wrigley field from right bleachersSo much for the Brewers being a doormat in this series. Who started that ridiculous rumor?

Jake Arrieta starts for the Cubs in his debut with the club. He’s obviously one to watch as we look ahead to the near-term future.

You’re going to look at the lineup, and you’re going to see things – Nate Schierholtz out against a righty, Darwin Barney sitting. You’re going to want to do some mental gymnastics and predict a trade. Sure, maybe that’s what’s up. Obviously the Schierholtz smoke is quite billow-y right now. But, keep in mind: this is Game Two of a doubleheader. Sometimes the lineup looks wonky because it’s Game Two of a doubleheader.

But, like, yeah, be on the lookout for Bro Hugs.

Yo, Brett, I don’t think you have to worry about the Cubs going .500 for the year given their recent performance. And, by the way, you’re doing a fine job. How ya feelin’?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Tired. Legitimately tired. I need the late-night buzz soon.

      • DarthHater

Come on, only 22 hours to go!

      • MichiganGoat

Just wait till the beer kicks in from the late night crowd!

      • mudge

Caffeine dehydrates. Keep pounding water & take deep slow breaths.

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Can’t I pound caffeine and water, too? I’m going to need the caffeine. I can tell.

          • mudge

Yup, just alternate with some plain ol’ miraculous water.

            • Crockett

This isn’t true. If you drink coffee, tea, or pop daily…you won’t have the diuretic effect. Drink what you want, sir.

            • Coop

Or go Rick James style! That’ll keep you awake!

        • Drew7

“Pound water and take deep, slow breaths.”

          Sounds pretty nap-inducing to me.

  • ssckelley

    Whar Schierholtz?

  • Jon

I hope this Tyler kid isn’t a “Thornburg” in the Cubs side!

    • Blublud

      No claps. Lol

      • Cubbie Blues

Darth please no meme for clap.

      • MichiganGoat

        You didn’t say I couldn’t

        • Cubbie Blues

At least it wasn’t the clap I was thinking of.

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Salesguy

    +1 goat :)

  • @cubsfantroy

Give him #49 and he walks the first batter he faces. Yay.

  • jpeck

    I think Arrieta could be a #1 in 2014

    • Arrieta’sUncle

      I hope you are right.

    • Jon

      A #1 on a terrible team.

    • Mush

      I hope tongue in cheek.

      • jpeck

        Firmly in cheek

  • KidCubbie

At least Arrieta looks like a stud athlete. Good live arm.

  • Mush

This ump squeezing him and calls for brewer pitcher. Worst year ever for umps.

  • Jono

Im liking arrieta…..OH, DIONER HIT IN THE NUTS.

    • jpeck

He can really throw the javelin too. Oh, that was his bat.

  • Jonathn

Do you think if this team were more competitive they would play Navarro more at catcher? To my eye he’s better than Castillo. Someone correct me with some stats or something.

    • Jimmy James

As a hitter yes, at defense…not so much

  • jpeck

My Baltimore source says at the time of the trade: ” Arrieta would no-hit the Yankees for 4 innings, then will have a blow-up inning where he gets wild and gets hit around.”

    • nkniacc13

makes sense for a pitcher that struggles at times with control

      • jpeck

I’m pretty sure this Brewer lineup doesnt compare to the old Yankee lineups.

He didnt seem disappointed about losing either Balt. pitcher, but I like them both so far.

  • KidCubbie

What’s the best rookie season as a first baseman for the Cubs.

    • KidCubbie

    • Cub Fan in Hickory(Mike S)

Grace batted .276 with a .391 OBP his rbis and runs scored were low but Its probably hard to top Gracie. Maybe Frank Chance back in the way day.

      • Cub Fan in Hickory(Mike S)

Grace batted .296 with a .371, sorry battling a bout of dyslexia

        • KidCubbie

Thanks. Just curious as to how Rizzo compares.

  • X the Cubs Fan

    Robert Murray ‏@RobertMurrayMLB 1m
Jackie Bradley Jr. pulled from Triple-A game today, per @redsoxstats. Trade? Injury? #RedSox

    • VegasGoat

      maybe wavy deal?

      • VegasGoat

        Maybe Peavy deal?*

        • nkniacc

          Lee deal?

          • VegasGoat

You’d have to check if 5 of their top 10 prospects got pulled if it were a Lee trade. I don’t think he’s going any where

    • Rcleven

      Alex Speier ‏@alexspeier 9m

Jackie Bradley Jr. has been replaced by pinch-hitter Justin Henry in Pawtucket, but industry source says no trade involving him is imminent

  • William

Arrieta has some sadistic pitches, but he needs to stop nibbling and just attack the hitters.

    • Rcleven

      Does have some nasty stufff.

  • SalukiHawk

Is that nibbling, or failure to locate?

    • William

To me, he looks tentative and is trying too hard to make the perfect pitch.

  • David

Wondering if Arrieta can be a closer… Looks like one. His fastball seems to be his best pitch, by far. Maybe he can get upto 97/ 98 MPH as a closer.

    • Rcleven

Made a nice start. Two hitter in six. That’s a quality start.
      I’ll take that any time.

  • William

Why would you throw Juan Francisco a strike? Especially after he swung at a pitch ten miles in the dirt. I know I said you should attack, but there’s always an exception to every rule.

  • Jon

This ump is a fucking bum. That was a bullshit call on Lake

  • Arrieta’sUncle

    Good start!

  • Jon

I hope this ump gets ass cancer

    • Jed Jam Band

Yo, can we quit it with the inflammatory comments?

    • Cubbie Blues

Seriously, that is completely uncalled for.

    • MichiganGoat

Okay just to be clear… you don’t like the ump? Mkay, got it now bang a different drum.

  • Jon

Squeezed Lake prior AB to this one with pitch 6 inches low and outside of the zone , caused Lake to expand his zone the next AB. This guy shouldn’t have a job

    • Drew7

      Ok, but “ass cancer”?

      Are you 5?

      • mudge

        Ask answer.

  • BT

Castro has to catch that goddamn ball.

But I assume this one’s on Sveum

    • Carew

I have a feeling that was one of those harder-than-it-looks plays

      • ssckelley

Nope, it was an easy catch.

  • Vulcan

And there goes the lead. Unbelievable…

  • http://cubsdailyrecaps.blogspot.com Jason P

You 2013 Cubs — the most unclutch team in the majors.

The Gregg 3-2 pitch was a strike, though.

  • willis

You can’t make this stuff up. Two blown games in one day. Outstanding stuff. Y’all worried about the draft pick can rest easy, this thing has gone off the rails.

  • Jeff

I guess it’s pretty easy to figure out why Russell and Gregg weren’t traded today…lol

    • BT

      that wasn’t remotely Gregg’s fault.

      • ssckelley

        No Gregg’s pitches looked good.

  • Tom A.

    Ugh ! Dog-gone Marmol, I mean Gregg.

  • Crockett

Cubs will be back into protected pick territory! Hell yeah!

  • RY34

Well back to harsh reality of being one of the worst teams in baseball!

  • Jonathn

Why does Barney always seem to bat in clutch spots? This lineup is hard to watch
