musclesEven if the Biogenesis suspensions are not technically handed down before the Trade Deadline later today, it sounds like they will impact some teams’ activities. According to the New York Daily News, Major League Baseball has informed the Players Association of which players it will suspend for their connection to the Biogenesis clinic, which had allegedly been distributing performance-enhancing drugs.

The Daily News indicates that Alex Rodriguez, Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta, Everth Cabrera, and five others were identified by MLB and will be suspended this week. (The article’s language is a bit fuzzy on this point, and, although it definitively states that nine total players will be suspended, it’s slightly unclear if those three, after Rodriguez, are definitely included. The article definitely suggests it, though.). The players could accept a punishment as soon as today.

The Trade Deadline impact was already suggested by the three-team Jake Peavy trade late last night, in which the Detroit Tigers picked up shortstop Jose Iglesias, a possible signal that they expect Peralta to be suspended.

As for why just nine players are to be suspended instead of the 20+ previously reported, the Daily News says MLB either didn’t have enough evidence on some of the connected players, or the players were already caught and suspended previously (i.e., Bartolo Colon, Melky Cabrera, and Yasmani Grandal).

Short of a big surprise in the suspensions, then, it looks like the only remaining major Trade Deadline impact here relates to a possible Cruz suspension, and the Rangers’ attending pursuit of an outfield bat. They haven’t been explicitly connected to Nate Schierholtz or David DeJesus, but that’s where you’d be watching on this story.

Wonder if any other big names are getting suspended or if those other “unnamed” players aren’t major impact players.

    • W_Francisco

I don’t think they’re gonna be guys that are impact players or we would have heard about them, im sure some guys in the minors will get suspended too like Fernando Martinez, hes been linked, as well as Jesus Montero and Francisco Cervelli

    • fromthemitten

could also be recently retired guys

  • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

Texas you gotta think has to add a OF bat. Berkman and Cruz both gone.

    • MichiganGoat

Make this drives up Scheirholtz’s value?

      • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

Here’s hoping. But Texas hasn’t been “seen” scouting the Cubs lately. Pirates have been reported. So, either Texas knows enough or has no interest at all.

        • fromthemitten

I’m sure the Texas scouts where were checking out Garza were also keeping an eye on Cubs hitters if they were doing their due dilligence

          • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

You’d think so…But awfully quiet. Cruz hasn’t decided on whether to appeal. I wonder: you think Texas said, appeal it – and will consider a resign for next season???? (Assuming that process takes awhile.)

They need a right handed OF bat, too. Unless they wish to unload Perez for Lake.
          .
Murphy, Martin, and E. Beltre are all lefties with similar skill sets and Baker/Gentry are just lefty “mashers”.

    Where is the Tidrow Tribute?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I haven’t been able to think of a good one, having used the most obvious last year (and all the good pictures) …

      • MichiganGoat

Hmmmm let me think about it while I take another nap ;)

But we must properly give tribute or face the wrath of the stashe!

  • Wrennaisance

Solve for X, where X is the value of a prospect.

Rangers = All In For This Year (else why rent-a-pitcher?)
Nelson Cruz = Early Offseason OF (we think? we hope?)

Team That Needs to Win –
    Early Offseasn OF =
    The Funky Smell of Desperation

    Now,
Nate Schierholtz = Best Bat On Market

Team That Needs to Win +
    Best Bat On Market =
    X???

    • Rizastro

I think Darwin barney might have something to say about best bat on the market (as he rolls over on another ball off the tee in the cage)

      • Jp3

Rizzasrto. That was funny and made me giggle way too early in the morning. There goes Barney muscling up hitting one out of the IF off the tee

    • http://deepcenterfield.blogspot.com Jason Powers

If they are keeping Joe Nathan, I’ll ask for Neftali Feliz, whose on the DL right now.

Throw in Brett Jackson, RHP Dillon Maples. That way they get a pitcher back, and 2 OFs that can play in that bandbox.

I’ll get lambasted for crazy, but I would ask for Mr. Feliz. Gotta be worth it. Put him at the back of the BP, Cubs WIN! (in theory)

  • H.A.

I think we need to see some official BN Apparel in the next vine video thing.

    (But please no banana hammock.)

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I was actually wearing a BN shirt in all but the last one (post-shower).

      • H.A.

        Show me some logo!

  • Josh

Looks like schierholtz will be going to Texas or Pittsburg lets hope Pittsburg

Jhonny Peralta definitely effects my playoff run for fantasy greatness.

  • Die hard

Bud should be suspended for encouraging the Sosa McGuire road show which sent message that is ok to juice up— he enabled like the Penn State execs to stand trial for Sandusky …. Bud is no Judge Landis

    • Cubbie Blues

And this is not the 90’s.
