    • Kygavin

Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger was delicious. That melted cheese sauce of whatever? come on

    • Crockett

      TRADES. Brett…I am bored.

  • Michael

Can some body explain to me it seams as if the indians are content! I feel that they should make a move. They are behind a better tigers club is currently improving their one area of need. I don’t understand why they haven’t blown up theo and Jed’s phone about Russell and Gregg and bench types!

    • Otsum11

My take on it would be they don’t feel adding pieces like Russel, Gregg or bench players puts them over the top. And would rather hold on to the pieces (even if those players aren’t top tier prospects) it would take to land players that won’t bring them a championship.

  • waittilthisyear

my first caffinated beverage of the day worked even worse; spilled it all over an appellate justice’s papers. i am an intern. poppycock

  • Vulcan

Keep it up, Brett! Great work as always.

  • RizzoCastro

Michael Young will be traded today or tomorrow. Where will he go? Yankees, O’s, Red Soxs, or Dodgers?

  • Swence32

When it comes to pretzel bun burgers, Wendy’s is passable. Not great, but I wouldn’t be apposed to going to get one right now… dammit Brett.

  • Die hard

Players play up to their teams needs– eg Soto walk off last nite … Cubs have no such needs … So they don’t know how good their players can be

    • waittilthisyear

soto is batting .200. side note, rangers won with a game tying homerun from AJ pierzynski, then a walkoff by soto. 2 former chicago catchers

      • MichiganGoat

Best to just leave die hard alone when he post these absurd statements… sit back and enjoy them from a distance.

    • DarthHater

So, Texas has more need of a catcher who’s hitting .210/.303./.400 than the Cubs have. Got it. I guess this would also explain why Soto had a great season in 2010, when the Cubs went 75-87.

  • jayrig5

I’m imagining waiting on you to finish your drink of choice at a Five Guys (or somewhere else with a Coke Freestyle machine) and getting very, very annoyed.

But, you could sub in Coke Zero for Coke and it’d be a massive upgrade from the Diet Coke version.

    • Tobias

I’m a major fan of the Vanilla Coke Zero, but I’m rather fond of the Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper. Does anyone remember the Ultraviolet Mt. Dew.

Sources: Bud Norris very likely to be dealt today, and Pittsburgh could be landing spot. Package built around Tyler Glasnow makes sense.

    • Crockett

Norris is not a game changer. This would not be a good trade for Pittsburgh.

    • On The Farm

    • RizzoCastro

That blows. Glasnow for Norris that is a little much IMO. The Pirates want to win this year I understand, but Norris was already in the NLC and wasn’t that good. ERA at 4.33 for his career and 9K/9 and 4BB/9 that isn’t that great. Only good thing is he isn’t a FA until 2016 so I guess they will get some value there.

    • Jed Jam Band

I will be so disappointed if they give up Glasnow for Norris.

  • MichiganGoat

    Mr. Spokacola?

Brett has offically made up a drink.

  • chrisfchi

i was going to suggest doing some sort of video to go along with the blogathon,i think by hour 26 were gonna see you do the hokey-pokey or something.

  • ETS

glasnow included in a deal for norris is wishful thinking by stros, isn’t it?

  • Otsum11

    Per Danny Knobler ‏
    @DannyKnoblerCBS 44s

We’ll see what happens with Norris, but I’m told Astros have no trade even close with anyone as of now.

  • Jim Gillmeister

Now I understand. You’re clearly suffering from a lack of mustard. Mustard Rules!!!!!

    • MichiganGoat

Agreed Mustard and Pretzels are partners in life… but if we’re talking plain yellow mustard I can understand not bring a fan but good mustard and pretzels are the best.

  • On The Farm

Spokacola, interesting, I have never added the Sprite element, I usually just do a Dr. Coke (clearly I am not as clever with names as you). I will now be adding Sprite to my fountain drinks. This blogathon is providing so many new activities!

Flow with the Force you must, if complete images you would post.

    • MichiganGoat

Well that was fun but worth it for a great picture.

  • Blublud

Thanks Brett. I’m at Wendy’s. Guess I’ll try the pretzel burger.

    • Blublud

Pretzel burger was decent” but it had onion, mustard and cheese sauce on it. Next time I’ll ask that they not put those on it.

      • Coop

Hmmm, it is hard to beat cheese in sauce form. Mustard is no bueno, though.

    • On The Farm

I am eating one right now and it is perfection.

  • Justin

Geeeez, somebody get Brett to do commercials for Wendy’s instead of that annoying redhead. Bringing them business already.

    • Carew

      But she’s a pretty redhead

      • Cubbie Blues

You don’t mean Wendy, do you?

        • Cubbie Blues

See, even the picture is an invalid size.

A full day of BN Blogathon and Breaking Bad. Does it get any better than this?

  • Diggs

Keep up the good work, Brett — the blogathon is a great thing you’re doing.

One thing: The headline for the Peavy story says the Sox are likely to *keep* Peavy, which is a little misleading.

Also, that pretzel bun cheeseburger from Wendy’s is the goods.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Thanks – but that headline accurately states the absurd position the White Sox have apparently taken.

      • DarthHater

A headline that doesn’t really make sense until after you have read the entire article and thought about it a little may be amusing, but it kind of defeats the purpose of a headline. 😉

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I don’t really know why this is a thing. That headline isn’t even borderline. Shrug.

          • DarthHater

Okay, guess I’m just stupid. (First guy who jumps in to agree gets a Force choke. I mean it.)

            • Jp3

              Ummmmmmm Darth…. Never mind

            • Hansman1982

I won’t “agree”; I’ll just refuse to disagree.

              • DarthHater

I won’t Force choke you. I’ll just refuse to Force heimlich you when that hamburger goes down the wrong way.

                • hansman1982

Bah, doesn’t matter which way hamburgers go down, they ALWAYS make it to my stomach.

            • MichiganGoat

Yup Dark Lord of the Stupid
