Pre-Gamin’: Brewers v. Cubs (7:05 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, etc.

wrigley field from right bleachersUnless they are relief Bro Hugs, we won’t be seeing any dugout affection tonight. The Trade Deadline has come and passed, and, subject to the waiver trade period, the Cubs can mostly relax now.

Darwin Barney is out again tonight, and I wonder if he’s a little banged up or something.

After 36 straight hours of blogging, I am going to hit the sack shortly. Expect an EBS whenever I wake up, which might be next Tuesday.

  1. Danny Ballgame

Go to sleep Brett. Your job is done here

  2. Dougy D

Didn’t Barney collide with SHark? That probably hurt a bit. DB is just a little guy.

  3. Ed
  4. willis

Jesus this lineup…got to find a bat or two in the offseason. This just looks awful.

    1. Jp3

Well Nate has the 2nd best OPS of any RF… We need a right handed bat to platoon with him in RF, a left handed bat to platoon with… Can we please sign someone that hits both throwing pitchers decent?

      1. Danny Ballgame

You mean a real ballplayer? That would be nice. Maybe even a few of ‘em

      2. willis

After some of Jed’s comments today, I’m kind of taking back that this team is close and they will be competitive next year. I’m bailing on thinking they will buy or trade for much and am close to calling 2014 another losing season.

    2. Jp3

Maybe Barney got traded and nobody noticed?

  5. Eternal Pessimist

With all the talk of teams wanting our players in trade, this line-up suddenly looks unbeatable…I say sign them all and we will be in the WS next year.

    1. nkniacc13

all but 2 are under team control for next year

  6. Griff

Not a fan of Borbon. Not sure what we are hoping to get out of him. Seems like just a warm body we can put out there. I guess defensive replacement or pinch runner. I really wish we could have seen Sweeney play more. To me Sappelt and Borbon are the same players.

  7. William

Why is Lake not playing? The only thing Borbon can do is bunt and steal bases if he ever gets on base. I hope he proves me wrong and goes 4 for five and swipes three bases.

    1. Jp3

      You’re forgetting his scrappy factor.

    2. Hansman1982

      The dude needs a rest?

      1. CubsFaninMS

So far, Borbon appears to be an unexciting, slower version of Tony Campana.

  8. nkniacc13

Still think that the deadline needs to be moved back to Aug 15 or so and the cba is kind hurting the trade deadline

  9. Trueblue

Wow, this lineup is really bad. Now that the trades are completed I project the Cubs will win 70 games or less. This is really too bad as I have watched more Cubs baseball in the last couple of weeks than the last two years combined with Lake and the trade rumors going on it has been must see TV. I believe the rest of the year is going to be very hard to watch as this lineup is boring and unproductive.

    1. Kramden

Well, 70 wins or less should get them a top 5 draft pick again.

All in all, I would consider that alone to be a successful season.

What would be very Cub-like would be if a 3rd baseman was the best player available when their turn came up!

  10. Vulcan

First game Lake has sat out since coming up, I believe.

  11. Terry

I agree we need to get some bats in the off season, I have thought we should go after Mark Trumbo ever since the Angels signed Pujols.

  12. William

We optioned Arrieta back to the minors. I thought he pitched great and deserved another turn.

    1. Die hard

Better now to work on control

    2. Scott

The cubs want to delay his arbitration clock so they retain his services for another year. I expect we will see him full time in September.

  13. shane

Yawn the major league team is soooo boring to watch minors all the way this year !! By the way baez is 0_1 with a strike out he has deff showed improvement by far this year

    1. Danny Ballgame

I hope he continues his trend of adjusting to each new challenge. Kid can smash the ball.

    2. someday...2015?

      Baez HR.

You know scrappy is…CRAPY with an s

Johnny: “It’s running down my leg.”

      1. Danny Ballgame

        Little Johnny. Funny kid

  15. Believe in 2015

Javy Baez goes deep! 28 HR on the year

    1. another JP

Javy says “I’ve got your BABIP right here…”

      1. Rudy

Walk for Baez in the 9th. They are scared!

    2. ssckelley

The home run does not matter, he struck out twice tonight.

      1. Danny Ballgame

I will take a BB, HR, and 2 Ks all day long

        1. ssckelley

          Nooooo….he strikes out to much.

          1. Danny Ballgame

I agree that he strikes out a ton, but he also mashes a ton. I see the glass as half full

  16. William

    Great hustle from Castro!

  17. William

Yay, a double play! Just what we needed. Not!

  18. William

We need to try more hit and runs.

    1. Drew7

Why? This team has shown they can slug. They just suck at getting on base.

      1. William

Because you try different things when you have problems scoring runs.

  19. waittilthisyear

    rizzo’s mom is pretty hot

  20. Dijon

Didn’t realize Ransom is now 0 for 22…. that is unfortunate.

  21. William

There is absolutely no excuse for Castro having single digits in stolen bases. The coaching staff needs to tell him to utilize his speed a lot more.

  22. willis

    BOMB!

  23. William

OMGRizzo! That sweet swing was so beautiful!

  24. Lou Brock

Let’s just play Alcantara at 2B and Lake at 3B in 2014. Could not be worse than what we get from Barney/Valbuena/Ransom etc.

  25. Cubswin

I was pleasantly surprised as everyone else was about Valbuena but he’s been coming back to reality and his .220 BA is not gonna cut it. I assume their waiting until Sept to call Olt up and I can’t wait to see what he can do. At minimum he can play 3rd as well as Valbuena and can definitely hit what Valbuena is too. Should have traded him while value was still there.

    1. Lou Brock

I would love to see Olt work out at third but this years results suggest he has some major problems to overcome. At least Lake gives you more tools to work with like his speed, arm, and bunting ability. Alcantara also offers some speed and power than Barney and Valbuena do not.

      1. Jp3

Yeah Olt can’t hit AAA pitching yet… I hope it’s vision related and correctable otherwise BJax will fix his swing before Olt’s vision gets better

      2. Cubswin

This years numbers don’t negate his numbers from last year. He had vision problems and was just traded. He has some adjusting to do but everyone is acting like Olt is suddenly not a good player… You don’t put up ridiculous numbers like that in triple A if you don’t have what it takes at the next level. Lets see what he can do… We know what Valbuena can do. They seem to like lake in the outfield and Alcantara won’t get the call up this year. Olt has proven he can hit triple A pitching obviously

        1. willis

When exactly did he prove he could hit at the AAA level?

          1. Cubswin

Last year in triple A? .288 BA 28 homeruns and 82 RBi’s. when have those numbers not been great? I would take that any year from any player

            1. X the Cubs Fan

That was AA. But, im on your side.

            2. willis

AA homie. Since he’s arrived in AAA, it’s been pukey.

              1. Cubswin

Whoops read that wrong. Regardless tho I’ve heard Brett and others say the hardest jump (other than the jump to majors) is from single A to double A. He deserves a shot. Some ppl don’t excel until they get in the limelight (Lake). Early on Lake ik but you know what I mean.

  26. jpeck

Pineyro another solid outing. 6 IP 3h 0 ER 0BB 7 k’s thank you Scott Hairston

    1. William

      :-)

  27. William

I had a feeling Castro would bounce back with a vengeance tonight!

  28. Lou Brock

2014 lineup of DeJesus LF, Alcantara 2B, Rizzo 1B, Schierholtz RF, Castillo C, Sweeney CF, Castro SS, Lake 3B with the bench of Barney, Valbuena, Navarro, Gillespie, Szczur.

    1. Kyle

Olt will be at 3rd. Lake will play left. And Barney still starts. Alcantra will get AAA at bats.

      1. Jp3

        And the Olt hype continues…

        1. Kyle

It’s not about the hype, but you don’t make the trade not to give the guy a chance in the bigs. No one knows how good he is going to be, but he deserves a legitimate look.

          1. Jp3

I’m with you that I’d like to get a look at him this year but he can’t hit AAA pitching in a hitter friendly PCL. I think we traded for Edwards and took the “lottery ticket” in Olt. Hopefully an offseason will cure what ales him.

            1. willis

He keeps whiffing away at AAA he won’t be starting next year in Wrigley. Hell dude is almost 25, right? And getting abused by AAA pitching. He’s not your answer at 3rd.

              1. Kyle

Speaking of which, 0-for-1 with a K already tonight at Iowa.

I thought his eyes were fixed and all was better, right?

                1. willis

Oh yeah, everything was better. At least that’s what they and we were sold I suppose.

Those thinking he’ll amount to much are in line for disappointment I’m afraid.

                  1. Kyle

Someone needs to tell the PCL pitchers that he was a top-50 prospect in BA’s midseason rankings. Maybe they’ll show him some respect then.

                2. Jp3

Yeah, he was the definition of a throw in. I will say I hope the offseason gives him a chance to get his head/eyes fixed or we just inherited another Brett jax. That would be awesome to see both playing in Iowa next year and get 400 Ks between them

                  1. willis

Dude, BJax is a contact machine compared to Olt. I remember when BJax was called up to AAA two years ago, and he did ok. Then last year there he had issues but still did decent. Olt on the other hand can’t hit AAA at all.

But you’re right, between the two of them it’s a strikeout record on tap.

                    1. Danny Ballgame

Olt must still have eye problems from the heater of his head. If he can return to anything close to what he was he was, we have our starting 3B next year. I just hope that he can start making contact again. Dude was going to be a solid player(Poor man’s Scott Rolan)

                    2. Ken

We did medical on him-please tell us they used an opthamologist also. Report from Minor Weekly is not good.

                    3. Cubswin

Bjax didn’t put up numbers Olt did. Bjax can’t even hit double A pitching why is this even a conversation? Apparently a down year means you’ll never play well again. Some guys have never struggled before and are learning to adjust. Brett Jackson is done just accept it

      2. Lou Brock

Cubs cannot afford to have Barney play another year at 2B with the numbers he has put up and the lack of production at that position. Castro never played a game at AAA and had success in the Majors, why not give Alcantara a taste to see if he can handle it. He is probably seeing better pitching at AA than he would at AAA anyway.

        1. Pat

No argument there. But overall I think they can somehow put together a better offensive lineup than that. If that’s the opening day lineup I’m not real optimistic about their chances, even as a surprise team.

          1. Cubes

there is zero chance that the cubs biggest offensive offseason move is resigning Ryan Sweeney.

        2. Danny Ballgame

I have no problem with ‘Mendy making a jump to the bigs. I would like to see if Watkins has any value at the next level first. With the way that the front office likes it done, both will move up and have a chance.

          1. Kyle

Watkins is putting up a .722 OPS in the PCL. Until he turns that around, I think it’s safe to assume that he doesn’t have much value in the majors.

            1. Danny Ballgame

Has to be worth more than Barney

      3. Kyle

Olt needs to stop being horriawfuble at AAA before he even thinks about seeing the inside of an MLB clubhouse again.

        1. Danny Ballgame

I just horrafabull’ed my beer all over the hotel room floor. Quality wordage kyle

    2. Pat

I hope not. Whatever offensive gains you get from replacing Barney with Alcantara are almost certainly wiped out by essentially replacing Soriano with Sweeney. At best that is equal offensive output to this year.

      1. nkniacc13

right now lake is replacing Soriano. Sweeney is a Fa after year so cubs would have to resign him

        1. Kyle

That’s not really much different. Lake replaces Hairston as a reserve OF, at best.

  29. Patrick G

I think Barney stays because if everyone else in the lineup can produce more next year in the lineup, his defense is worth his crappy bat. And if anything, I think Watkins gets a call before Alcantara so he can see AAA pitching

    1. Jp3

Well, the lineup can’t produce any worse than this year if that’s what you mean.
